Saw it last night and thought is was good, but I don't get where all the masterpiece talk is coming from. The action was top notch no doubt, but I like the Fast and the Furious movies more. There were just so many "wtf, did Marilyn Manson just create this" moments. It's not bad, but with the reviews, my expectations were definitely not met.

The action was over the top in a good way I thought. I definitely wasn't bored at any point. Visuals were pretty awesome at several points, especially the storm. It wasn't a perfect movie in any sense, but I found it enjoyable. I think some of the issues is a lot of it is not explained a lot, which makes sense in a movie where dialogue isn't the main part of the movie.

Stuff like the guitar guy I think were pretty cool and just went to show how over the top crazy it all really was. I mean if fuel is so previous you are not going to waste it on a car the carries speakers and drums. You aren't going to use flame throwers, etc... but on the other hand, they were based off old Viking traditions and the guitarist was their version of like war drums going into battle. It made everyone crazy and rev'd up to kill themselves if need be.

Would I have liked a little more back story.....yes.....could I figure it out without it....yes Will I see a sequel if it comes out....yes!

The movie should be called something like "Furiosa Returns" or Furiosa's Revenge". This is her story, not Max's. I think the problem with Tom Hardy's Max may not be him, it could be in the writing, directing and editing. Furiosa is obviously the main character and the inspiration for this movie, and Max seems to be an afterthought.

As in, "I have another cool story idea for the wasteland, how can I include Max"

Its still an incredible movie, but the Tom Hardy character could be named anything.
I agree with this. Saw it yesterday and it is action-packed and entertaining, but hardly a great movie. But, not horrible. It was about what I expected so I can say I enjoyed it. Over the top scenes, but cool.

The guitar and drum car was amusing, odd, but amusing.
Tom Hardy is a very sexy dude. Not classically handsome but rugged and awesome. I've enjoyed him in every movie he's been in.
Charlize did a good job, definitely was her movie, though.
Interesting that Elvis' granddaughter was the red head.

If they do a sequel, I'd like to see more Max.

I liked it. It was crazy as hell. Give me this kind of popcorn movie over fast and furious crap any day.

I don't really care either way, but I thought this was one movie where the female protagonists weren't secondary to the male. A girl-power kind of movie that doesn't make you want to gag and roll your eyes.

I agree with Snowdog about Tom Hardy. I can't really think of a movie or role he has been in that I didn't like, but it's because he gets great roles and I like him and his acting style. That said, he is one of those actors that really has pretty much the same dynamic range, characterizations and emotions throughout his roles -- not a knock but some fanboys make him out to be more than that.

Agree. And Tom says this about himself:

quote:
People didn't sit up and take any notice of me until I started putting on weight, kicking people, and being aggressive."He continued, "The trouble with Hollywood is that they want you to be something, then they think you're who they wanted you to be. I'm not a fighter. I'm a petite little bourgeois boy from London."

quote:
The hunky star hasn't been shy about his public persona, and he explained that the media's image isn't that far from the truth."I have a reputation for being difficult. And I am. I am, actually," he said."But I'm not unreasonable. It used to be that if somebody hurt me I'd lash out a bit, in order to get them to stop. It ultimately comes from fear."

Good movie, just not 99% good.

Sums up my feelings as succinctly as possible. Really liked it, didn't love it. I don't have a single complaint, but I also wasn't as blown away by it as a lot of these fanboy critics. All in all, though, this summer is off to a great start. I've really enjoyed my time in theater for both Age of Ultron and this, and that's about all I can ask for. Hopefully the trend continues...

the guitar player was one of the lamest things ive seen in a movie and they gave it soooo much screen time

I thought the guitar player looked dumb as hell in the commercials, but I ended up loving him in the movie itself. Miller's explanation for him is actually pretty cool, and makes a lot of sense in terms of how old school / more formal battles you used to go down...

quote:
With his explosive movements and fire-breathing electric guitar, there's no doubt The Coma-Doof Warrior is one of the more fascinating characters in Mad Max: Fury Road. Miller told us his was one comic they never got to tackle, and teased the story he'd like to tell.

"One character who didn't get his own comic was the Doof Warrior," he revealed. "I want to tell a story about him in a comic if there's an opportunity. For me, it was all about how someone who is blind survives in this place. How does someone weak survive the apocalypse? He survived because he was blind because he lived deep in an unlit mine, where it was an advantage to be blind."

So how did he wind up playing the electric guitar during battle?

Miller explained: "So, deep in the mine, he would sit there and eat rodents and get the water from the sea bed -- and he would also play his guitar where no one could hear it. One day Immortan Joe came past, and someone heard the music. Then he was called upon when [Joe] needed a bugler or the bagpipe -- someone who helps call everyone to war."

Do more Mad Max sequels exist?

Yes, two sequels exist. There's one that has a finished screenplay and is centered more on Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa.

There's also another sequel that has an outline. Are they being turned into movies?

Not yet, but if Mad Max: Fury Road is successful, anything is possible.

If they don't become movies, will we see them in some other form?

Because he released three prequel comics to compliment Mad Max: Fury Road, chances are we could see future Mad Max stories in that format as well. There's also early talks of a Mad Max live show in the works, too.

When we asked Miller about it, he was sure we'd see more, but didn't know in what form just yet. "I've never thought about it honestly if I get the appetite again, I'd love to see those movies made," he says. "But yeah, we can always see them in some way."

Yeah, unfortunately, Pitch Perfect 2 was always going to beat this at this box office. Studios have been anticipating that for weeks. That said, $45M+ or so for an R-rated action movie would be considered a pretty good opening weekend. Plus, it'll likely have legs going into the next couple of weeks. Tomorrowland (5/22) and San Andreas (5/29) should have similar openings and won't be huge detractors from Mad Max's box office.

