Roughly how long does it take to figure out whether they sign or not?

I think the lowest percentage of first ten round picks to sign the last 3 years is like 97.5%. Last year, only two players drafted in the first ten rounds didn't sign. So basically, if a guy is picked in the first ten rounds, he's pretty much gone. Those slots are so valuable to teams, thay usually have a pretty good indication of what it'll take to sign a player before selecting him.
This is not accurate for high school players. We could easily have 3 high school players who have committed to the Ags drafted tomorrow who will come to A&M.

No, that is accurate. With the new (relatively) rules with slot allocations for rounds 1-10, a team will not draft a player that doesn't agree in advance to sign for a certain amount. So a team about to be on the clock would go to Alex Scherff and say "we'll pick you here if you agree to a signing bonus of $x, xxx, xxx." If he hesitates or says no, they go to the next guy on their board. If Scherff's number is high, then he won't be drafted despite his high projection.
This has also led to spots in 9th and 10th going to Seniors that have little leverage. Teams know they will sign so they can use their slot money to get one of the higher picks and guys like Barash can say they were a 9th round pick.

For those of you more plugged in.. if scherff doesn't get picked tonight (rounds 1-2), would that point toward him making it to campus?

The odds would be more in our favor. However, assume his number to sign is $2 million (I'm making this up). If he is not picked in the first round, a team would need to draft other players below slot in order to pick him at a later time.

If the Twins sign the first overall pick for $5,000,000, they would have $2,770,700 to allocate to other players later in the draft; the first overall pick is "worth" $7,770,700. This scenario would allow for Scherff to sign as a later round pick.

The further he falls, the more a team would need to make up the difference between slot and what Scherff is looking for. The further he falls, the better chance he has to land on campus.

Here are the "Assigned Values" for the first 3 rounds just so people have a grasp of slot value. Now imagine that the Twins take Kyle Wright (RHP-Vandy) with the #1 overall pick, but they pay him a bonus of $5.77M. That is $2M under the assigned value for the 1-1 pick. That means the Twins will have an additional $2M to spend on picks 2-10, over and above their assigned value. The Twins have $14,156,800 in bonuses to spend on those 10 rounds (+ sandwich picks). Generally college seniors have little/no leverage as they can't choose to go back to school. They either sign for what they are offered or they have to play independent ball. Not many choose to go the independent ball route. (J.D. Drew, a Boras client did in '97, and a few years ago James Paxton did after he tried to return to school but was ruled ineligible by the NCAA - both were juniors, fwiw). So if those seniors sign under their assigned value it frees up cash to sign kids that may otherwise have "signability" issues. It's worth noting as well that if any player picked after the 10th round signs for a bonus of more than $100K then the amount above $100K is deducted from the team's bonus pool. ...if teams exceed their assigned bonus pool then they are subject to a variable luxury tax of 75%-100% of the amount of their overpayment.

The most bonus money given since the new CBA is $6.5M so Minnesota will definitely have some extra cash to spread around later in the draft. FWIW, only 2 players drafted #4 or later have ever even cracked $4.5M - one of them our very own Kohl Stewart a few years ago.

Turns out I underestimated the penalties.. not just a luxury tax. Also the possibility of losing draft picks the following year.

Quote:

Penalties: Here are the penalties that are assessed to clubs that pay bonuses over their allotted bonus pool.

0- 5% over- 75% tax on the overage

5- 10% over- 75 % tax on the overage and loss of the team's first round pick the next year

10- 15% over- 100% tax on the overage and loss of the team's first and second round picks next year

More than 15% over- 100% tax on the overage, and loss of the first round picks in the next two years' drafts

Kohl Stewart should be a cautionary tale.. 4 years later and he's got a losing record in AA. Hope Rob can convince most of these guys to get to campus.

Not sure I follow.

Are you suggesting that Kohl would have gone higher in the draft (than fifth overall) if he had come to college? Or that he would be progressing through the minors faster?

I like to see every prospect possible come to college (especially Aggies) but not sure I would use a guy that went fifth overall as a cautionary tale.

Yeah, I think coming to college would've helped him develop into a pro pitcher faster. I think it's easier to develop when you aren't riding a bus to nowhere, USA every week. But it's all speculation of course. He got a huge payday, so I'm not sure he's complaining about it.

I didn't realize it had been that long since Kohl Stewart was drafted in 2013. This is his 4th/5th season in the minors and he's struggling at AA. Seems like he's fallen behind schedule a little bit

Or he could have came here as a QB and transferred to tu to watch Chollie walk out on him and we could have had the trifecta of transferring QB's last season.

I don't think I buy into the theory that you develop into a pro player faster at college than you do in the minors. Do I think it's more fun? Hell yes. But if your desire is to be a major league pitcher I don't see how working in that direction under the tutelage of pro-instructors day in, day out, without 15 hours of classes to worry about is a slower way to get there. ...even if you do have to ride a bus.

Any idea why Hall would be picked up before Scherff? Alex seemed to be well ahead in all the projections so it must have been reservations about him being signable in the end, right? Would seem to be good news for the good guys.

Did Adam Hall stumble across A&M at random after the chic fil a bowl 5 years ago and do a book report on them, and become obsessed with wearing the maroon and white?

No? OK. He's gone.
