As an assistant absolutely.

Bucky ball! So many people we're whining about our offense style why not go with a system that scores over 80 pts regularly
I don't really think Bucky ball can work at the power conference level. I'd be pretty skeptical if that is the route we go.

What about Luke Murray?

We'd have the legend of all legends in the stands at every game
I'm on board with it, even if Bill never shows up to a game.

Good recruiter and very involved in the UCONN offense.

Plus, for Trev, probably cheaper and easier to hire than a sitting head coach.

We've been half joking about Bill Self but I'd at at least put in a call up there and see what the vibe is. That situations has kind of a Calipari feel to it where maybe both sides are over it.

Its hard to see a hook that gets McCasland here. Even his wife went to Texas Tech.

Hiring an assistant with no HC experience is a risk, but this is an instance where I'd be on board with it. We would have to ensure we are willing and able to cut bait quickly if it is obviously not working after 2-3 years.

Let's run a 2-fer on Bama and get Vaughn and Oats

Agree completely. Then let Oats go to KU and we kill 2 with 1.

Hiring an assistant might be riskier than ever, for a power conference team. It has to be a coach ready to roll in and fill a roster.
bobinator

Yeah I don't love the assistant route unless we get really down the list.

Prepare to be disappointed. Trev is going to cost cut, unless donors give $$.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but wonder if we give Mike Brey a call

I dont think it is a good idea to hire an assistant during a rebuild. It is hard enough to make the jump to a HC, but making the jump to HC with a total rebuild seems like a recipe for disaster. If you hire an assistant you better give them a bunch of money to buy a roster.

I can say I'm really not sure I have a lot of confidence in Trev Alberts, but not sure that is founded in any kind of reason or reality. This search will say a lot about him as an AD.

I don't know why this would be the case. Yes, we need to be careful about our spending, but it also makes financial sense to invest money into men's basketball. It actually has the potential to make money.

Hiring some no-name and going for multi-year rebuild could actually cost more in loss of tickets, donations, etc. than hiring a guy that can fire up the fan base right away.

Tech basketball is a premier job. Their facilities coupled with their commitment to the sport has made that job top tier.

Agreed. Making the tournament in basketball is huge marketing for a school.

I'm just basing this off of what he's done. Early - no HC experience. Almost hired Stoops - a "C" level coach. We settled for a B-

He's not instilling confidence based on the hires he's made so far.

Maybe I'm conditioned to think we're always gonna go for a mid-major (Buzz was different, not a mid-major guy but he had some history here) but if we wind up mid-major or assistant, i think in this age we'd need to pair him up with a veteran guy as associate head coach to help with the learning curve of how to run a program. Someone who is likely done with being a HC but still has knowledge and experience. Love the idea of Rodney Terry on the staff and there's a ton of dudes out there still in the game but not on the HC level or maybe HC in the G-League, etc. who would fit the bill. My opinion...we need heavy recruiting and heavy development on staff since we're not likely to have a huge NIL component.

Can't really credit the almost Stoops hire to Alberts when Bjork was still the AD.

Trev didn't make the football hire.

He wasn't the AD yet during the Stoops/Elko deal, Bjork was.

The Earley thing was a risk. Everyone knew it. Obviously it looks dumb now, but it was a decent thought. A lot of people in the industry liked Earley as an up and comer, by hiring him you bring back a talented roster at a time that you're trying to build momentum for some new facilities. I can see why you'd make that call and roll the dice versus hiring from the outside and doing a total rebuild job.

It didn't work, but I don't think the decision was made just in an effort to be cheap.

Earley wasn't a mistake last year. Keeping Earley after this year will be a mistake.

I'll second Luke Murray. Think that's probably my top hope.

Second would be Alan Huss.

I like Beard but I'm not sure I believe that's feasible. Would be a great hire though if possible.

Which he will do to pinch pennies. Losing all momentum.

Trev also had Earley pushed on him by the players and boosters to keep the roster intact. He wasn't able to do an actual coaching search.

That's one problem we have at A&M that no one wants to talk about. The booster pressure to hire specific people is intense. Basketball boosters are undoubtedly in his ear about who he needs to hire and if it doesn't work out he will get blamed and those same boosters will pressure the next hire, too.

I thought the same briefly but Kentucky to Arkansas is not the same as Kansas to A&M. Arkansas has made the sweet 16 in 4 of the past 5 years.
