I do think she probably would (or should) have known more even on an academic level, but how much experience in battle does she really have? Dragons haven't fought one another in a while. Any fighting they've done has been against ground forces with the biggest threat likely being ballistas (and archers for the rider). I doubt Rhaenys specifically would have done much fighting either as a royal and a woman.

Yep. Technically the only dragon-on-dragon battle took place 90 years ago in universe and not with the same dragons involved here. Maegor the Cruel killed one of his nephews while riding Balerion.

Aemond did get a little practice at the end of last season when he did the chomp on Lucious.

Right, but that was the first. I think they did a great job of him looking stunned by the result, because he thought the dragon would deliver his intent, not take the lead.

It's was actually the young inexperienced dragon, not controlling him that did the fire which ended up getting Lucious killed in the end.

And Rhaenys could have left the battle.

And Aegon should not have even been there but he's stupid.

So one could say they all did things that hurt them more than Aemond's fault.

Or heck it all stems them being *******s. So actually the black queens fault.

If memory serves, the only battle in the first 2 seasons is the Battle of the Blackwater at the end of season 2. Other battles happen off screen.

There were more characters involved, but this is a much more focused story/conflict than GoT. I do wish we had a bit more of people like Larys, but they are likely going to keep introducing new characters as things scale up to full on war.

Did we watch different shows? GoT S1 had a much smaller scale than the rest of the series. Much smaller sets, barely any shots of King's Landing (they weren't in Croatia yet), no onscreen battles...

Don't get me wrong, it was a great season, but large scale it wasn't. Everything about HOTD S1 was bigger and better in terms of sets, costumes, and scale.

GOT is 8 seasons long. Dragons is only 1 1/2 so far

To me, what this show is missing is Tyrion and Arya. Both offered a lot of humor that we haven't seen in HotD so far. Additionally, both travelled a lot and that allowed us to see much more about how the common people were dealing with things. Arya's story, specifically, rarely dealt with the Nobles. Their travels showed us much more of Westeros instead of just sticking to King's Landing and Winterfell.

GRRM talked about how the biggest regret he had about S1 was how they didn't have money to show what an actual royal hunting party should look like, and they were finally able to do it right in HOTD.

This a troll post?

House of the Dragon S1 literally one-upped S1 of GoT in every sense in terms of scope. The jousting in HotD is grander. The royal hunt in HotD is grander. The battles in HotD are grander - very literally because GoT's first season had only one offscreen battle. The dragons are grander in HotD. The sets are far better. List goes on.

I wouldn't consider this a spoiler, but my comments below are discussing the book, so I'll add spoiler tags just in case some don't want to read it:

In terms of scale, I suspect this is due to having much less book material to draw from. I'm currently reading "Fire and Blood". The events of the first season of HOTD don't begin until about halfway through the book. I'm roughly 200 pages past that now and I'm at a point where I think Season 2 will likely end.

If I'm right, that means that 2 entire seasons were created based off roughly 200 pages of text. I have not read the novellas, though, so there could be much more to draw from in those. In comparison, S1 of GOT lined up with the entire book, which was about 700 pages.

"Fire and Blood" is written as a history book and, honestly, I've found it to be pretty boring. The show is doing a really good job of adding "color" to a historical text and I'm really enjoying it. WIth GOT, the books were much better than the show. It is the opposite with HOTD so far, IMO.

Was on vacation last week, so finally watched Ep 4 this morning. I am surprised at anyone thinking Aemond planned to have Aegon come to that battle. It should have been obvious when he yelled "idiot" that he was both surprised and pissed.

I understand the complaint about Rhaenys flying so low and losing her vantage, but I think she had to go down to see what happened to Vhaghar b/c of the smoke and dust. Once she realized he wasn't down there she looks up and around, and probably should have started to climb, but maybe it happened too fast? The real issue, for me, is that it appeared Vhaghar come over the cliff at the perfect moment, but he also should have been blind to where Meleys was flying. So, chalk that one up to happening for the sake of drama.

When Cole finally got to where Aegon fell, I was expecting to see him lying on top of the dragon with it's arms holding him in place, as if to imply it used it's own body to protect. I have no idea if he's dead or not, but I assumed he would still be.

I agree that I'm not a huge fan of Daemon just sitting around and letting himself be drugged. I always thought he was a little smarter than that, even though he has always been temperamental and rash.

One potential thing that could be interesting, if they go this way, is have Alicent's brother take credit for that victory and have him throw more shade at Cole for nearly screwing them all up. Doubt it, since Aemond would probably just kill him.

I kind of want to see more from Rhaenyra's son, he has the youthful need to act like Aegon, but he's much more able to listen to advice.

Pretty good episode. Glad I don't have to wait long between episodes this week.
