It took 6 days after Virginia Tech was beaten by Duke in the 2019 NCAA Tournament for it to be confirmed that Buzz Williams was being hired, and that deal was basically a done deal for months before the end of the season.

Sure. Got any basketball coach related thoughts?

Random thoughts about potentially hiring an assistant like Luke Murray (Uccon), Sampson (son of Kelvin Sampson from UH) or a mid-major with potential like Alan Haus (High Point).

I am very intrigued by both of them but feel both Murran and Sampson are guys who, if they do well then they will look for their next "basketball school gig." I The more I read and listen about Alan Haus, the more I think the can do actually pretty good here. High Point is not a basketball power but in 2 seasons they were both first place win and his team did pretty well against Purdue (even with so many limitations). He has great "pedigree", since he was an assistant under Greg McDermott and also played for Dana Altman (Oregon).

It is not an exciting-level hire but a hire with tons of potential if given half or 3/4 of the resources that Beard was promised ($7 Million NIL). What if you also pair him up with some good, strong Aggie assistants, like Joseph Jones?

You can't worry about guys leaving down the road. You hire the best coach you can hire right now.

And we don't need Aggie assistants, if we're going with an unproven head coach we need experienced high-level assistants. Joseph Jones has been a coach for five years and four of them were at Tarleton. Maybe he's got some potential, but that's a reach right now.

Joe Jones did a good job as the interim assistant at Tarleton for months while Billy Clyde was having some more health issues. Give him a shot instead of going after a mid major coach that only uses A&M for a resume builder.

Until Jones uses it as a resume builder….

Most athletes (and coaches) see any job as just another transaction, and I would bet that even applies to Mr. Jones.

I don't get what choice people think Trev has had in all of this deal.

A coach can't accept our job until the current coach leaves it. And this wasn't a situation where we knew for absolutely certain he was going to leave, even though we knew he'd try to, and we did know for absolute certain we weren't going to fire him. So we're not even 100% sure we're going to have an opening.

So maybe we've got some tentative offers out there or at least some feelers, but a coach isn't going to commit to a job that's not open when other jobs are open. By the time our jobs comes open, almost all of the "next big thing" coaches have already taken jobs that are almost all AT LEAST as good as our opening. (Pitino, McCollum, Medved (Minnesota isn't as good but its his alma mater), etc.)

Next, if you're the AD and you hear that Chris Beard is interested (let's just forget the off the court stuff), you have to pursue right? So based on everything you're hearing, from him or from his agent, he's interested, you have to go all the way down that path and see if you can get him right? It doesn't work, you move on.

What other option is there?

This isn't directed towards Alberts (specifically) but I've always been curious how these AD's "work" throughout the year/season. Do they watch games, do they evaluate coaches, do they keep an eye out just in case? Sure, there was nothing to suggest A&M would be looking at a change, but if Trev didn't at least wonder, question that maybe Buzz is looking to move on (Buzz's signature M.O.) than shame on him.

I would hope with what these AD's are getting paid, that they are always preparing, positioning to make a move if need be. I'm not saying Alberts wasn't ready, I'm just not sure how "ready" these guys are suppose to be (on a yearly basis). It did get me thinking, is there any way to "audit" Alberts phone records/emails to see exactly what kind of messages/calls went out (as far as timeline), as I'd be super curious to know when he figured out when he needed to start doing his job.

Even if you could get the records there's going to be layers of insulation between athletic directors and coaches. That's half of the entire point of agents and search firms is to kill the paper trails on these things.

But I'm positive that Alberts is smart enough to have seen this coming months ago if not as far back as last year and I'm sure he had, or had someone he trusts, put together a list of possible candidates.

I've said this before though, that coaching searches a lot of times just come down to timing. We'd have had A LOT more options if Buzz would have left three weeks ago. We'd have also been a lot better off from a coaching search perspective if neither us nor Maryland made the tournament. But that's not what happened.

He's been talked about, probably more on the realistic targets thread, but I just don't see how you overlook his time at Vandy. They went all the way downhill.
