Spain played like a team with a coach who's been in charge for a week who had no clue what buttons to press. The idea they could win after firing Lopetegui was insanity.
De Gea was abysmal this World Cup. The attacking was abysmal. Pace and possession was there but no creation of legit opportunities. Can't say we deserve to advance...

I picked Croatia to make the finals in a money pool. At least Spain losing increases the odds that happens. That whole side of the bracket feels open to me. Lots of relatively evenly matched teams left. Colombia, England, Croatia, Sweden, Switzerland... I think it's going to be one of them. I'd bet it's one of the first 3.

I had Belgium vs Croatia. But I could easily see Brazil getting there as well as Uruguay and France. That side of the bracket has the likely world cup winner in it.

Rankings were total bs with how they could be manipulated by not playing friendlies. When you host the World Cup that is all that you are playing. Anyone who thought Russia wouldn't go through to round of 16 wasn't paying attention. This win was surprising but Spain have been second most dysfunctional team behind Germany in this tournament. I just don't think Argentina were that good though they deserve to be in the conversation. Go Croatia!
I think Croatia is the one with the clearest path to the last 4. I think Brazil is the next most likely to advance, but Belgium has been playing very well. I like Uruguay over France, but just barely; I think that may be the best match we see. And I think the last spot is wide open, but England is likely the favorite to go through.

I'd like to see a good study of this. Historically goalies have been taught to guess is your only chance. But that of course means a kick straight on would work the most. Now also the kicker hesitations is a newer development that also changes things. What does the data say?

Not straight up guessing. Educated guess, maybe, based on where the kicker starts, the type of player he is, etc.

Well you are all 100x the soccer fans I am, but all I can say is when I tune in once every 4 years to watch some soccer seriously, I happily root against Spain and their agonizingly boring style. So happy they lost.
