Yep. The one at the mall was miles better than one in Waco I went to. I'm almost sure they had lunch-type specials at night back then. Maybe it was just cheap. Having access to unlimited chips and salsa helps!

I forgot to mention 3-C BBQ. It was on Texas next to the Discount Tire store. Apparently a non restaurant has taken over the building. Anyway, and I might have mentioned this before, but 3-C was an OK BBQ place but they sold a darn good hamburger. They put out coupons every week in the Bat and I would get 6 or 8 copies! I think the coupon was for a buck fifty, and that burger beat any fast food burger by a mile.

Flying Tomato had the best pizza I've ever tasted. Was really sad to see it go.

Also, Don Gaynor can burn for what he did to the owner of Cow Hop and forcing them out of Northgate.

I miss La Taquaria fajitas and queso, Cow Hop CFS Sandwich, the gas station across the road from Blocker that sold chinese food off a cart, and the fast food mexican joint on past Skaggs Alpha Beta toward Bryan that put refried beans into their Queso. I think it was called Pepe's. I also miss CFS night at the MSC.

Now I'm hungry and restaurants in Colorado Springs suck. Really the only thing I don't like up here.

Usual Northgate night for me (05-09):
  • Midnight Rodeo (later Daisy Dukes): grab a free wristband just in case there were people below 21 in the group that wanted to go there later (they charged guys a cover later in the night). Have 1 beer and then leave
  • Dry Bean: flaming Dr. Peppers and whatever else
  • Sake Bombs at the Asian Restaurant (they pushed all the tables against the wall at night)
  • Some combo of the Corner, Mad Hatters, the Chicken, the Library, O'bannon's, etc.
  • ALWAYS end the night at Antonio's

Then there were the spots you usually went to on a given night:
  • $1 margaritas at Ozona's on Mondays
  • O'bannon's on Tuesday nights for teas and karaoke
  • The Tap

My favorite times were the random days/nights:
  • Have a Fitz's favorite and some pitchers on a random rainy week night when no one else is out
  • Go out on a random weeknight or during the summer so that you can stay at the counter in Dry Bean as long as you want and get great service everywhere else
  • Post up at an apartment pool with a cooler, freeze your ass off in the gas station walk-in freezer when you go to get more beer in nothing but a wet bathing suit, and then grab some trash can nachos from Zapato's to finish off the day

My favorite food spot was probably Fitzwilly's. Went there multiple times per week, had lunch after graduation, and did a day trip from San Antonio with a friend when we heard they were closing. Drove there, had 2 burgers and fries, and drove straight back. Then there were the usuals: Layne's, Chicken Oil, Koppe Bridge, and a million others that have already been mentioned on here.

I remember Mr. Loupot was still driving himself around in some big old heavy car (probably a maroon cadillac) way longer than he probably should have been. He got in a minor accident right by his store on University, and I just remember hundred of students crowded around him gently screaming "Poor Mr. Loupot" as they helped him out of the car and got him settled.

Best fajitas ever!

That was back when fajitas were just becoming a thing and outside skirt was available. Now its mostly inside skirt.

Appreciate the walk down memory lane! I heard Chicken Oil moved its location (down College Ave) and haven't been to Martin's Place BarBQ in like 2+ decades. Looks like I'm heading back to Aggieland/ College Station to eat in the not-so-distant future!

That said, I don't dig all of the chains moving in. There is one place I truly miss, and that is the Texas Hall of Fame. I'm extremely surprised nobody has tried to run a decent dance hall since they shut down unexpectedly. Harry's is OK during the week and on weekends with no live music, but standing only during the bigger shows. I'm wondering how long they will be there before a developer decides another skyrise would look good where it's at.

Anything else has a dance floor too small to do any actual dancing, and the drugstore cowboys with lace on their back pockets think it's cool to stand 10+ feet out onto the dance floor, effectively reducing the size of the already small floor to microscopic. Then they proceed to get mad when you bump into them....

It was nice having a place with enough floor space to dance during a live music show.

The Hall was always one of my favorites. Even better when they added shadow boxes the year before I left - made people watching that much more entertaining at times.

The block parties in the duplexes across 2818 from the Hall were epic as well. Too bad the BCS party patrol eventually killed that as well.

One of my favorite memories is calling burger boy at 1130 and talking to the guy that didn't talk good English and ordering for about 10. Then the delivery guy showed up in a Mercedes Benz. We worked on Turk road. All of us laborers would say damn we have the wrong occupation. Great times!

Nipa-Hot.

We used to walk over from the Chem bldg. and eat lunch there 2-3x a week. Hot & Spicy Noodles 3... 4 if you were feeling adventurous.

One day my buddy Joe was feeling salty and the little old lady took his order and asked "how many star?" and Joe looks up at her with a ****-eating grin and says "hurt me." She kind of raised one eyebrow and said, "Ok, you funeral."

When the peppers hit the wok behind that shower curtain that separated the kitchen from the dining room all of our eyes started to sting.

Joe did not finish his noodles that day.

Cenare's closed earlier this year? That used to be about the only nice place to go for any kind of fancy dinner. I don't remember any other place in the late '80s that fit the bill for graduations, etc. Sad to see, but surprised it was still there....

I know them all! I think I had a couple beers at flying tomato the night before my ATM med school interview. Ended up doing a field sobriety test after dealing with my buddies messing with the CD player. Passed the test and the interview. Went to med school at ATM.
