It was a great first day yesterday, Tyra Gittens improves two of her school records yesterday clearing 6'3.25 in the high jump above and a pentathlon score of 4612 nearly 600 points ahead of the other competitors. Bryce Deadmon reclaimed his top spot in the nation with a blazing 45.29 even as he slowed up at the end! James Smith was looking to break a 46 or land around a low 46 time but was unable to finish the race due to a hamstring issue. Connor Schulman stayed in the top 5 nationally in the hurdles with a time a 7.80. 800 runners Brandon Miller and Allon Clay are both in the top 15 nationally! Josh Brown is in the top 15 with the weight throw as well! Deborah Acquah made her season debut in the Triple Jump and moved to 2nd national with a leap of 45'1! Charokee Young moves into 2nd nationally with a blazing 400 time of 52.64! Day 2 begins at 12 and running events can be seen on ESPN+ starting at 1:30!

Great performances all round. Mpoke didn't run the 400. Hope is nothing serious. Hope James Smith recovers speedily because we need him especially on the relay. I saw Lamara Distin didn't compete in triple jump. Hope it is nothing serious. Let's see if she does the high jump today.
Tyra Gittens had a remarkable first penthalon meet. Anna Hall from Georgia posted a 4590 score just behind Tyra's 4612. Anna clocked a 2.07 in the 800m which is better than some of the current 800m specialist. Tyra must improve further in the 800m because Anna Hall is right behind.
It is getting crunch time with just one more home meet to impress before our last away meet before SEC.

Totally agree! But it seems the 800 from yesterday's pentathlon was very slow and it was great to see Tyra towards the front middle of the pack, compared to previous years! Hopefully at SEC's she can go out faster and know where Hall will be! That's going to be a big time matchup!

I saw where athing mu split on the 4x400 was 50.03. I dont ever remember an aggies lady split being that low. For those that know could that be the lowest split ever on the womens 4x400?

Jessica Beard ran a 49.14 to win A&M the 2011 National Championship! Although Mu ran that 50 slowing down at the end! I believe in a championship setting competing with Arkansas and USC Mu will certainly break 50 possibly break 49!!

Our girls 4x400 team ran a 3:31.09 which is 2nd in the national rankings all while missing one of our top girls! I wouldn't be surprised if our girls are ranked number one come Monday. We are number one nationally in the High Jump, Pentathlon (Tyra Gittens) the 800 (Athing Mu), the 4x400 relay in 2nd, 2nd in triple jump and long jump (Deborah Acquah), 2nd in the 400, (Charokee Young), and 3rd in the long jump (Tyra Gittens) along with many other top ten ranks! Pat Henry may have his strongest women's team ever assembled!

The ladies team definitely has a lot of potential scorers. The relay team ran without 4 potential sub 53 400m splitters in Syaira Richardson, Tierra Robinson Jones, Laila Owens and Julia Madibuike.
I hope Tierra Robinson-Jones (52.52) and Julia Madibuike (52.75) could find their form by the time SEC championship.

The men's team has shown growth over time especially with athletes who were not top recruits in Texas. All USC and by extension LSU top sprint and hurdlers athletes have being top 50 recruits, many of which never chose Texas A&M.

Bryce Deadmon was recruited by A&M with 400m PB of 47.64 and has developed into a top 400m athlete who could have won the NCAA in 2020 and now has the #1 time in the NCAA and the 5th best all time 300m in the NCAA.

Connor Schulman who had a 110m hurdle time of 14.27 when he came to A&M and now has run 7.80 for the indoor 60m hurdles in his sophomore year. I honestly believe he could have gone 7.70s in the final. See after his poor start, he was able to come back and win. Great run by him.

Josh Brown came here as primarily a discuss thrower and has developed into a descent weight thrower. He has a PB now of 20.56m which is just off Gabe Oladipo school record of 20.98m. I really wish he would break this record before the season is over. Gabe came here also not being a weight thrower and after two seasons he was able to break the school record before he transferred to Tech.

Tickets are super limited for indoor track because of reduced sales for distancing. I need 2-3 tickets for this weekend's Charlie Thomas Invitational. If you have access, please email me with what you'd would be willing to sell for at: aretiredgranma@gmail.com

Thanks & GigEm!

Taylor or Trini, do either of you know whether Devon Achane has competed yet and ,if so, events and times? Also, I think Bryce Foster enrolled early. Will he throw this year?

Achane has not competed yet but is training with track.

Foster won't graduate HS until May/June. Likely wants to have that last HS throwing season.

Look Out Below is correct. Even in high school Achane always took big breaks between football and track to allow himself to recover which always paid off in the end! I'll be surprised if we see Achane this indoor season but I'm sure he'll be ready to go guns a blazing this outdoor season in the 200, and possibly 4x100 relay! And Bryce did it early enroll so he can compete in his outdoor season in high school that was cancelled last year! He should be favorite to double medal in state, but I'm sure he has his sights set on more! I think he can go over 70 and 215 this season!

Thanks for the additional detail on Achane. Understand his pause but watching him run, I bet he would be good in the 60, as well. I guess you saw the clip on Lucci of Moko throwing the discus 201 as a 17 year old ? Any idea whether he will throw at A&M?