Just got back, I enjoyed it for sure but 98% definitely seems high. Also Max didn't have enough personality to be referred to as mad in my opinion. Gibson definitely embodied the role. Hardy could have played it different, he had personality in Bronson, not sure why there wasn't more here.

Good movie, definitely not 99% good though. It was like an art film meets an action film which is why I think the critics were so high on it. They wanted to prove they can like an action film.

Man I don't know, 99% feels about right to me. I'll give it a 96% for the fire-axe-guitar playing maniac alone. So then surely 6 Australian supermodels are worth 0.5% each!

I am looking forward to it, I thought the first one was hilarious, but I enjoy "girly" comedies like that and mean girls. Although bridesmaid was a little over the top for me.

WTF did I just watch? That was insane, and I don't know if it was insane in a good or bad way.

I thought the action shots were great, and the movie was intense. But I didn't even know what the story line was for the first hour or so, and there was never much story at all. All action and intensity with absolutely no story line just doesn't make a great movie for me. Definitely not a 98% movie.

All in all, it was what I expected, but I was hoping for much more after all the great reviews. Great action and great job "building the world," but not a great movie.

I honestly don't understand this sentiment. The beauty of the movie is that the storyline is so incredibly obvious, straightforward, and easy to follow. There are multiple articles out there discussing this very fact; that in the wake of so many overly complicated plots - like Age of Ultron and Star Trek Into Darkness, to name a few - Fury Road stands out for its clear goals and stark simplicity, making for a much more visceral experience...

- It's the future. The world has obviously gone to hell after some kind of apocalyptic event. Doesn't matter what.

- A ruthless cult leader (named Immortan Joe) sends a group on what is basically a glorified gas run, celebrated with much pomp and circumstance. Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) is the leader and point-woman of this gas run, as clearly stated by Joe as he addresses the masses.

- Furiosa, however, soon veers from the mission and it's revealed that she has smuggled Joe's harem of wives out, with plans to take them to "the green place," a place obviously/hopefully much better than where they came from (the details of which are ultimately irrelevant). All that matters is that the girls were being treated horribly ("We are not things!") and Furiosa is attempting to take them some place better.

- Joe immediately discovers his hiram is missing and rallies a large group to get them back.

- A rogue named Max was captured by Joe's thugs/devotees and now finds himself a part of the group going after the harem. Joe has an army of "War Boys," many of whom are suffering from some kind of tumors/deformities (likely from some kind of apocalyptic radiation, but it really doesn't matter). Max's blood is obviously being drained to treat one War Boy in particular (named Nux), who likely doesn't have much longer to live (again, all clearly stated).

- Eventually, Max gets free in a giant sandstorm and, after an initial scuffle, reluctantly joins with Furiosa and her crew / agrees to help them get to "the green place."

- Max, Furiosa & co eventually run into Furiosa's old clan, discover that "the green place" is no more, and so they come up with a dangerous plan to journey back through where they came, seal off the canyon they already ventured through, and take the now-unguarded "Citadel" (the cult headquarters from whence they came).

Seriously, the plot is literally: "With bad guys in pursuit, heroes attempt to drive from point A to B, discover B no longer exists, drive back to a now-unguarded point A." How is that "no storyline" or complicated in any way?

I honestly had no plans to see this again, but typing that up just got excited all over again. The more time has passed in the 24 hours since I saw it, the more it's sticking with me, and the more I want to revisit it. As much as I liked it initially, I never would have thought that walking out of the theater last night. It's slowly but surely growing on me more and more, from "enjoyed it" to "loved it."

I loved it and the wife thought it was a lot of fun too. Now I want to see a "behind the scenes" feature showing just how he filmed some of that stuff. Was pure insanity (in a good way) start to finish. Best action movie I have seen in a long time. Might start seeing other directors bite off this filming style in some way with other action movies.

The big fat sleaze in the suit with ultra swollen water logged ankles and nipple clamps was really creepy. Loved watching him and Immortan Joe die.

Found myself laughing a ton in this movie...but most of it was out of sheer amazement during various action sequences/stunts.

Saw it last night with the Wife after making a deal with her that if I go see Far from the Madding Crowd (I actually enjoyed it) with her, then she's got to go see Fury Road with me. My wife generally is bored by these types of movies but she ended up loving Fury Road. It gets a 9/10 from me. I thought it was great and i will see it again in the theater. Primal, visceral, intense, wildly entertaining. No gratuitous, over the top sex or overly complicated plot. It makes it clear from the beginning that its all about basic survival in a harsh and brutal world. The action was non-stop and very well done, the visuals were amazing, and the chase scenes and fights were superb and seemed as realistic as you'd expect in a post-apocalyptic movie. What I mean is that there was nothing in the movie that made me roll my eyes over the ridiculousness of it. I thought the acting was very well done as well. Everyone played their part very well. The hard rock music was pretty badass. In other movies, I'd think it was cheesy but it fit here and fit well. Best movie i've seen in many, many years and I do plan on seeing again and getting it on DVD.

I think you misunderstand me. I don't mind sex in movies but in this day and age it seems like it's always over the top. Just my opinion.

The violence in this movie was, as you allude very graphic and over the top, but it still fit with the actual plot of the movie. You would expect there to be wanton and brutal violence in a movie about a post-apocalyptic world where everyone is trying to survive and has been reduced to their basic needs of food, water, shelter, etc. I expected it and it fit into what this movie was about. All I was saying is that it was nice not to see any crazy sex stuff going on as we're constantly bombarded with it elsewhere.
