That Stark theme right at the top just hit different.

Great episode setting the board. But man, I did not expect to see a toddler die.

Truth be told I was relieved they didn't actually kill Aemond this early (I think we all really want that 1v1 Daemon vs Aemond showdown they're clearly building toward), but it kind of stretched believability a little that Daemon didn't even think to describe Aemond enough that they wouldn't think he meant a literal child. He did mention the fake eye, right?

So that part is my only complaint.

I like seeing the hypocrisy of Alicent and Criston in their affair, who both chided Rhaenyra for doing the exact same thing.

I guess soiling his white cloak is no longer an issue for him.

They knew it was not him. Just thought they at least needed to kill a boy.

Good writing. Both sides have lost a son now. So it's on.

Oh and the schisms between the individual sides are sure to be a major story point for the whole season. I'm thinking someone will eventually betray their side before all is said and done.

I think Daemon inadvertently murdering an innocent child is gonna cause a little tension...

Did they though? They seemed to think it was that head they needed. Unless Daemon specified any male Targaryen head would do.

Yeah he specifically stated one eye with his description

Daemon told them he has one eye and was a great sword. Pretty sure the toddler did not meet those specifics.

I guess when they cut away when they asked "And if we can't find him?", we're meant to interpret that Daemon said to kill the kid.

So yeah, definitely gonna cause tension in Team Black...

They asked Daemon what they should do if they can't find Aemond though. I'm guessing he told them off screen that maybe another son would be better than nothing.

The discussion in the house watch party was immediately about feeling upset over the kicking of the dog. Not killing the innocent child. Priorities.

I have zero doubt that moment probably caused the most immediate/visible anger in the bar that films reactions.

So was Larys making a move for himself as Hand?

Honestly the way this played out in the show makes a lot more sense than what happened in the book. No spoilers but IYKYK

Before, I was on team black. With that ending I might have flipped faster than your mom on dollar margarita night.

Exactly correct, provoke them to get things moving.

"A son for a son, he said!"

Pretty solid writing.

Probably. Who else would he push for?

Kind of a boring season opener. Felt like a 50 minute preview to get to blood and cheese.

Well, Maegor the whatever king built the red keep with all these secret passages and then killed the guy who built it, so only he would know where they all were. Obviously Cheese knew a bunch of them, but still seemed off to go strolling through the throne room while the king plays grab ass with his drinking buddies and not encounter anyone.

My wife and I had the exact same reaction. Good summation. Boring opener but we know it's going to go nuke soon.

It's exactly what an episode 1 has always been for any GoT season before this. What did you expect? We knew the war wasn't starting right away.

did season one really come out two years ago?!

seems like it was 9 months ago.

No issues with that episode whatsoever, however the tapestry opening is kinda lame. Hoping it grows on me.

It's been a few years since I've read the Fire and Blood novellas (Rogue Price, Princess and the Queen) so I had forgotten most of the set up elements.

It was cool to see Cheese walking through the Red Keep at times while the main action was on other characters.

The characters in the first season took awhile to grow on me due to the timejumps, but everyone feels right for season 2.

I think the biggest question I have is how far will this storyline go? Will it end with the conclusion of the Targaryen civil war, or will it really try to squeeze every bit out and timejump with new cast members all the way to Robert's Rebellion? Reddit and the internet don't seem to agree on anything past three seasons.

They did have an establishing shot of the ratters moving around freely earlier in the show.

I liked the episode generally, but agree that B&C should have been better. The full version in the books was way cooler and could have been done in roughly the same amount of screentime.

I like this version. Rhaenyra commands equivalent retribution for Luke but Daemon leaves the command open just enough to either achieve what Rhaenyra wanted or get the open war he wanted. It's also ironic because now Aegon II is in the same position as Viserys in the opening of the show: a legitimate female heir and a male brother who may be a little too cruel and warlike for the throne.

This franchise really knows how to celebrate Father's Day.

First it was Tyrion murdering his father, now it's a father losing his toddler in horrifying fashion...

Yeah it was a set up episode, did its job. Wasn't spectacular but the stage is now set. Maybe I'm just spoiled by some of the better episodes, but it did feel like it lacked a bit of intensity through most of it (til the end scene) comparatively. Hopefully that comes back.
Its funny, with british accent shows I usually leave the subtitles on, in the last scene it said 'sound of flesh and bone being sawed". So that was fun.

Agree with everyone that it was good but not great, but episode ones are never really the best ones in terms of action. I think maybe our desire for that was because of how season one ended. You might expect that this one immediately takes off from there, but Rhaenyra had to go through her grieving stage, and the greens were still hoping to avoid an all out war. I think we are firmly in bat **** crazy territory by the end of episode one though. Both sides are now fully committed to killing each other.

Wondering this too. Does it basically reach the conclusion of the dance and end pretty quickly or is it slightly extended into the future? They have mentioned possibly doing 4 seasons so I am interested to see if their plans changed to scale back to only three.

Wife felt the same way. She was more upset about the dog. I'm like really, dude just killed a baby. Her reaction was Meh.
