Wow, I suppose home sickness could have been a factor being from Maryland or maybe a scholarship issue. Connor a Schulman who came in during the same class has vastly outperformed him, I could see that being a favor given Turay was .7 faster in high school than Schulman

Maybe we can use the space or scholarship to attract another 110 hurdler or sprinter! Going to be an interesting off season for sure!

His choice of words seems to suggest so much hate and resentment for the school ("away from Texas a&M"). I am not sure if he was part of the group with Infinite Tucker, Jamaal Walton and Thomas Burns but Jamal Walton is very active tweeting these Transfer Portal announcements.

Coach Hon has 3 Seniors on the ladies short hurdles and now a transfer in Turay. If they don't want to come here we can find many other international athletes. A lot of SEC schools have many international athletes on their squads
There are a lot of Jamaicans and international athletes that would want to come and compete for Texas A&M. Look at Charokee Young, Lamara Distin, Tyra Gittens. Acquah and Mpoke. We can also get some hurdlers and sprinters. The Texas hurdlers and sprinters recruits want to go USC and LSU.

Exactly Hon recruited so well at Flordia State i think he can do that here, via the transfer portal or internationally! Having stellar Caribbean athletes in Distin, Charokee, and Gittens will help us tremendously! Sports media from the Caribbean have been actively covering these athletes and their success in the States on a bigger stage! I could only imagine top prep track athletes their are taking notice! With all the seniors on the guys team I could only imagine how much scholarship money we'll have to play with this summer! Henry is going to have to build a squad around our young 800 and sprinter guys like Miller, Clay, Achane, Broome, Martin, and Schulman! We can break it all down this summer!

I know he recruited Trey Cunningham who's one of the nations top hurdlers! He has made nationals all 3 years of his college career! He's going to land us a huge recruit soon! He was also the lead recruiter for Laila Owens! Hopefully he can boost our sprint and hurdlers group with his recruits!

That doesn't really match his bio - 30 at FSU would mean 75 at Cincy. I wonder if they're counting relay pool members as All-Americans. Anyway, 30 All-Americans at FSU is about 4/yr. That doesn't impress me given the talent in FL. We need to average around 12/yr to compete.

Quote:

Within his time as an assistant coach in Tallahassee, the women's program produced five top-20 NCAA Outdoor Championship finishes, including their second top-10 finish in 2019. Athletes coached by Hon generated 30 All-Americans with 19 first-team honors, 16 ACC event champions, six program records and three ACC records.

Coaching accolades for Hon include the USTFCCCA South Region Women's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019.

Athletes coached by Hon who earned ACC honors included Shauna Helps (2016) and Ka'Tia Seymour (2018) each being recognized as Women's Outdoor Freshman of the Year, Trey Cunningham (2018) being named indoor and outdoor Men's Freshman of the year, along with Seymour claiming ACC Championship Track MVP twice indoors (2018, 2019) and once outdoors (2019).

Prior to joining Florida State, Hon spent 13 years at the University of Cincinnati as a record-setting student-athlete as well as an assistant coach. The Cincinnati native spent seven years as a full-time assistant with the Bearcats, directing hurdlers and sprinters, while serving as the recruiting coordinator for his final two years.

I cannot really evaluate Coach Hon past performances as a coach because there are so many other variables to consider from year to year. I know Coach Henry must have seen something in him to bring him to Aggieland. Coach Henry normally choses his coaches wisely.

He has coached now two indoor seasons and currently in his first outdoor season. I have definitely seen improvement in Connor Shulman in the hurdles and Zhane Smith in the sprints who went from 7.50's in the 60m to 7.33 this indoor season and was unable to compete in the SEC championship. Aliu has also shown some improvements. The lady hurdlers have looked good at times but I feel sometimes is more mental than physical with some of our athletes. Turay has constantly not finishing his races (DNF) and I couldn't tell if injury or mental

Let see how the men sprinters do outdoors. Achane has already done well. Broome seems to be improving as well. I am also watching at the progress of Comick, Yeboah and Martin. The 4x100 has certainly looked good at times. This year has also been a struggle with Covid 19 and contact tracing with many of the athletes

I agree with much of what you said.

Turay has never gotten close to what he did in HS meanwhile Schulman has skyrocketed past his HS times on the bigger hurdles. That speaks volumes to me. Re: his Twitter post, there is an old saying about when an athlete runs fast, it's the athlete's doing and when an athlete doesn't, it's the coach's doing. People that don't do well look to blame anyone but themselves. I think in general, our sprinters/hurdlers are trending the right direction but there's always going to be outliers. It's unfortunate that Turay is one of those.

