The fact we beat one of the better teams in the West without Wemby, Sochan, AND Vassell says a lot about how the depth improved since last year.
No matter what!

I actually don't really think so. I think Keldon and Bassey both had really great games, Tre was high on +/- (likely due to Branham/Bassey) but didn't have a good game (1-3, 3 assists, 3 turnovers ) and Branham/Mamu weren't good.

My thought is that our long term playoff rotation would look something like this right now:

C: Wemby
F: _____
F: Sochan
G: Vassell
G: Castle

Bench:

Big: ________
Defensive Wing: Julian?
Scoring Wing: ________
Point :Tre Jones

Keldon could maybe be a scoring wing off the bench at times, but his defense still sucks and he is too unreliable. I love having him on the team, but if we are going to win, he is going to be a 10th Man. I think Blake is great as a 3rd PG, but unless he learns to shoot, I dont think he is more than that. Branham has played much better this year, but I still don't believe in him. I like Collins as an enforcer, but he needs to make like $5m/year going forward after this contract if he is gonna hang around. Bassey has made the most of every minute he has been in the game and I would love it if he could become a backup rotational big for us.

I think having two veterans like Barnes/Paul make a massive difference in the team overall.

But really hope we get two decent picks this year in the draft.

I'm not sure I'd agree. Keldon, Bassey, and Paul all had great nights. And okc shot 30% from three for the night vs 41% for the Spurs.

We played a great game and beat them but it was one night.

I really believe in Bassey, aside from his constant health issues. Last year he was far and away our second best defensive player before he got hurt. It was only 200ish minutes because of the injury, but last year when he played he had:
  • The best rebounding rate on the team
  • The second best block percentage by a substantial margin, and he was closer to Wemby's block percentage than he was to any of our other rotational bigs; his block percentage is actually comparable to the elite rim protectors of the league
  • Second best DRTG by a wide margin
  • Somehow the best ORTG of anyone that sniffed the rotation
  • The highest FG% by a chasm

I know those are all just numbers and based on a small sample size, but man he passes the eye test to me as well. He is a high-end rim protector and rebounder, and his size and leaping ability puts a lot of pressure on defenses to defend him on the roll. He was a top 10 prospect coming out of HS despite not moving to the US until he was 14 and re-classifying to start college early. I was honestly super bummed when we had to cut him and re-sign him for the Barnes trade, because that 3 year unguaranteed deal was an incredible bargain. I am really hoping he continues to get minutes and we sign him to a long term contract to be the backup 5. Plus he went to HS in SA which is pretty dope too, and I think he is the archetype of a big that can play some minutes with Vic as needed since he is athletic enough to guard wings.

I think it is possible. He does a great job of rim protecting and can move out on some PFs. But the health is a concern like you said. All we really need is a guy that can give us 15 great minutes a game and he could be that. But I am not sure he can be more than that. Offensively, he's an oop and open dunk guy and thats it. He needs to be able to rim run to really be a rotational player and I a not sure he can really do that now.

And while his per minute numbers are all great, most of those do come against 2nd/3rd team guys. That's why I am hesitant with him. He needs to be able to fill in big minutes if Wemby is hurt or in foul trouble and I think he is a long way from there for now.

But at his salary, I am thrilled to keep him and hope for the best.

Curious as to why you aren't sure he can rim run. He's 6'10 with long arms and a great vertical. Yesterday he was dunking everything that came in his radius, he can definitely be a lob threat and OKC was scared to death of him on every roll albeit that was partially bc they have no Centers.

When he scores it's generally off a missed defensive rotation or broken play. He's getting the ball within 3 ft of the basket and he's dunking it.

I'm saying rim running as in being the roller from a PnR. I don't really see Bessie scoring within the flow of the offense so much as being able to get a back door Alley-oop or get great position under the basket and just jump up and dunk it. That's what we saw the last couple nights.

I think for him to be a rotation player he needs to be able to work better within the flow of the offense than he has shown an ability to so far. That doesn't mean he won't be able to do that. I just haven't seen it

Back to Back wins with the top 3 players on the team injured?

32 assists for the Spurs and 8 players scored in double digits.

I'm generally shocked at how many teams overlooked both Dalton K and McCain. I was super impressed with both of those players and would have loved to get either at 8. Meanwhile, Dillingham looks like a miss right now.

I think Knecht is in the perfect position for him to succeed. Lakers don't care at all about defense, so Knecht sucking there doesn't matter. They have Anthony Davis, LeBron, and Austin Reaves around him to take pressure (and defenses) off him. Knecht is getting good looks because he is a talented shooter but the 4th option on that team offensively.

He likely doesn't look as good on a team focusing on defense and without players with the gravity the Lakers' top 3 players have. For the Lakers trying to win now before LeBron ages out or quits, I think it is an ideal fit.

On McCain, I know Enzo and I talked about him some and both liked him. I still wanted Devin Carter more b/c I see Devin as the better two way player, but McCain is easily exceeding everyone's expectations by a long shot. I'm still a Dillingham hater based on size and DefIQ, but willing to give him a pass for a few years.

I posted this Spurs-specific BigBoard in June

Quote:

1. Castle
2. Risacher
3. Sarr
4. Sheppard
5. Salaun
6. Clingan
7. Devin Carter
8. Jared McCain
9. Dalton Knecht
10. Pacome Dadiet
11. Jakobe Walter
12. Matas Samanic
Salaun was always a project, but hasn't looked that good and Walter looks awful. Dadiet dropped hard in the rankings after that.

Enzo:

Quote:

KOC interviewed Jared McCain. Seems like a Spurs player on and off the court. Really intelligent and self aware. Currently 9 on the ringer big board but KOC says he's moving him up next Monday.

Trading Dillingham away opened up the slot we took Harrison Barnes in, which netted us that unprotected swap.

So we essentially got Harrison Barnes, two unprotected swaps and an unprotected 1st from two teams that are historically bad over the last couple decades for the #8 pick. I'm still good with that, even if Knecht and McCain are playing great right now. The veteran leadership that Paul and Barnes are providing is hard to quantify, but we all certainly see it.
