Also wondering what type of performance from a freshman tops Boston Kellner's opening weekend.
Super series for Super Sorrell.
For his performance vs. Tennessee Tech, All-American outfielder Caden Sorrell has been named the Southeastern Conference’s Player of the Week.
In three games on Opening Weekend, the junior was 9-for-15 (.600) with three home runs and a team-best 10 RBIs as the Fightin’ Texas Aggies swept the Golden Eagles out of Blue Bell Park.
Of course, it’s early, but through one series, Sorrell is slashing .600/.625/.1.200 with an insane 1.825 OPS.
Perhaps his best single game was in the 15-6 Opening Night victory as he launched a pair of home runs to finish 3-for-6 with five RBIs.
“I don’t really like to ride the highs too much or the lows too much,” Sorrell said on Friday night. “Moving forward, like tomorrow, it’s a new day. Wake up at 6:30, get here at 7:30 for team meal, and, you know, go play a baseball game.”
Picking up where he left off, Sorrell gave A&M a 2-0 lead just seven pitches into Saturday’s 23-7 bludgeoning with another blast.
Later in that game, fellow Marcus High School products Wesley Jordan and Jake Duer also went deep to complete a rare trifecta.
All Sorrell did on Sunday was quietly go 4-for-5 with four singles and another RBI as the Ags completed the sweep via a 7-1 decision. In the finale, he also reminded the 12th Man of his defensive prowess with an insane diving catch to rob Luke Bragga of a base hit.
“He’s pretty good,” Aggie skipper Michael Earley said on Saturday. “When he gets the ball in the strike zone and swings, he does a really good job. As long as he doesn’t expand, his bat-to-ball is really good. His bat speed is good. He’s strong. He’s competitive.
“The most important thing about him is he thinks he’s really good, and he’s not wrong, and he feels like that all the time. He’s a really, really good player.”
It represents the second weekly honor of Sorrell’s Aggie career, along with being the SEC’s Freshman of the Week on April 29, 2024.
It was better than a “good” week for No. 13.
It was super.
