Been thinking about this one for a bit so apologies for the long post, but I think what Liverpool is going through right now is incredibly interesting, unique and frustrating, so here it goes.
I've listened to a lot of The Anfield Wrap this year to try and get a feel for what they think across the pond and how that aligns with my thoughts and beliefs, and I think we are pretty aligned at this point.
Yes, I think we have a legit personnel problem at a few places like LW and at CB (hello Konate). We've discussed ad nauseam that we are at minimum one really pacey, explosive forward short of being a complete group, and I could make a real argument we are two forwards short because they refuse to use Rio Ngumoha and Isak has been beyond limited this fall. Thus we've been left with at most four options week in and week out. Anyways, our press in particular is so poor because we just do not have the horses or energy to do it anymore, at least at necessary levels for today's day and age of soccer, and I think this has really caused issues down the team and lineup.
CB is pretty self explanatory; Konate has been heinous this year and cannot pass the ball well enough without more help around him. They effed up in a huge way not getting Guehi done before the final few days. If you're going to play in all of the competitions these days you need three legit CBs imo, and we have two and a half.
Going down the list a bit we absolutely struggle with what soccer has become being SO set piece and long ball heavy. It just is what it is. Slot hasn't been able to figure out a formation nor a starting 11 guys to properly deal with it.
But more than any of the above right now I think this season has become a gigantic emotional (or lack thereof) mess. Jota passing away, bringing in 400 million in new players, players out, no chemistry, championship hangover and the list goes on. And on top of it all is the fact that I don't think this group of players or club has an emotional leader anymore. Klopp, Jordan Henderson and Milner were it for so long, along with Bobby Firmino. After those guys left, it was still Klopp, but up came a new wave of emotional and energetic leaders like Jota (even thought he didn't play every game), Diaz, and even Darwin Nunez to an extent. And I know not all of those guys in the last group were world beaters or near as good as other guys on the team, but they brought LIFE and ENERGY to the team, whether on the pitch or off it.
And what is the common denominator between each of the people mentioned above...they are all gone. As good as Salah and VVD are, they are NOT emotional leaders on the pitch and I don't think off it, and they simply cannot bring the same physical energy that they could when they were younger. We damn sure don't get it from Slot. I think the only real players we get it from at all are Szbo and Robo, and surprisingly enough Chiesa when he comes on.
We absolutely crumbled after we gave up the first goal on Saturday, and have done so multiple times this season. This teams needs to turn their emotion in fight, into want to, into grit and I don't think we have that at manager or in the players right now. That is what I think is the biggest issue is at this moment.
