I have watched a lot of professional sports over the years. I don't think I've ever been hurt over a trade or someone changing teams. This is a first. I know, HTFU and all that. But I really think I might be done. I'm not even all that mad. I'm just ambivalent towards this team in the same way I am the cowboys. And at this time last night, I would called myself a super fan. Wow.

Same. I'm 50. Lifetime hardcore Dallas sports fan. While I may have disagreed with some trades, I've always seen the logic. I just fail to see this one in any capacity. This is a gut punch to every Mavs fan. The new ownership let some closet homosexual GM who has been in the game for 3 years get carried away in his own ridiculous process and hubris

I listened to the A&M games with my dad in the late 70's, but my first NCAA memory was Magic vs Larry. They hit the league in '79, then the Mavs expansion team was in '80. 1979- '80 was also the greatest Aggies basketball team until Acie came along. So, yeah, the Mavs kinda started at the same time as the modern NBA, and at the very point when I started loving the game at both the pro and college level. So yeah, I didn't keep up when they were losing 70 games per season in the 90's, but I spent most of the 80's wishing they'd just get over on LA once, wondering if I'd ever get over the 2006 Finals and the 2007 implosion, not believing what I was seeing in 2011 (thank goodness, because the Rangers...still too soon). It's definitely a gut punch.

Even worse than it just being the fact that its the GD lakers is they sent him off with a huge chip on his shoulder to be in better shape with possibly the one person who could teach and motivate him to actually be more professional.

LeBron will be there just long enough to teach him how to play at a HoF level into his 40's.

Seriously. How any self respecting Texan could make such a terrible statement is inexcusable.

Whataburger is just way over-priced. Braum's is the best by far, then Culver's. In-n-Out is affordable. Whataburger combo is $12 or more. Ridiculous.

I don't think it's a grand gambling conspiracy. I think it's an ownership group that doesn't know basketball, doesn't have winning championships as a priority, and therefore put the basketball side of franchise completely in the hands of a guy who has been in the league for all of 3 years. A guy who got lost in analytics, angry about Luka's weight, and gradually talked himself into doing an insane deal while consulting only his buttbuddy who was going to be primary beneficiary of said deal

This is where I'm at. The telling comment to me was when he was bragging on how quiet the deal was kept by the Laker's GM. All that tells me is he is too stupid to understand that it was 100% in the Lakers organization's best interests to make sure this deal didn't leak and a bidding war break out. And what that tells me is the this guy was in a bubble all on his own and he did not really have an accurate perception of how the rest of the world would view this decision.

What are y'all's thoughts about moving forward as basketball fans? I can't really see myself sticking it out with the Mavs through this…I see a few possibilities personally.

A) follow Luka to LA and keep supporting him
B) switch up and support the Rockets…I was born in Houston, have family that are big Rockets fans, and I have never really viewed pro sports rivalries as real
C) just completely check out of the NBA

C feels like the most likely option and maybe I just passively pay attention to Luka and other guys I like.

I personally don't think I can stomach watching another Mavericks game for a very long time. I've already listed all my remaining tickets for sale and cancelled my membership for next season. I also told them I don't want playoff tickets (if they somehow sneak in as the 8th seed). At this point it isn't worth posting or thinking about this team beyond trying to process any final thoughts on why they just nuked their own franchise for no reason.

Looking at the outgoing pick situation you are basically an expansion team starting over at the 2031 draft. Maybe that is when I start to check by in. Who knows. Starting in 2027 the Mavs will now be handing premium picks to OKC, SA, CHA, and BKN/HOU because of sheer incompetence. That means (at best) you aren't going to be a playoff contender until maybe 2035. Will I care at that point after checking out for a decade? Who knows. As far as when they will be a championship contender that is impossible to say. Could be multiple decades. You need to have a top 5 player like Luka to be in that mix, that takes timing and luck since those players are very rare. Some other scattershot thoughts:

1. I hope the Mavs lose every game for the remainder of the year, miss the playoffs, this blows up in Nico's face, and he is fired by June. Maybe he doesn't care at this point.
2. I hope that Kyrie starts bringing up the all the weird movies he has most recently watched, causes drama, opts out and signs with LAL.
3. I hope Addelson/Dumont family moves the team to LV, and takes the name Mavericks with the outdated 90's blue logo / color scheme. Leave the green color scheme and Dirk statue for a future expansion team.
4. What gets me is even if Nico is a wizard and the Mavs somehow catch lightening in a bottle and win a championship (not going to happen, but humor the premise) - I just wouldn't care. This is a mercenary team with no tenured players. I don't care about these mother ****ers.
5. I would rather ride it out with Luka until the end with ultimately no championship than win one (again humor the premise) with this unlikable mercenary team. Not that Nico does analytics (clearly) but that is something a spreadsheet will never capture. Sports are entertainment ultimately, championships are icing on the cake. I've had fun following Luka's career trajectory over the last 6 years. No championship yet of course, but that is OK, I haven't regretted it. It is entertainment and I was entertained.
6. You just nuked the fandom of a generation of kids in DFW (4th largest media market). How many of these kids are going to be wearing Lakers Doncic jerseys by the end of this year? Hell, should I go get a Doncic Lakers shirt? The fact that it is the Lakers is a bridge too far, but I do wish Luka success.
7. I don't see how I can watch any NBA game at all at this point. All the rivalries that were building (PHX/Booker, OKC/SGA, Boston/Tatum, then in state rivals Wemby/SA on the upswing, Houston on the upswing) - I don't care about any of this anymore. You can't sports hate on other teams / players when you sports hate your own team more.

