I seem to remember an article where Miller was really pushing for live action sequences, and minimizing CGI. Now, this trailer comes out with desert tornado/lightning/explosions, so maybe he got overruled?
I went back and watched the SDCC teaser from a few months ago and saw that they had done a lot of work with this scene:
The original had just the tanker truck blowing up (in a flat desert landscape). Now, they've added in the rest of the vehicles an added in the mountains. This makes sense, though; the logistics of everything going on in that shot (to say nothing about the safety factor) requires
some post-production magic.
I think that everything that could possibly be done with stunt people and vehicular mayhem for real was done on camera and the CG was kept to a minimum.
