Luckily one of the few good things Houston has done in recent years is decriminalize weed. It's not even on cops radar down here. Unless you are talking about major trafficking level amounts. Or smoking while driving.

Tell that to Mr. Tuttle and Ms. Nicholas...
Were cops doing the bust under pretenses of them having minor amounts of weed in the house? Not sure I follow. Are you arguing that they would have done a no-knock raid on these people if it was assumed they had less than 4 ounces of pot (which is now basically legal to possess in Houston)? Even in places where weed has not been decriminalized, no police force would conduct a no-knock raid for tiny recreational amounts, which is what these two apparently had...along with some coke.

Happened to me at A&M with campus police. They pulled me over and said they smelled weed so they could search my vehicle even though I didn't smoke weed, and of course they found nothing, just made me late for an intramural football game, and were able to strip away my constitutional rights just by claiming to smell weed.
Happened to me twice that I can think of, off-hand. One was a bicycle cop who said he smelled it as I drove by with my windows up. Rode up and hand-cuffed me immediately. Found nothing; had to let me go.

Another time, I had just gotten home from work. Roommate, a friend, and I went out to the balcony; someone was smoking a cigarette. Cops showed up due to a noise complaint (another one of their favorite reasons to violate your rights) and walked right into the apartment as soon as my roommate opened the door. Hadn't been home for 5 minutes and weren't making noise. So, even IF the complaint was legit (which it couldn't have been), there's no way they had time to respond that quickly. There were THREE of us in the apartment, not making noise, and not smoking weed. When they couldn't bust us for anything else, they did us the "favor" of leaving a citation for noise violation.

Wait, you think its ok that cops harrass people for traffic bull**** because they might catch drugs that way!!!???

THAT IS NOT HOW FREE COUNTRIES WORK

How about - cops dont harass people for bull****, and actually do cop work and find and arrest real criminals instead.

Thats kind of the concept.
This is actually how they catch A LOT of criminals. It is totally legal for them to get someone for failure to come to a complete stop, expired registration etc. and from there to see what comes up when they run the plates etc. At every stop light, cops are running plates for expired inspection/registration/warrants etc. as well. i realize this HAPPENS. the problem is that this is all complete and total orwellian bull****, and none of it is valid. It goes against EVERYTHING this country stands for. No amount of criminals "CAUGHT" in the 1984 orwellian socialist bull**** regimes' tactics is worth throwing out the whole concept of a free country.

guarantee both you and I have had it happen to us numerous times and never even knew it. Very effective way of patrolling the streets and fighting crime.

What is NOT ok is stopping people with no PC...or violating their basic freedoms once you have them stopped.

Also police are naturally going to keep a closer eye on the driving of a dude in a dropped Cutlass in a high crime neighborhood than a mini-van driving mother in the suburbs. Why wouldn't they?

My experience was similar but very different.

A CSPD officer lived in our complex. He liked to party with us. I got to see firsthand though the way they operated without ever getting hassled.

Nothing too shocking except maybe he used to pull over cute girls to talk to them. Dated a few as well.

Roommate's brother was a CSPD cop. He "stole" some fireworks from a student that was pulled over and had them in his front seat. Didn't give him a ticket, but did give us the fireworks later. Pretty crappy thing to do in reality. And we proceeded to shoot them off inside city limits.

You are a proponent of killing cops for checking for expired inspection/registration at stoplights? This is how they catch a ton of criminals and stolen cars. If the feds were rolling around doing this, I'd agree, but local cops??? How is that "socialist" or "authoritarian"?

I am definitely open to arguments. I've just kind of accepted it as "it is what it is" ever since learning about this about a decade ago.

Feds legislators politicians bureaucrats police leadership contractors that sold them this **** and everyone that paid or received bribes to implement deserve death. The run of the mill officer should have refused and resigned and honestly deserve bad things but I guess you can't demand that they be martyrs or heroes, even though they tend to claim that honor.

Culture is the problem. Cops are above the law and they know it. Cops that have the audacity to "rat" on other cops are shunned, ostracized and are usually run out of the profession entirely.

"Policing" is not what it used to be or should be. It has become a money grab. Walking a beat doesn't make money. Investigating crimes doesn't make money. Writing craploads of tickets makes money.

And the annoying part of it is that these cops break every traffic law they write tickets for CONSTANTLY. Yet they will never get a ticket for it because they are in the club. Is it any less dangerous when a cop speeds, runs a red light, changes lanes without using a signal? I'm not talking about when they've got their lights on.

Campus police pulled me over one night driving through campus, had way too much to drink. They asked me to get out and where I was going, I said home less than 3 blocks from here..they told me to get In the car and go straight home ... got In the car and fumbled my keys between the seat... finally got them and drove off... they were pretty nice to me.

2nd time they pull me (3 drunk buddies in the truck) over on Welborne.. I open my door and beer cans fall out .. cop is pissed, ask me how much I had to drink and what I yelled at him at the light? I said we were yelling at the dude with the chick telling him to show her his private's ... the cop couldn't help but laughing and says get in the car and go straight home... he let me go !

The good old days ... wouldn't work, that way today I'm afraid

Saying people should be killed for checking for expired license and registration is bit...um...extreme. And this is coming from someone who has probably been flagged by the NSA.

Chief Art actually announced this yesterday I believe. This is a BIG mistake.

There actually is a legitimate place and time for no-knock warrants. Say you're dealing with a cartel, AB or Mexican Mafia dope/weapons house and don't want your officers to be sitting ducks.

Like a true slimy politician Art is more concerned with taking the easy route and "saving face" than trying to actually fix things.

It's an exaggeration almost to the point of a lie. New policy is that all no-knock warrants must be blessed by the chief or a designee. Basically there will be an accountability structure, so if you **** up, it's either the chief's *** or, more likely, a designee that isn't going to rubber stamp your warrant because he now bears responsibility for your work.

Which should have been going on in the first place.

A no-knock should be an exceptional situation, requiring exceptional procedures and approvals.

If this is a wrong address, everyone who went into that house and anyone who singed off on the raid need to be fired and prosecuted for premeditated murder. THERE IS NO ****ING EXCUSE FOR POLICE GETTING THE WRONG ADDRESS WHEN THEY HAVE WEEKS TO INVESTIGATE. End of story. You want a gun and authority? Accept the responsibility when an "accident" is a direct result of your negligence and dereliction.
We got a bingo today.

So true. Unrelated, but check out this vid that I stole from the Outdoors board. A fraction of a second more hesitation or a slight departure from his training and this officer is likely dead or seriously injured. Every lib (esp in black community) needs to watch this to see why cops are so "on edge" when suspects have hands in pockets or are reaching for them. It's borderline miraculous that he was able to keep from shooting the idiot who rushes up to him at the end. Major props to this officer.

Very quick thinking on that officer's behalf. If he wasn't, he would be dead. Good for him.

I'm very pro police, but police department large and small better get off of their arrogant asses and quit thinking that THEY are the only ones that want to get home alive at the end of the day.

Pro tip. We ALL want to get home power trippers!

Take off the ****ing black uniforms, put on some BLUE like cops used to wear, and be a little humble now and then.

You don't need black, special ops uniforms to carry out your duties. Do some POLICING for once and stop acting like you're the military. Hint. You're NOT.
