If the USA advance, is fifa going to keep a 2pm kick off time for the quarterfinal on Friday afternoon for the host country? Surely they'd move it to prime time? There are no other games that day.

The draw for the next WC is going to be screwy with 6 host countries, if they put them all in Pot 1. (Although that will be mitigated somewhat as Spain, Argentina, and quite possibly Portugal and Morocco would presumably be seeds on merit anyway.)

The US would be delighted to get drawn into a group with Paraguay as the "seeded" team.

Think we've gotta also include Uruguay in that group.

I don't think they consider it 6 host countries just 3 and Portugal and Spain are likely Pot 1 anyway and Morocco is up there too (higher than US, Mexico or Canada).

There are just some special games (one each) being played in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina for the 100th celebration.

Although if they expand to 64 teams and 16 Groups its a non issue as all but 1 of those would probabaly be in the top 16.

Round of 16:

SAT:
Canada (27) vs Morocco (11) in Houston
Paraguay (39) vs France (3) in Philly

SUN:
Brazil (5) vs Norway (29) in NJ
Mexico (15) vs England (4) in Mexico City

MON:
Portugal (6) vs. Spain (1) in Dallas
USA (14) vs Belgium (8) in Seattle

TUE:
Argentina (2) vs. Egypt (34) in Atlanta
Switzerland (17) vs Columbia (13) in Vancouver

Other than Spain/Portugal the top seeds have some lower seeded opponents.

My expectations/predictions/hopes:
Morocco over Canada - check
France over Paraguay - check
Brazil over Norway - miss
England in a PK shootout over Mexico - check but a straight up win
Spain over Portugal - check
USA over Belgium somehow -
Argentina over Egypt
Columbia in a PK shootout over Switzerland

Prime time in Europe. That's why. Sucks for us though.

Well I think that was a lot closer than most would have thought. Wow.

They beat Germany and hung in there with France. Does that bode well for us?

No they did not try and park the bus on the US and we scored early. They really had no chance once they needed to chase the US game.

Once we scored the 2nd that was when they tried to play more. Not a fan of people trying to rewrite history, we just played elite soccer for a half and stomped Paraguay.

France had many chances to score and do the same but didn't convert

I'm disappointed in general that they still have primarily day games from here on out. I'm sure time zones are a portion of that decision but sucks to have a semifinal in the middle of the week in the afternoon.

Well I'm lucky. Summer classes I'm teaching are online only with no meeting time and I don't have to show up in person or have office hours.

So daytime works great for me.

I've literally watched at least half of every game and all of about 2/3 of them.

So group play was 72 games in 18 days and Round of 32 was 16 games in 5 days. This feels so slow.

How far down the club rankings would you have to go before a national team would be better than a club team (let's assume the player can be cloned to be able to play on both teams)?

Where would the USMNT sit in the Premier League? Absolute bottom of the table or slightly above?

While I think a very few rare national teams would be competitive in a top league I don't think it's many. Like France, Spain and maybe Brazil. Cuz you also need depth. They might be good enough starting 11 but beyond that it drops off. So in any game they could compete. But over a season of 38 games they'd be lucky to make the top 10 of EPL, La Liga, Bundesliga, etc.

And USMNT would struggle to not get relegated from EPL.

On the other hand a top national team like those would dominate the MLS. So depends on the league. MLS is like the 10th best league.

Not having even the slightest idea what I'm talking about, I assumed France would rank around the 15th best club team in the world, and the US would be an upper-tier EFL Championship League team.

Assuming you're talking about taking these rosters and giving them a normal cycle ~6 weeks of training and warmup games before playing league games, the very best would be very good.

France is deep enough to be a real squad at the highest level and would be extremely elite. Consider CB, their starters play for Bayern Munich and Arsenal, and their backups are starters for Liverpool (and moving to Real Madrid) and Crystal Palace. And they're like that at every position. They have depth that makes them easily a top 10 club.

A more interesting case is say Argentina… great team among the favorites to win this World Cup, but a close look at the roster reveals gaps. MLS and Argentinian league players. Old guys who wouldn't last a full season. They can make waves in a summer tournament (where most teams lack identity and cohesiveness), but they'd struggle in a top league with that roster.

FIFA has cleared the way for U.S. men's national team forward Folarin Balogun to play in the USA's World Cup round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle on Monday, multiple sources confirmed to us Sunday. The news was first reported by The Athletic.

Balogun, who scored the game-winning goal in last week's round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, was shown a controversial red card later in the match, triggering an automatic one-game suspension.

But under FIFA's own protocols, the play should not have been flagged to Brazilian referee Raphael Claus by the video assistant, who asked Claus to review the play on the monitor following a slow-motion replay of the incident. Balogun was not even cautioned by Claus on the field.

While the U.S. Soccer Federation had no recourse to appeal the red card under FIFA rules, global soccer's governing body made the decision to allow Balogun to play in the Americans' next match.

Balogun leads the USA with three goals at this World Cup.

Looks like Belgium is super pissed off.

This is the right call given the BS call, the incorrect application of VAR, and the completely inconsistent application of rules.
