I think they are just selling at the top of what they think he will be worth; Cucurella is turning 28 this summer. He's not going to be going up in value in all probability. They aren't getting quite what they paid back, but it's pretty close and even getting close looked very unlikely for a good while there.

Edit: And the point that this doesn't make them better is very true. But they've committed to this model where they have to sell players to recoup the fees so it is what it is. They can't really afford to keep an "asset" that will be depreciating rather than appreciating. Especially since they've overpaid. And the Mudryk transfer looks like it will be a near total loss even if they eventually get a little back.

The Garnacho move will be a total loss and I for one approve of that.

I don't think it will be a total loss, but I bet they have to loan him, either within BlueCo to Strasbourg or to a La Liga or Serie A team with an option or obligation to buy on performance metrics, first. And even then you aren't looking at 40M GBP; probably 25-30. (Not as bad as Mudryk because he wasn't as expensive and at least he isn't banned, but he looks worse than when he was a sub new from the Youth; he looked terrible every time I saw him last year).

They've paid 60m EUR for Van Hecke already. Assuming West Ham don't budge on their price very much, they'd have to fork over about 95m EUR to get Fernandes. And then another 80-90 EUR at minimum for Tonali. I'd be surprised if they can commit that kind of cash. Would be even more surprised if Fernandes was interested without a wage that paid him significantly more than other offers.

I think Tonali will be more expensive; Fernandes has youth and potential, but Tonali is in his prime and has had the better career. Everyone seems to be paying a premium for youth, though (I mean, we we kind of see that with Anthony Gordon going for 80M EUR but Barcelona not coughing up 30M for Rashford even though I believe Rashford had more goal involvements last year and certainly overall across his career, so go figure; Gordon is a few years younger even if he's not really that young now).

Yeah, I've seen the rumors on Twitter, but nothing concrete beyond pre-bid talk. That said, I think they probably will bid close enough to asking to get him. I really like him but… crazy price for a good year of performance.

According to Twitter, Onana has agreed a deal on his wages to go to the Turkish club he was at last year on another loan. A deal for a new loan with United hasn't been agreed, but… looking in my crystal ball, I don't see anyone likely showing up to buy him. Hopefully we can reach an obligation to buy at the end of the loan and just move on from this disaster. I think after next year there would be one year left on his contract.

Yeah he's the last one I can think of where you think, "Wow, can we sell him at any price?" where there aren't injury issues hindering a sale. I mean, Zirkzee and Ugarte probably need to go, too, but seem at least they are somewhat sellable at some price.

I would never underestimate Mourinho's ability to squeeze the attacking life out of any player.

In regards to Fernandes, if he goes to Spurs for something approaching 85m, there's no way to know if that's a loss for United until you see how he does and/or who they get instead. But I'm inclined to be ok with it. 85m seems like a lot for him. But we'll see just how good (or bad) our transfer plan is if United have to switch targets. They should have contingencies that they can immediately turn to without panic buying into some horrible backup option.

I mean, it's a lot of money for a midfielder. Who has gone for more? Wirtz (oops), Rice, Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Jude Bellingham, now Anderson… Pogba… Neymar depending if you want to count him as a midfielder or a forward… maybe one or two more that I'm forgetting?