I can't support another team. I'm just not built that way. I've tried to randomly follow teams in the past, and it never sticks unless there's a connection to my youth.

I see myself becoming a casual and player follower going forward. I'll likely watch national games involving players I find interesting more often because I won't really care about what their success means for Dallas. Most of my consumption will probably be via highlights, though.

I will still watch the occasional mavericks game because I love the sport, but my days of chasing Bally's, League Pass and VPNs, and hanging antennas so I can pick up Chanel 27 are over.

When you're a fan, you wait your whole life for a player like Luka. And the NBA is chock full of guys that want the scene and demand trades and want to play on the coasts or whatever. To have that guy on your team and have him riding for your city and then just give him away... it's gutting. At least when a guy demands a trade, you get to make him a villain. You get to root for your guys to prove that guy wrong. Luka's not a villain; my own team is.

I don't understand it. This iteration of the Mavs brass just took 10 years of entertaining basketball away from the city and all the parents with little kids who were excited to grow up alongside Luka.

Definitely out on the Mavericks until ownership changes hands, if that ever happens. I could never root for another team unless I moved out of DFW, but I'd casually watch NBA games if it looks interesting. However, if anything more than just a suspicion comes out that Lebron, Nike, or the NBA front office had a hand in this, then I'm done with the NBA forever.

Yeah, what is lost in all of this is the unicorn factor with Luka. Unless you are the Lakers, it takes the stars aligning perfectly to land a guy like Luka. Or Dirk. 45 year old franchise and they've had 2. You owe it to doing everything you can to figure out the right championship approach that will work with that player. Instead Nico pulled the ripcord. Insane.

I do not see how I can continue to support them.

agreed, but I will also say this is so wholly egregious and unprecedented in its slap in the face to what has been an insanely loyal fanbase for all of the 21st century. Looking back at other "slaps" to fanbases like the Marlins, some of the NY Jets moves, etc....you can add all of those stories up and multiply by 1000 and you'd still fall way short of how much of a slap this is.

I'm still sick over it. And I probably sound like a ***** here and I'm sure after a bit more time I'll get over it, but this one really shook my sports fandom in general up. My wife and I have both had opportunities to relocate overseas for jobs and while it's been a very minor factor in our considerations of whether to move or not, watching sports has factored in. Ultimately, we've not made the move predominantly for larger factors like selling home and cars, family health, pets, etc. but as a gigantic sports fan, losing the ability to realistically keep up with my teams at least played a factor. I've thought about that a lot this weekend in respect to this Luka trade bs and it's made me self reflect as to why...why do we do this to ourselves. It's not all that different from the come to Jesus meetings we have with ourselves every Aggie football season where we ultimately buy into the hype, only to end the year with an 8-4 type record, but at least those occasions have mostly not been due to team self sabotage. If you lose on the field, you lose on the field. This is altogether different in being a huge **** you to the fans.

I know, I know....I'm a *****. I was a Luka stan. As much as he pissed me off with this whiny ref bs and thicc with 2 c's entry into each season, etc., he was still the continuation of Dirk, aka the greatest DFW sports hero of all time along with Staubach and Mike Modano, etc. As a *****, I legit teared up reading the Luka goodbye IG post yesterday. **** Nico. **** the Adelsons.

and the most insane thing of all is that our fear the moment that we saw that Luka was going to live up to the hype after drafting him, all our buttholes puckered at the fear of ultimately losing him to LA or NYC or Miami. So, Nico just proactively gives into our biggest fear and gives the guy away for peanuts?

I still am just so ****ing angry over it. You're telling me we couldn't have got AD, Christie and the 2029 first, and then asked for Reaves, another 1-2 firsts, a couple of seconds, Rui and Knecht? Houston has 1. (Elvin Hayes, Moses Malone, didn't play in Houston long enough. Calvin Murphy, McGrady, and Yao weren't good enough. Drexler, Harden not long enough.)

San Antonio has had 3 (Gervin, Robinson, Duncan), and is working on #4.

Top 50 players of all-time who stay with their main team for 10+ years are true unicorns. Magic, Bird, Kobe, DWade, Isiah, Patrick, Dirk, Dominique, Giannis - all of them only need their first name.

We had one, and we just tossed him away.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough
