We were trying to help y'all out by taking players off the field.

Can Spurs score a winner when we play with 11? No. Okay, how about 10? Still no. Nine? Hmm, no. Okay I guess we'll go ahead and help them do that too.

Erroneous!

Exactly! Everyone knows that the only true conspiracy is that Manchester United get all the calls and favoritism from the league year after year.

It's so cute seeing the Spurs fans be so hopeful again. So cute.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

These VAR apologies don't mean ish. Imagine an incorrect VAR decision being the reason you get sent down.

I know it's every week… an apologies aren't enough for clubs like Sheffield that get sent down due to missing points via incorrect VAR decisions.

Lets be honest, I'm usually surprised when calls go against Manchester or Liverpool clubs. Something about refs growing up as fans

These are worthless facts though, especially by themselves.

How many of those decisions were actually questionable/debatable?

If a team has 10 clear-cut calls go their way but then drops one subjective call, the fact that the 10 went their way means nothing… congrats to VAR for doing their job. (I'm not saying that's the case with LFC, but hopefully it illustrates how dumb these stats are by themselves.)

If this was a case of some subjective red card or handball or whatever, then yeah, it might be a fun exercise to dig up how many of those kinds of calls for LFC's way… especially if the stats said something like 8/10 subjective VAR calls went LFC's way. A stat like that would mean something.

But even if the stat said that - it would be moot given what happened here. This particular case should upset everyone. It's a clear-cut black-and-white call and they completely botched it. These are the kinds of decisions that spawned VAR in the first place, because everyone in TV could see the truth and see that the refs got it wrong in live action. The fact that they can't get this sort of thing right should concern everyone who watches EPL - even if in the short term you're happy it came at the expense of LFC and/or for the benefit of Spurs.

The biased call discussion can be tabled for another time… the more concerning issue is if they can't get the clear cut situations correct - what good are they? Or worse - what if this isn't just human error but extremely egregious bias?

Here's the full audio of the VAR cluster from the Diaz goal review: https://www.premierleague.com/news/3718057?sf269410963=1

First thought is that things like this should happen more often due to their unintelligible English accents. Second thought is that they were in too much of rush to restart the game. Just by slowing down a second and calmly stating what the call on the field was from the beginning of the process would have saved everyone. Lastly, who cares if the game has been restarted, you know immediately you ****ed it up - stop the play, award the goal, and proceed with a kickoff like you should have.

But you cant. Law 5 is clear and unambiguous. You cannot change your decision one you restart play.

I will also say that there is a decent argument that they had maybe a second or two to halt the play and we do it all the time. Blue throws it in when its really red bal. Blue just threw it in and that means the ball is in play. We hit the whistle and stop play and fix the restart all the time. They had a very small window here that they could have cheated and fixed it. And I think they were trying to do it. But play went on way too long and they lost their chance.

How is it any different than a hand ball...play keeps going until play is stopped.

you HAVE to be able to stop things if VAR decision was wrong. Hopefully they'll change it and we wont see it again.

In handling or any potential foul/misconduct, the play is live until the referee blows the whistle and decides what to call. And they have until the restart of play to change their mind on any decision. Once the restart happens, there are no "do overs".

It literally says "the referee may not change a restart decision on realizing it is incorrect or on the advice of another match official once play has restarted." The moment Spurs played the IFK they were theoretically ****ed.

I think they had a second, maybe 2 where they could have gotten away with it, juts like we fix it when the wrong team throws it in. But its got to be really fast. And someone here tried to do that but it took too long.

And oh by the way If they try that and give the goal, I guarantee Spurs are going bonkers precisely because play had restarted.

Stopping play and Spurs upset is still better than not doing anything when goal was scored.
Everyday all day

And if Arsenal were involved they'd definitely be more upset than Spurs fans

Not giving the goal because you ruled it offside when it was on is an error in fact. Its a screwup.

Stopping play after a restart to change the restart (give a goal after you award an IFK and take that kick) is an error in Law and a protestable error. Its way worse.

Yet they still tried. Once the ball cycled around and went out of play on the far side for a throw in they were dead men walking.

It's pretty amazing that VAR has been around this long and they apparently don't have standardized language or communication procedures set-up. It's apparently just up to the crew to talk to each other however they feel is best. Surprising they haven't ****ed it up badly before now.
Dre_00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Pretty unambiguous that a player is onside if the player is even or in front of the final defender and goalie when the pass is played...and yet.

I get why they didn't stop the play but...if we're going to lessen the pressure on refs and make a virtually impossible job slightly more possible, we really need to come up with a way for refs to correct mistakes. And that includes VAR.

(Or just trash VAR because it's causing more problems than it's solving and at least do the other thing)
Hey...so.. um
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Instead of saying check completed, why don't they just say onside or offside. If they had said Onside there would have been no confusion. I'm not sure this is on the individual crew for this game as much as the process in general.