Yeah Achane would be good in the 60 and it'll benefit his training to manumission his 200 time! And I don't think Moko has thrown since high school! That clip he shared was a throwback! But it would be quite interesting to see if Coach De La Garza and Pat Henry consider this! It would be awesome to have two lineman on the track team!

Any college track coach is interested in a 200+ foot discus thrower.

That was TaylorSwift that wondered if de la Garza and Henry were interested in Moko but , yes, I agree that any track coach would be interested in a 200 foot plus discus guy and that was about 3 years ago!!

But they were unable to further develop Gabe in the discus despite his HS marks.

Gabe Oladipo is a strange development! I know his high school marks were world class, but he switched from gliding in shot put to the spin and has struggles with the 16 pound shot! He holds the school weight throw record and was developed pretty good there, as well as making it to the national prelims in the discus! I really wish he would have stayed an Aggie, but I'm glad he's having a great indoor season at Tech! Coach De la Garza has always been more discus and javelin heavy, and he will have a strong javelin group this outdoor season! As well as having Josh Brown make nationals in the weight throw and hopefully the discus!

Oladipo was also a great HS shotputter and he has not done as well as expected at either A&M or Tech. Does that mean both schools have a coaching issue or is something else going on? Development does not always fall singularly on the shoulder of the coach.

He has become a great weight thrower though -- he holds the school record at both schools.

Gabe best at A&M in the indoor shot put was 17.79m. His best after two years at Tech is 18.01m so not much of a development in shot put after two years at Tech.
His development in the weight throw must to attributed to Texas a&m because he was not a weight thrower coming to A&M.
In the discuss he lacked consistency. He would would have a good throw and then several not so good throws. His PB at A&M in the discuss is 56.84m which is not bad at all
Sorry he thought the grass was greener on the other side but kudos to the A&M coaching staff for developing him into a good weight thrower. At least he could make NCAA indoors

The good news is that Achane is finally listed on A&M roster on Directathletics and TFRRS sites

Lets see if he will run at Arkansas this weekend before SEC championship

that is awesome!! I'm not sure if he can jump in and drop a sub 21 straight out of the gate, but it would be great for him to get a race under his belt before outdoors because we could really use him in a 4x100 because we've been lacking there the last couple years. A relay pool of Jace Comick, Emmanuel Yeboah, Lance Brooke, Ryan Martin, Devon Achane, and Jake Lanier could hopefully put together a strong sprint relay to add some points, to a loaded 400 and 800 squad! How do you think a 4x100 shakes out for us Triniaggie?

I think the men's 4x100 relay team has a great shot to do very well and probably have a chance to break the A&M relay record of 38.52.
This year for the first time in probably a long time as far as I can remember the team will be comprised of pure 100m and 200m sprinters. Over the years we always used 1 or 2 400m specialist or 400m hurdle specialist on the 4 x100 relay. In the past Deon Lendore, Robert Grant and in recent times Bryce Deadmon had been used to make up the relay team.
This year Jace Comick, Emmanuel Yeboah, Lance Broome, Ryan Martin, Devon Achane are all 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 100m sprinters which augers well for the relay team. If they can practice and work on the relay exchanges I think they would do very well even a school record

The 4x400 could also break the NCAA record with Devin Dixon and Carlton Orange joining the team.of Bryce Deadmon, Mpoke, and James Smith

I think A&M is planning to break the 4x800m NCAA record this outdoor season with Carlton Orange, Devin Dixon, Brandon Miller and Allon Clay

I agree 100% it's been a while since had solely sprinters on this men's squad! And that relay can make a huge difference! I hope to make it out to Texas Relays cause I can sense many Aggie Records might be broken that day!! Even a women's 4x800 team of Mu, Mustin, Barrington, and Jenkins can Field a nice squad! It's a great time to be an Aggie Track Fan!

Other performances that was impressive for me this weekend was

1. Zhane Smith 7.33 in the 60m. She came here more of a long jumper and has been developing into a decent sprinter. Once she could get down to the 7.20s she could make NCAA in the 60m. Her 6.30m in the long jump already has a good shot of making NCAA but she can improve that since she having some really good foul jumps.

2. Jania Martin 23.44 in the 200m. She has been improving in every race and hope she can get down to low 23s or 22s high and make the NCAA. She already has a 53s in the 400m and has been contributing to the relay team.

3. Jon Bishop PB of 4.05.44 in the mile is a good time although not a NCAA qualifying time but certainly can score at SECs

4. Tyra had another PB in 60m hurdles of 8.28 and could go faster by SECs. She has to accumulate as much points as possible before the 800m in the penthalon because Anna Hall is running light out in the 800m.

5. Kennedy Smith finally tied her PB in the 60m hurdle of 8.25 and can improve and potentially score at SECs in the hurdles with Kaylah Robinson. Just need some consistency from Kaylah Robinson.

DeWitt Thomas could be a factor outdoors in the 4x4 too. He was going to have a tremendous outdoor season in 2020 before covid hit.

Statement from coach Henry on status of his 4x400m relay team

"I've been coaching 48 years and I don't know that I've ever not been able to run a 4x4 ever," said Henry, who had five quarter-milers sit out Saturday. "I needed to rest a couple, and if you have someone a little bit sore, I've always been able to leave a person out and run somebody else. But now with somebody sore and still dealing with COVID, it worries me going forward, and I have to be extremely careful."