Tyra Gittens mentioned on TexAgs radio that Coach Hon has been a huge price on her multi events with her improvement in the hurdles! Like the others said Pat Henry does his research and gets the guys he wants. Another fact looked passed is Hon's recruiting ability! Hon is very active on social media and has upticked our sprint recruiting recently with guys like Martin, Broome, Achane, Schulman, and girls like Owens, Burnett, and Thorpe! He will succeed here!

Also an interesting tidbit on TexAgs radio... Pat Henry said he has considered and will consider putting Bryce Deadmon in the 4x100! This would be an interesting dynamic and he could possibly run a great curve! Hopefully we won't need him so he can be rested for the 400 and 4x400 and also the trials! I think a relay of Broome, Achane, Comick, and Yeboah can do some damage at NCAA and go low 38!

Really nice interview with Tyra. She has a great personality.
With Bryce Deadmon running the 4x100m then he maybe having two 4x100m relay teams this weekend from the pool Achane, Brome , Martin, Yeboah, Comick, Collins, Clark, Deadmon, Schulman. I know last time Coach Henry said Achane is a bit sore right now
I agree that Achane, Broome, Comick and Yeboah can do very well this year if they practice their exchanges and stay healthy
Syaira Richardson won't be running this weekend so i guess Laila Owens would step in for the 400m relay. Still no word on Jania Martin.

I know I'm not as high on Hon as you all but at least be reasonable in our expectations. There's no way we run 38 low in the 4x1. UH just set the record around 38.2 3 years ago and they had 3 100M finalists on their relay. Achane is the only short sprinter that can score at nationals right now. Yeboah (10.1), Broome (10.4), Martin (10.3), and Comick (10.3) haven't matched their best times and seem to be inconsistent/regressing. Is it covid, coaching, or something else? I don't know but I didn't see much improvement during the indoor season before covid hit or as indoors progressed this year.

I can go back and make an inference from past history though - with a talent rich state such as Florida as a recruiting base and only producing 30 All-American honors in 7 years isn't good. You can get 6 AA honors/yr just from the sprint relays. Different circumstances but I am skeptical until I see short sprint results. Maybe they can pull it together as the season progresses.

I think Comick is doing what he's always done at A&M, not necessarily regressing. Same with Martin (granted Hon has been his only coach). Yeboah is obviously not what he was in JC. He is WAY off. No idea what that is about. Broome has been at or better than his PR in the 200 all year so I'd say he's making good progress. They opened with a 38.7 which is a hell of a time so you have to give them credit for that. All in all, seems like it's a mixed bag.

No heat sheets up yet or thread for the Baylor Meet, but for the premiere races featuring pros Athing Mu is entered in the 400/800, Achane in the 200, Deadmon in the 400, Charokee Young in the 400, and Mpoke in the 400 hurdles! Jon Bishop will make his outdoor debut as well!

I'm a high jump official and had a jumper tell me that Coach Henry cut the team from 131 to 75 to help prevent Covid outbreak and contact tracing. Maybe this has something to do with it.

Dang I hope he only let most of these athletes (walk ons I assume) go for this season only! But I think it's a good move, there's just way too much at stake and every single athlete from Athing Mu to the student manager has to be locked in and cautious about covid protocols!

Pole Vaulters Bianca Cardenas, Hannah Searby and Logan Freeman are off the roster. Bianca and Hannah competed at the dual meet two weeks ago.

Someone asked Tyra why people getting cut from the team and her answer was that maybe the team is too big

Wow he wiped out girls pole vaulters, which none have cleared over 12 feet this year I believe. We will have two recruits coming in Heather Abadie who has cleared 13'9 and Regan Ruffner who has cleared 12'6! Logan Freeman is a good jumper but might be sidelined due to injury, so I'm thinking this roster clearance is just for the season or until covid is over! It's going to be a big off season for Pat Henry and crew!

Darn, hopefully he's okay! After his great 4:01indoors I'm excited to see his 1500! It would've been a great race for him to be in today, but hopefully he's racing next week! We get a chance to see Eric Casarez and Annie Fuller in the 5000 today!

On the thread for this weekends track meet the start list link is there and he isn't scheduled to run in the 1500 or 5000! Which is weird because the 12th man article said he would be! Either he was a late add or late scratch! It would be awesome if he were to run though! Here's the start list and schedule link https://tf.deltatiming.com/baylor/2021-michael-johnson-invitational

yes this is true got word directly from his mouth that he came down with it. He apparently was better at last weekend meet enough to be out and around people as he was helping officials with different events.

Looks like Tyra is going to have to do the octathlon and compete in the open high jump during the heptathlon during Nationals! She does get to open up with the long jump but the ext two days will consist of 8 events! Hopefully she'll have established a huge lead before then just in case she has to run extremely well in the open 800! Also great that we have Lamara, Tyra, and Deborah and triple jumpers competing the last day for possible points!

Actually those cut were not all walk ons and it was NOT because of covid as most athletes are now getting the vaccine. If they were worried about Covid then maybe the jumpers should not have gone partying in Houston two weeks before indoor SEC and returned with Covid.

Henry has decided to devastate loyal team members in order to focus on his chosen athletes. You talk about athletes on this forum as if they are TV characters but they are real people. On the list of 55 people Henry chose to either outright cut or leave on the roster but banish from practicing with their team, weight room and competitions you will find athletes who were the best in their state. Athletes with Aggie families who dreamed only of going to Texas A&M. Athletes who have given everything they had to this team while dealing with the hardships of at home classes for two semesters and not enjoying a real college experience. Athletes who were already devasted by losing an outdoor season last year and who burned eligibility at the UT meet only to have this outdoor season take away in an instant.

What you have supposed about Turay or the pole vaulters or the others you have dismissed as unworthy is short sighted. If you detected resentment from Turay's post you would find that the roster is full of that same resentment. No one deserves to be treated the way these athletes have been treated. No one can perform their best when they are told that coaching is reserved for their more important athletes and they are not and will never be important enough. For juniors who have just received their Aggie rings and were looking forward to a spring season, they have no options. They have just lost two seasons and can only hope they will be deemed good enough when the chosen athletes don't return after the Olympics. As an Aggie I'm disgusted by this.

Totally understand, if it were me or my kid in those shoes I'd be devastated as well! I've heard about the preferential treatment but I also know it goes like that at almost every top school! I have zero connections to the A&M program and I'm just a die hard fan that's here to spread support and knowledge of my alma mater's track team that I care for with all my heart! College sports is a business and the coaching staff is as elite as they come. I don't condone what they did, but if it's for the betterment of the team, then so be it! Pat Henry was so close to a national championship and it must have hurt him to fall short. You can't blame him for doing what is necessary and optimal to win a championship. We've always had one of, if not, the largest track and field programs in the nation. It was never this necessary to have so many athletes in a program that is only allowed 50-60 to compete in conference!

Also why attack me, I never said one word about Turay's post and just mentioned that he could home sick or dealing with a injury. We're all just supporting fans on here with one goal and that goal is to support and cheer for our Aggie track team with all our hearts! The track community is small as is, and on this forum is the only place where avid Aggie track fans can converse and share our thoughts and opinions on our beloved team, so no need to attack us! We're a tight-knit board here comprised of nothing but fans that just want to support this team, so either jump on board or leave us Aggie Track fans alone!

Also if you're going to create an account just to bash us few track fans at least spell Justin Bieber's name right... hahahahaha but if you actually are a fan of Justin Bieber DM me and we can discuss his latest album and compare it to his earlier works and argue about who's better Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber not about track lol.

It sad to hear about the 55 persons. I think we need to hear the full story behind this.
To be be fair to bloggers here we most times we get very little news on track and field and often times rely on social media to get little tidbits and thereby form our opinions based on that. It has always been difficult to get details on Track and Field here and it is always speculation on who is sick , injured, not here and why etc
I think we should have a full release explaining the details so that we can can make our own judgement on the situation. Whether it is a high level decision that he had to carry out.
I know the situation will be difficult for these athletes but it is not the end of the world. In fact it is new start that can transform their lives depending on how they approach it. Every disappointment is an opportunity to find more about yourselves and that true inner calling and passion. I wish them all the best in future endeavors and hope they don't let this disappointment make you bitter to Track and Field and the school.

So what's the story here? What changed? What reason was given?

I'm a little shocked there were that many people on the team. Looking at the posted roster I see 71 men (for 12.6 scholarships) and 57 women (for 18 scholarships). And 6 coaches.

Very well said! It is highly unfortunate. We get zero intel on the inner working of the track program and that's how it is for every program! We get more from this board than the athletics department! We're simply fans here who just want to discuss, share opinions, and react to the state of our program! It does hurt to see our fellow Ags go but sometimes a new start could be best, especially if "they weren't getting fair treatment from coaches" like the other poster mentioned!
