I would say watch the old ones first. If you don't you won't be completely lost watching the new one, but watching the old ones will give you a good understanding of the apocalyptic world it all takes place in, as well as who Max is. So after typing all of that, yes, definitely watch the old ones first or you won't appreciate Fury Road nearly as much (I would guess).

I actually just read that this is a prequel. Takes place BEFORE the other three movies, and that Hardy IS Mel Gibson's character. Previously, I thought this was basically just some kind of soft reboot or something.

I was going to ask where it fell into the timeline, it's the same director and he mentioned it was part of the same story so I didn't think it was a reboot.

Watched the preview footage last night and holy crap...I'm not entirely what's going on but it looks insane.

Aside from the Bane joke having already been made, the early parts of this film could be kind of terrifying/gruesome.

i don't recall, did Max have a crappy history before the first one? i just remember him being a grumpy cop - then SHTF...

also, does the original get credit for introducing the world to the SAW dilema or did someone else come up with that first?

It can't be before the first one, that would make no sense whatsoever.

and whomever hasn't seen the first 3, do yourself a favor and skip thunderdome as if it never existed, it's a pile of crapola.

It was my understanding that this movie was supposed to take place between Mad Max and The Road Warrior, but I may be wrong.

And if you haven't seen the trilogy, I think you can skip the first one and just dive into The Road Warrior. Max doesn't have a lot of dialogue and his backstory on why he's 'mad' isn't really necessary to enjoy the film.

And The Road Warrior is in my Top 5 of action movies. It's been on the pay channels lately and so I watched it for about the hundreth time. It's still brilliant.

Yeah, GOTTA be between Road Warrior and Mad Max. Footage so far just doesn't fit if this supposedly takes place BEFORE Mad Max (i.e before Max quit being a cop and before the world went to complete ****).

And, if you're going yo watch the first two, might as well watch Thunderdome just to complete the story arc.

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!

That looks even better than I was hoping for.

ANd yes, George Miller has stated that this story takes place after Mad Max, but prior to Road Warrior. The big giveaway is the modification to the Police Interceptor that he is driving. The larger tank in the back was done after the Mad Max events, when he drove off into the Outback - in order to allow for a larger capacity of gasoline, when available, than the standard tank. (Sorry, huge fan of the original Mad Max trilogy and story, so I have been following this production closely)

I remembered years ago Miller announcing plans to start shooting two new Mad Max films:
Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Furiosa

In doing a little digging, I found initially 2 movies were suppose to be filmed back-to-back...Tom Hardy (Max) the lead in Fury Road, and Charlize Theron (Furiosa) the lead in Furiosa. Apparently although the Furiosa script has been written, WB stopped short of actually filming in order to observe how moviegoers react to Fury Road.

I've read Fury Road is somewhat of a reboot; one scenario picking up in the middle of The Road Warrior (when Max flips the interceptor after he leaves the refinery the first time being captured instead of making it seem he died in the explosion), the other taking place immediately after The Road Warrior. I say possibly because there isn't an actual quote confirming this.

Was hoping this would be set around the same time as the original Mad Max. The thing I liked best about the original was that there was still some semblance of law and order, but that it was slipping away.

The post Road Warrior desert wasteland look and feel is less interesting- basically leaves us with one dimensional characters and a bunch of car crashes in the desert and tons of cgi.

Oh well, I guess it's the perfect teen summer movie.

Some interesting bits on why it wasn't Gibson from director George Miller.

Also a great quote from Miller:

quote:
"Roman Polanksi had a saying, which is that there's only one perfect place for the camera at any given time. And I learned that on the animations," Miller said. "You can move the camera wherever you like. But to tell the story — it was interesting how much you could influence the story by simply shooting from another perspective."

What this guy said.

The new one looks like it will be awesome and a lot of fun.

But the universe established in the orginal movie was so so so much better and I would venture to say darker since it lacked the cartoonishness of the 2nd and especially the third

That looks really really good! Can't say much for the original flick... have only seen bits and pieces. But as a kid I saw Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome several times. This movie definitely feels right at home with those flicks. Seems like they nailed the use of effects, HD visuals, etc. w/out going overboard and losing the gritty look of the movie and the deranged characters.

Yeah as far as trailers go, both of them for this movie have been great (and I am not a fan of the series at all).

Up there with Furious 7 and Force Awakens as the trailers of the year, imo.

I'm concerned about too much CG, but that is always the case. When you look at how the original Mad Max was made, the stunts were bad ass and often a gamble. Movies need more of that. CG isn't tangible and there are few boundaries.

I have the Australian accent version of Mad Max and I'd argue it is significantly better than the dubbed version.

Reminds you how significant MTV was in the 80's. having her in it and doing the video allowed for constant cross promotion on a channel every kid watched.

I seem to remember an article where Miller was really pushing for live action sequences, and minimizing CGI. Now, this trailer comes out with desert tornado/lightning/explosions, so maybe he got overruled?
