Going into the weekend, everyone thought that the new F1 Sprint format would be the big news item of the weekend. Here it is Tuesday, and people are like "Sprint what?"

Sprint quali was pretty fun I thought. Shouldn't be an all the time thing but I wouldn't mind a few sprints a year

I hope they do a sprint in Austin but the rumor so far is Monza and Brazil

That's actually Spa rather than Monza.

If you were to run an F1 car at Indianapolis or a Daytona, how much faster would they run than the Indy cars or would there be a difference? I'm very new to auto racing so I wasn't sure how big the difference would be or if there was a difference.

It's a little complicated

F1 cars are not designed for ovals. They carry a lot more drag than indycars. Back when Hockenheim had its long straights they would top out in the low 220's mph. That was when they were running 3 liter V10s.

With today's regs, I'm guessing lack of braking zones on a superspeedway would hamper their ability to keep their batteries charged.

If they are going to have cost caps, there should be some sort of exception for incidents like this.

Agreed - a team should be able to restore a car to its previous condition without having it count towards the cap. The team would have to submit receipts, etc. to prove that it didn't improve on the car, however.

I don't disagree with the Stewards here. I think Hamilton was in the wrong and reaped a huge windfall for it. However, I think Redbull was wrong to continue pursuing it.

Netflix is releasing a documentary on Michael Schumacher on 9/15. I was fortunate to see him race in person 3 times and got to chat with him for about 30 seconds back in 2000 at the US Grand Prix.

Cota posted on Facebook about signing up with them to get the first news about a possible second race. I guess that's still in play. It would have to be the weekend before since Mexico is the next week

Hungarian qualifying underway. Merc has been Top 3 for both drivers all weekend so far.

Schumacher may not get to do qualifying due to FP3 crash.

not a fan of RB doing softs in Q2

Merc front row and Hamilton pole. Perez fails to start last lap before checkered flag and has to settle for P4. Max P3 to start.

Yeah that was kind of a cluster all the way around for RB.

It seemed pretty apparent Hamilton was holding back RB on that last qualifying lap. I'm fairly new to F1, but that doesn't seem to be normal gamesmanship from the other qualifying I've watched.

Edit: I could be wrong though. RB didn't seem too pissed about it.

The start to tomorrow's race will be quite interesting. RB will be on softs with Max P3 and Perez P4. Merc on front row on mediums with Ham P1 and Bottas P2. RB will likely use the softs to make a break on Merc early. If Merc aggressively defends, we could have another Silverstone incident.

As long as he Hamilton was doing the min lap time for the session, believe it was in the low 1:30s for this GP then there isn't an issue. That's the risk you take trying to make a flying lap with almost no time left

Ahhh gotcha. I didn't know there was minimum time. Thanks for the info!

It was RB's mistake not getting their cars out sooner.

Seemed crazy to wait so late to try another lap.

It is actually a very common technique, especially during Q3, to start a Hot Lap with minimal time left before the checkered flag. You have to time your Out Lap in order to cross the starting line before the checkered flag is waved. Pole is very often won on last minute laps, since the competitors can no longer counter the fastest time once the checkered flag is waved and they don't outpace provisional pole on their final lap.

Perez (and almost Max) got gamed hard by Hamilton because he was able to hold them back enough where Perez could not get to the line prior to the checkered flag. It was a legal move, but hardly seen as a gentlemen-type move.

I've got no issue with Hamilton making RB pay for making a bad decision. They 100% handed him that opportunity.
