Not the playin race I was anticipating to be excited about this year.

Mitch made a comment post game that they are going to use this time off to look at and evaluate the lineups. Lol

It is a fact that the team hasn't an organized practice since the Fox trade. It's really hard to make big adjustments on the fly while only playing live games. I fully expect some changes during the break.

You don't need practices to look out there and think hmmm maybe we need to try Castle starting with Fox and CP3 coming off the bench.

Moving on to the draft....think any chance that Spurs trade both of their 1st round picks to move up in draft or package them for an established star if both of those picks arent favorable? Hard to see them onboard 2 more rookies with guaranteed contracts.

Having players on cost controlled rookie contracts is insanely valuable now. A 10th pick makes about $5m/year. A 15th pick makes about $4m/year. You have them locked into that for 4 years. These are around 4% of the salary cap.

I think the Spurs use at least one pick and might use the other if they rate the player high but also might trade back to have two picks next year or in a following year. Also possible to trade up if they super value a player a few spots up, but I see that as unlikely.

This year's draft is super deep with a lot of valuable players that will be around even in the mid-picks.

St. Joseph's PF Rasheer Fleming is shooting 55/41/70 and putting up 16/9 with 1.6s and 1.6b. He's expected to be picked in the 15-25 range. He's a junior that turns 21 in the summer and plays in the A10, but he played really well against Villanova and Texas.

Liam McNeeley fro UConn, Tre Johnson from sip, Kon Knueppel from Duke, Asa Newell from Georgia, Thomas Sorber from Georgetown and Khaman Malauch from Duke are all supposed to be in that 6-15 range, and all fill needs at shooting, forward, or post.

Because there are so many good options, I think it is more likely we keep them. We don't really have any attractive contracts to move now. No one wants Keldon's last 2y35M. Maybe next year.

ESPN updated its mock draft yesterday:
Quote:

9. San Antonio Spurs

Jeremiah Fears, PG, Oklahoma
Freshman
| TS%: 58.3%

Scouting report: The SEC has been unforgiving at times for the 6-4, 182-pound 18-year-old who plays an outsized role for Oklahoma, leading all projected first-rounders with his 32% usage rate. Still, what makes Fears special is the way he handles the ball, gets to spots on the floor out of pick-and-rolls, passes, draws fouls and scores in a variety of ways, helping keep the Sooners in the NCAA tournament conversation. Showing growth with his defense, decision-making and shooting would help cement his candidacy as a top-10 pick. Fears' talent has been vividly displayed even when he has struggled from an efficiency perspective. -- Givony

NBA fit and intel: Shot creation was a major need for the Spurs prior to acquiring De'Aaron Fox, and Fears should be intriguing as a potential sparkplug scorer who wouldn't have to be forced into major minutes. His flashes of talent will have to outweigh his shortcomings from a physical and defensive perspective, but he'd have the opportunity to learn behind Fox and eventually pair with the bigger and more defensive-minded Stephon Castle. -- Woo
Quote:

12. San Antonio Spurs (via Atlanta)

Joan Beringer, C, Cedevita Olimpija (France)
Slovenia
| TS%: 59.6%

Scouting report: Beringer has drawn increasingly significant crowds of NBA decision-makers in Slovenia. The 18-year-old has responded with some spectacular moments on the defensive end, proving to be one of the most versatile players in the class with his ability to cover ground on the perimeter, switch onto smaller players, and protect the rim, leading both the EuroCup and Adriatic League in block percentage. Playing basketball for only three years, Beringer had zero high-level experience coming into the season but is improving every week, giving him unlimited upside to grow into long term. -- Givony

NBA fit and intel: San Antonio owns this pick unprotected from Atlanta, originally acquiring it in the 2022 Dejounte Murray trade. Adding a high-upside young interior defender in Beringer, who could take on some responsibility in the paint and allow Victor Wembanyama to handle a more versatile defensive role, would give the Spurs a different dimension. Beringer's upside and ability to defend bigger bodies would make him an intriguing option as a young rim protector on the right timeline with the rest of the team's core players. -- Woo

This was easily the dumbest draft for us ever. We use one pick on a PG that cant shoot right after trading for Fox, then we pick a center that some question if he would be drafted in the 2nd round. Primo thinks he is a stretch.

All of it is super terrible and makes Givoney look like an idiot. Two lottery picks on two guys that can't shoot, and they are both guys that can only be backups to our two best players, IF they develop.

What a garbage mock. Spurs need a strong shooting SF and a backup big.

Every coach I know would disagree with you. Practice time is pretty important especially when you want to make changes.

A draft guy to watch is Derik Queen. He has a lot of guard skills in a big body, maybe similar to Boris Diaw. The big immediate problem for us is he can't shoot threes. (2-22 for season) but he is shooting 76% from the line and has a soft touch on midrange shots.

He seems to have good BBIQ, especially on offense, and is active defensively. To be able to play with Wemby, he would need to be able to play on the perimeter some, like Diaw could. I'm not sure if that is possible, but he does move really well for his size.

The negative is he would not be a rim protector as a backup center. But he does have a face up and a back down game, and I think that could work with Wemby. Just need him to expand that range. He is much more of an offensive threat than a defensive anchor, and we really really need that backup defensive anchor that a guy like Sorber or Malauch would give. But maybe if we sign a Kornet or someone, they could do that and play with Queen as well.

Interesting guy to think about.

I'm sure I'm the only degenerate watching all star weekend stuff on a Friday night (and valentines day no less) but Castle got a lot of love during the Rising Stars game from the broadcast team and he hit the game winner as well.

Also my goodness the Golden State dancer girls are incredible.

I didn't watch it, but look at this court awareness. This is straight up a Jokic pass.

Easily the most impressive guy on the squad. Basically ran point for the last 3/4 of the game.

Made my kid watch that play again on the reply...just hauling the board in with one hand and rifling it 60 feet for the dime. Just sick.

My boy is a huge Castle fan. We watched tonight. Told him to enjoy and remember that pass because it's one of the best you'll ever see in a game

The only Auburn guy showing up in either round in mock drafts is Johni Broome

Chad Baker_M is already 25, so no one will use a draft pick on him. But he'd be a great UDFA.

He's 8mo older than Devin Vassell.
