That press conference was tough to watch. Luka was practically trying to hold off tears when he said that he never told anyone that he wouldn't sign a supermax with the mavs, that Dallas was home, that he hasn't been able to think about basketball the past couple of days, etc.

I feel awful for him because he really seemed to have loved Dallas and was thinking Dallas may be his home for the next 15+ years (which is backed up by the fact that he was going to be closing on a home soon).

What is absurd about the claim that they were initially discussing a deal that involved more assets going to Dallas? Common sense says that happened. And if it didn't, then that means Nico's initial offer was asking for AD, Christie, and one first and nothing more.

Because that's not the claim that was made, it was the claim substituted for the actual claim once it was pointed out how laughably absurd said claim was.

This whole discussion started with a video clip stating as fact that Dallas and LA had a deal, and then Nico was pressured/bullied into accepting a lesser deal for the same return after that. It was then pointed out how unbelievable that is and how that doesn't happen, and so the argument was paraphrased and edit by some here to attempt to claim it was making a less absurd claim.

Quote:

So if you think the claim is absurd, that means you believe that Nico didn't ask for another first or another good young player? That's even more absurd if true (and like I said makes Nico look even worse).

No, I believe there was a back and forth until the deal as it happened was ironed out. I do not believe that a deal was ironed out and then Nico was shoved into a locker until he agreed to less because that isn't a believable claim. It was, however, the claim that was made.
You're both taking hyper levels of analysis on language from a guy speaking off the cuff that doesn't exist in real world communication. When someone says the deal was x it does not mean it was agreed upon. The deal is not finalized until it is submitted to the league office.

The narrative around this is that Nico thought he needed to keep the negotiations secret, kept it tight on the Mavs side between him and Dumont, and relied on his friendship with Pelinka during the process. That the deal was being negotiated at Luka for AD + Knecht + 2 firsts and that Pelinka requested to speak with Luka's agent before proceeding with the trade and that Nico, fearful that Luka's agent would flip his **** over the deal, because it would cost his client $116m, backed off the extra assets, agreed with Pelinka it exposed the Lakers to additional risk without communication with the agent and accepted the lesser offer of AD + Christie + 1 pick.

That is not an absurd narrative, because the Lakers would have accepted the deal for AD + Knecht and 2 first round picks even without talking to Luka's agent, because they're not as dumb as Nico.

That's an interesting point. How strong is the NBA players union? Because Luka, his agent, and the union have every right to be very, very upset about this and wreak havoc

And everyone in Dallas loved Luka like a family member except Nico apparently. Luka could walk into any business or house in the area and be welcomed with open arms. In my lifetime, only the triplets and Dirk were this adored by the DFW sports community

It won't really cost him $116M. Just 116M in upfront guarantees.

He will probably sign a 2+1 max deal then sign his supermax in two years when he's eligible for the 35%. Bron and Kawhi did the same thing.

Swapping out a 24 year old for a 29 year old with all of the same stats.

I have no idea what the Mavs are doing anymore. It seems like they are definitely giving away their future for nothing in return.

and we desperately need guards....caleb plays more of a true 3...I'm sure he can play anything 2-4 and grimes can play 2/3, but I'm stumped on this one. Grimes looked far from reaching his ceiling. Gotta be setup for another move or salary dump, etc.

I guess it makes the player swap easy. Just tell them both to head to opposite locker rooms tonight in Philly.

Nico doesn't care. Dude knows he is done this year or next. He could be done in as little as 3 months if they miss the playoffs or fail in the first round. I expect him to give away the 2029 Lakers and 2031 Mavs picks before the deadline. That would be a very desirable pick at this point. Dude is going "all in" and doesn't give a ****.

I think the best case is the Mavs miss the play-in and get a Top 10 pick with a small chance at Flagg. Then next year sell off anyone with residual value and get a Top 5 pick. Get two good lottery picks (plus whatever other picks you can get for AD, PJ, etc...) before heading into a bleak nuclear winter from 2027-2030. Technically the 2027 pick is top 2 protected, so you could try to finish with the worst record and have at least have a 27% chance of keeping that one as well. Just bleak stuff all around.

Grimes and Martin seem to be the same player....what is Nico's angle with this trade in our "win now" era?

Martin has a lot more experience and was a pretty Stout performer in the playoffs in some of Miami's runs. Martin is also signed longer at a good number, but he's more expensive than Grimes right now by a good bit

Seriously? I am surprised you don't get it. Caleb Martin is older! He fits the timeline better! Championship window, buddy!

Nico has made it very clear he only cares about the next 2-3 years, which candidly is probably the correct mindset for a GM. Where Dallas is getting it very wrong is not having a superior, either a President, owner, etc. who's job it is to look out for the franchise as a whole.

The GM should have gone to that person to pitch the Luka trade and that person's job would have been to say "I hear you, but I can't support that because of the long term hard to the franchise, even if you think it's best for the next 3 years". If things did get untenable with Luka or he requested out, then that superior could have gone to the GM and said "shop Luka and get the best combination of players and picks available to stay competitive now and set up for the future".

There needs to be a balance of "experts" who's opinions and recommendations you rely on, but they need to be balanced between each other with a single person above them all whose job it is to weigh the varying expert opinions and ultimately decide what is best for the franchise as a whole which clearly isn't happening since ownership is letting Nico do whatever he wants long-term implications be damned.

Just to pile on, Caleb Martin is also hurt and out for at least another 3 weeks. So we are trading for an older and injured player.

Can't make this **** up. **** Nico. Fire him yesterday.

In reality, Nico shouldn't be with the team past the next 2-3 days. Someone needs to coordinate with Elon to have the first spaceship sent to the Sun with Nico and the Mavs owners as passengers of honor.

Or just have Elon overpay for the team. I trust him to fix anything rn, mostly

Has it been discussed what Mavs fans think the team will look like with AD? If AD stays healthy, pairing him with Kyrie/K. Thompson could be interesting?

I wouldn't want the trade but I feel like the Mavs have a really good shot this season

Lack of on ball creators is a problem. Teams have shown in a playoff series that Kyrie can be neutralized. You neutralize the ball, you neutralize a lot of the other weapons

Dallas is going to draw LA in the playoffs, and Luka will orchestrate a sweep by averaging 40/20/15.

The LeBRON/Luka tandem is definitely going to be interesting. The energy going into that match up is going to be super juicy
