If checo makes up 30 seconds and makes 3 overtakes in 12 laps I'll eat my hat.

That was on you Seb. Quit whining.

I know it's race 1 and a single sample but it seems like it'll be more competitive this year.

Max has got to get within DRS quick. Time and his tires are against him.

Welp. Gotta tip your hat to Hamilton, he did a hell of a job holding on to that car. Man I want to see someone else on top of the box.

Yeah, that certainly sucked.

Still looks like a good Mercedes and Red Bull battle for the season.

I thought I heard the announcers saying yesterday that track limits in turn 4 were going to be ignored unless you gained a clear advantage. It looked like lots of drivers were going over on turn 4 the whole race.

Pretty sure Gasly gets the award for the most disappointing race. Terrible showing for him.

So the vagueness there is the issue.

Typically track limits that are monitored are hard legal/illegal. Somewhere in the 30 lap range redbull called to their drivers that Ham and Bot were running wide and had been with no warning so to do that as well. Lap 38 or so Hamilton was called to be told that he would get a penalty if he ran wide again and responded with the fact he has been wide there the whole race.

So if it's sudden a penalty for gaining an advantage on lap 39 I'd hazard to say it was for the last 38 laps which is my issue with it, he gained an advantage by taking the corner faster and wider all race and got saved by it on lap 53 or whatever

Race control gift wrapped that one to Lewis and I am steaming about it. He ran just that wide almost the entire race and then it only comes into play when max passes him. FOH

To be fair Max was super wide and would have had to give that pass up anywhere on any track. Just really annoying and very Hamilton-esque for it to play out that way.

Yeah. Very selective in the enforcement. And Red Bull happened to get screwed the 2 times it was enforced.

Kudos to Red Bull for recognizing the problem, handling it on track, and not forcing the race directors to award or take away a win after the race was complete. It was the most sporting way to handle that situation....even if it hurt at the time.

It also sets up the season battle really well... Gonna be the most competitive season since I started watching in 2017.

And MB better get their head out their ass wrt to Bottas vs Hamilton vs Red Bull. They've been able to have their cake the last few years but Hamilton and Bottas should've split strategies and forced Red Bull to follow one or the other. They got lucky today it worked out but it was total luck... With Perez out of the race, they could've strategically won this race with either driver with less drama. But that brought the possibility of Bottas over Hamilton into play... And they were unwilling to make that choice.

Fun season ahead!

If the season has down to the wire finishes like this it will be a great season.

It was great to see how well both McLaren and Ferrari performed today. I also think Alpha Tauri will be a strong midfield contender most races.

Good stuff.

Just finished the race. All I'll say is it's insane for me to pull up Texags and see a notification that there's been 59 replies to this thread. The power of Netflix?

I didn't start watching F1 before quarantine and stumbling upon Drive to Survive. Now I'm locked-in every Sunday morning and looking at ticket packages for COTA.

I know personally I found this thread for the first time last season after years of watching but moved to the damn west coast during the season so between moving, 4-5am starts some weeks and no competition I didn't watch much after the first 5 or so races outside of highlights or recaps after the fact

Great race. So much complaining about track limits and I'm guessing in part because Lewis won. The rules were clear and the stewards laid out what they would do for turn 4; Leclerc and Masi confirmed as much. Verstappen passed off the track which is never allowed and he suffered the consequences for the second time in his career. Red Bull have no one to blame but themselves especially after complaining and getting caught out.

I wonder if the same people angry about the stewarding, or let's be honest Lewis winning, were just as angry at Monza in 2019, Baku 2017, or Spa 2008.

We're angry that the rules we not being applied evenly get outta here with this " oh they just hate seeing Lewis win" argument

I'll tell you what, I thoroughly enjoyed the race. It looked great on my TV, and sucked the stress right out of me, as sports are supposed to do. It was great, and the result was in doubt until the last lap.

Lol you're upset with rules not being applied consistently? Are you new to Formula 1?

Each of those races I mentioned had inconsistent applications of the rules, almost every F1 race does. I just want to know if people were fired up then as well.
