Ugh. ****ing Argentina. Make it through with absolutely mediocre football thus far.

Here's hoping France takes them out.
I don't get the Argentina hate. Did you grow up in Brazil or something?

This is never going to happen, but Mexico going through Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina, and Spain to win the World Cup would likely be the greatest run in WC history.

If y'all pull that off, they should give you a world cup trophy the size of the Eiffel Tower

Loser of England/Belgium gets a MUCH easier road to the Final. (Except for the RO16 game.)

Winner gets Japan, then winner of Brazil/Mexico.

I don't understand what this means. What happened in those 2 world cups that earned your hatred?

Apparently most Latin Americans have some disdain for Argentina...Argentines tend to have a superiority complex over the others. When I visited Bogota in 2006 I was able to watch Germany take out Argentina on a large screen in park with thousands of Colombians...nearly all were rooting for Germany.

They eliminated us twice. We don't like them. It's that simple.

It goes beyond that, Guille Franco and Gabriel Caballero taking two spots for the 2002 World Cup. Copa Libertadores, Copa America, Boca Juniors, Martin Palermo spating on Bofo Bautista when Chivas eliminated them.

Mexico at 16% seems crazy. I know we're a long shot, but come on. Even Japan was given 24%.

So the top seeds (Pots 1 and 2 from the draw) that did not make it are:

with ranking

1 Germany - 25 Sweden instead
6 Poland - 19 Denmark instead
10 Peru - 44 Japan instead

Not all that crazy to have 3 eliminated. Although Argentina, Columbia, and even Spain and Portugal had to grind it out in their last matches in their groups.

Damn one side of the bracket is loaded.

2 Brazil
3 Portugal
4 Argentina
5 Belgium
7 France
plus Uruguay, Mexico, Japan,

the other side has no Pot 1 teams except the host Russia

8 Spain
11 Switzerland
12 England
13 Columbia
18 Croatia
plus Denmark, Sweden, Russia

Happy about how things played out for Spain. Russia may be harder than it seems given the home advantage. Croatia worries me. I thought Croatia and Belgium were the best looking teams of the group stage.

I didn't know you were Mexican. I couldn't figure out what beef an American would have.

Born and raised. But honestly, doesn't everyone hate Argentina?

Honestly no.

And frankly it's hard not to be a fan of Messi. Freakishly good (genius level) at soccer, but humble at the same time. Fights his ass of for every goal and almost never dives. Doesn't chew out his teammates even though he has every reason to on occasion. Married to childhood sweetheart (who now happens to be smoking hot). I saw a video on Reddit after his last game where a reporter had given him a good luck trinket from his mom. The reporters asked Messi if he kept it or threw it away (like he expected). Messi not only kept it but was wearing it at that very moment and at both games since. He's just a decent down to Earth guy who happens to be in the running for GOAT. What's not to like about the guy?

Sure, Messi is fine.

"running for GOAT".
Messi may be awesome, but he is no Pele.
Pele carried Brazil to three World Cup titles and Santos to numerous national titles. After he "retired," he came to the US in the 70's and played three more years to record crowds. He was a great soccer ambassador to the US and gave US soccer a huge jumpstart.

Soccer in America owes a huge debt to Pele, considered by most as the greatest soccer player of all time.

I wasn't trying to turn this into a Messi vs anybody else thread. I'm sure that's been done 100 times.

I like France and Portugal but Deschamps is going to have to let his thoroughbreds run if France is ever going to get out of first gear.

yeah mine is more based on how lethargic Argentina has been but.... could go either way.

Argentina:
tied Iceland - their only point
got throttled by Croatia - ok Croatia looks good but they were DOA
beat Nigeria - but took a last minute goal to do it

France by comparison was also mundane but did enough to beat Aussie and a good and motivated Peru side before sleep walking through a don't care game after clinching against Denmark.
