The universe in mad max was 100000000000 times better than the universe in road warrior and thunderdome.

Review from a buddy who saw an early screening:

Hey man, I get hyped about some movies. Just got out of a screening of mad max fury road. Not sure if you have seen the originals, but regardless the movie was insane. It is so well made I was trying to figure out how they pulled it off. It was filmed with 80% practical effects and on location. I have never felt so inside a movie like this one in a long time. I'm a huge action buff, and this is the best action movie I've seen in years. Please go check this out in theaters, it deserves the praise and money. It's all visuals and the story is subtlety told through it and minimal dialogue. Amazing world building, and I think you would appreciate it. It's bat**** crazy, but go see it.

9.3 out of 10 on imdb ratings. That's the highest rated movie this year ever. I can't wait to see it!

Btw in the trivia on imdb, it mentioned this......

After George Miller screened some footage at SXSW film festival, a man stood up and asked: "How the hell did you film that!?" That man was none other than director Robert Rodriguez.

Saw The Road Warrior with my dad the day it came out 33 years ago....first r rated movie with him. Blew me away.
Thunderdome underwhelmed me, but have high hopes for this.

Sounds like a dumb husband to me.

Instead of parlaying watching pitch perfect 2 into sex , he is gonna get her to do something else she doesn't want to do...

Actually it is a great movie, but more of a cult movie than say Godfather.

It is more like reading a graphic scifi book, Mad Max is.

In theater now, spoiler-free review to follow.

The first Mad Max movie was a great concept, but not a good movie, especially not the dubbed version.

Otoh, Road Warrior is incredible, timeless, classic. I hope Fury Road lives up to all I've heard.

Just finished. I think I'll need some time to process but I will go ahead and say some things.

1. The visuals are everything people are saying, just amazing. Sometimes I found myself looking for the remote to see stuff again.

2. The fights and chases were incredible, really well choreographed and believable. All the characters were great and believable physically.

3. Tom Hardy was good, but he was not Mad Max. Mel Gibson's portrayal of Max in Road Warrior was , I believe, the best acting he ever did. In that movie, Gibson portrayed every emotion seemlessly, usually without saying a word. Again, Hardy is good, but he's not Max. Maybe it's unfair for me to expect or demand that, but....

In all, it is much better than most movies put out these days, but I think Road Warrior is a better movie. I would give it 7.5 out of 10.

Looking forward to other opinions.

Just got out, thoroughly enjoyed everything...action sequences, storyline, pacing. Mel Gibson made Mad Max/Road Warrior so early in his career and he will forever be linked to that role...it would be very difficult for any actor to come in and totally remake that character. Tom Hardy did OK, but something just wasn't there for me. I never thought that Charlize Theron would have anything other than a leading role in this movie and she delivered. I thought the different tribes were pretty cool. I tried to brace myself that the movie would not live up to the 98% it was getting from Rotten Tomatoes. I'd give it an 8.5/10.

Just got back -- impression half way through the movie and confirmed at the end . . .
LOVED IT.

Awesome movie. Great stylized action and cinematography with insane stunts. I normally get turned off very quickly with car chase type stunts, but this one kept me excited.

I agree with Snowdog about Tom Hardy. I can't really think of a movie or role he has been in that I didn't like, but it's because he gets great roles and I like him and his acting style. That said, he is one of those actors that really has pretty much the same dynamic range, characterizations and emotions throughout his roles -- not a knock but some fanboys make him out to be more than that. One or two scenes in particular where I found myself tuned into the Hardy's "Max" character, and it just felt a little flat (in relation to what we have seen from Gibson).

But I went into the movie with open mind, and stand alone, this movie is one of the better action movies in a decade, easily. I hate comparing actors and directing styles, so that's the pass for me. This movie will get repeat viewings from people like me (adult male), teenagers (male and female). college kids and occasional young or old.

I saw recent Avengers, and I liked it, but immediately knew the next viewing would be at home. This movie I might see again in theater if occasion arises -- but I bet a lot of viewers will definitely see it again on big screen.

Just saw it. Agree with the two other posters. Just a few other random thoughts:

Charlize Theron is a badass and overshadowed Hardy I thought

I really liked all the night scenes, the lighting was really well done

Miller did a really good job of making this feel "other worldly", about 25 mins I was like, "where am I?"

Miller really uses the screen as his canvas. As already mentioned, there were a few scenes where you just wanted to pause and take in what was on the screen at the moment.

It kind of reminded me of when I saw 300 in theatres. Don't jump on me, it only reminded me for a second. I think it's because it has such unique action sequences and shots accompanied with an electric guitar in a lot of cases, that reminded me of it.

As I was leaving the theatre, I heard 2-3 guys say they thought it was "really weird". Just thought I'd throw that out there

This is one of the best action movies I have seen, and it does set the bar moving forward(as many critics have also mentioned)

Some more thoughts/opinions.

Friend said reminded him of 'Book of Eli' in style - agree.

Nostalgia -- kept thinking about all the times I booted up Rock Band video game with the opening sequence. You'll know what I'm talking about when you see it (probably my 3rd favorite character in the movie ).

Electric guitar guy just made me smile every time he was on screen. There were so many surreal images in that film, and his was pretty much the craziest.

What's amazing is that I've seen some of the greatest action movies ever in just the past few years.

The Raid, The Raid 2: Berandal, John Wick and now this. And most of these films have plots that can be summed up in one or two sentences.

There are some talented people making some fine action cinema right now.
