State's going after him for being law abiding and cooperating with police.

Yes, it is.

ETA: You are Black and are you going to give your young relative just learning to drive the "talk" that other Black parents do?

It is crazy to see the differences in culture and attitudes between actual african americans and black americans. And the fact he is questioning it pretty hard is terrible

Never could understand that. Sun glare off windscreen and windows by day and darkness at night prevents officers from getting looks at driver ethnicity in general. Unless one has blacked out windows that violate traffic code.

Scheicher passes for cause we have juror 8.

Next juror will be off audio fairly quickly and expected to be resolved quickly as well.

Cahill lets her go for cause. That was Juror #83 taken out of order because of the short time until recess.

We're back.

Group instructions. These were the prospective jurors originally called to begin at 1:30.

Juror #85 will be today, the remaining jurors are released to come back tomorrow morning. Running out of time.

Juror #85 is female. Sounds youngish.

Heard about the record breaking settlement but not much else about it. And it does not affect her ability to be impartial in a criminal case and civil cases are settled for a variety of reasons.

Nelson is up.

Her work issue has been resolved. Has a small child but if sequestered, her husband can care for the child.

Only saw the video on the news. Saw it five six times because it was on the news so much.

Somewhat negative opinion of Chauvin but doesn't know what happened before or after the video.

Can she put that aside? Yes. Can ground zero Chauvin is presumed innocent? Yes.

She is not saying that Chauvin caused Floyd's death because she doesn't know the COD.

Sounds pretty reasonable thus far.

Nelson passes for cause.

State's up.

Asks her about her job described as organizational management consultant. How to navigate an organization through a changing environment, including tech and efficiency changes. And helps with changing corporate culture as well.

ETA: Sounds pretty good.

I'd wager she winds up as foreman. Her skill set is very conducive.

She sees addiction as a disease and doesn't hold that against people.

She has a strong belief in the police and supports them in general.

How did they know she once nearly walked out of a store with something she hadn't paid for unless she put that on her questionnaire?

This is the same line of questioning as the "driving while Black" line with the other guy.

State gonna strike her?

Wow, guess not. I think if I was the prosecutor I would have burned a strike.

A grand-uncle of mine shot and killed his son-in-law in a jewelry store in Dallas iin front of plenty of witnesses in the 1940s. He was a former FBI agent and a former Chief of Police of Dallas.

His trial in Dallas resulted in a hung jury. So they retried him in a nearby town (I think it was Kaufman). The second trial ended in a verdict of not guilty.
Just curious - How'd he get off with all the witnesses present?
Different times. The son-in-law didn't get a divorce before marrying his daughter. I guess the jury took a dim view of that.
Yeah, the old "so-what-if-he-did-it-the guy-deserved-it" rationale.
In West Texas, the defense is known as "He needed killing." Credit to Mark Twain, The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson. In the county where I grew up, they went decades between murder convictions, and more often than not, the only defense was that the victim was such a lowlife that "He needed killing."

No idea. They don't have any cause to challenge her so would need.

Passed for cause. She is on the jury.

So in the morning they were down two jurors and now at the end of the day regained two jurors.

3 more strikes given to defense, 1 to state

YAY! Defense gets three more peremptory and state gets one additional.

Stata and defense agree to strike 108, 112, 122, 124 and 125.

Agree. The two who quit this morning were pretty shaky on the fair and impartial scale. But they were also from the first few days of selection when Cahill was being more of a stickler that they had to flat out say they couldn't be impartial.

ETA: I'm still concerned about the eager beaver SJW girl, though. AWESOME.

Assuming Ms. AWESOME is prosecution all the way, I don't think she'll be an "influencer".

Ha. Not to derail, but growing up in Eastland County we had a local villain who got crossways with another, older shady businessman. The villain confronted him at his home and the businessman put two .357 slugs in him.
I think the grand jury took about fifteen minutes to no-bill after listening to officers investigating the incident.

If anything she may be the source for a hung jury if it comes to that.

I'd wager Cahill feels a little bit better than he did this morning during the voir dire zoom calls about the 27 million settlement. He was staring into the abyss of complete disaster had he lost nearly half of the already seated jury they had a repeat of yesterday where no one was seated.

Apropos of nothing but I noted that Nelson when addressing that last panel during the group instruction, he looked over and confirmed they were all females by saying, "Good afternoon, cranes his neck to see, ladies."

So the first three tomorrow should be women.

Blacks from other countries hate american blacks for being lazy and entitled. Those black immigrants appreciate the opportunity the USA affords as opposed to real oppression...which isn't getting a free handout. They are here to work and contribute.

Point being the state's ringer* attorney was stereotyping the guy because he was Black. I thought that was not only a strange (and clueless) thing to do but I can't for the life of me understand what he hoped to elicit from the juror by asking that.

*This thread is very long and people may not know that the few, if any actual state employed attorneys are prosecuting this case. Mostly from private practice offering their services allegedly pro bono. IOW, Chauvin is being prosecuted by lawyers in private practice. How the hell is that allowed?

Gotcha, was taking the comment out of context of the entire thread. I've spent time with quite a few Caribbean folks who legally entered the country for opportunity. They are disgusted at the attitude of the locals.
