Did anyone else lose money on the 24 Hours gym IRS shut down circa 1989?

They were selling memberships right up until the day the IRS locked the doors.

86-89. Nothing beat the Tomato pizza-wise. The best deep dish Chicago-style. La Taq and the Cow Hop were great lunch spots also. Fajita Ritas. The Deluxe. Damn you guys are killing me! One of my favorite places was this run down tiny little place on Wellborn between Holleman and Jersey (will NEVER get around to calling it GBush on a regular basis!).....a little Chinese takeout place where you'd walk in, never spend any more than $3 and walk out with a plate of the best damn Chinese food in town. That place has been gone forever I know.....anyone else remember that one?

And it's pretty damn hard to beat a Freddy Burger at the Chicken......

Nothing beat the night they had bunch of girls model underwear and "sleepwear" at the mater! For some reason the fire department was turning people away at the door. Circa 86...

Burrito night at Mom's was the best (think that was on Wednesday night)

You could get your fill at Mom's...Was there 1-2 times per week.

Is the house still there?

Don't remember what size I ordered, but I was never able to finish anything there, nor would I want to see the person who could.

Northgate cafe....

In 1994 pitchers 1.75, until 9, 2.75 after.
From what I hear they were not terribly concerned about validating your age, which was probably nice for those under 21.

A few more places that may not have been the best, but definitely the best bang for your buck:

Beetle's BBQ by the Bryan Muni - BBQ buffet

Big Daddy's - all you can eat catfish and BBQ chicken; in Bryan, didn't last very long

Leaning Tower Pizza (or was it the Leaning Tower Special at another pizza joint?) - had a special in the coupon book for a large with a 2-liter for $5

Quarter draft Thursdays at Wings N More on Texas (Simpsons night)

And you couldn't beat 85 cent long-necks at Alfred T. Hornbacks

The Texan in Bryan?

Not your every day kind of place, esp. for a college student. But the couple of times we ate there, it was great.

and was a freshman when D&D opened up. They started w/ any coin, any drink for the first week or so...then quickly changed the rules!

Graham's used to have 10 cent Thursday's during the summer from 4-6. We'd roll in with 10 dimes a piece and proceed to get drunk. Good times...

The original Wild and Wooly Wednesday at Dave's was a thing of greatness. You could fast all day and gorge yourself on a rolls and pizza and all the beer you could drink. I think the original cost was $7.49 or something like that
(87'-88'), I remember it going up to just under $9.00. Then the laws passed where there was no more "all you can drink" specials. That did in a world of good deals in BCS.

I almost forgot about the Hastings record store that would have a keg with free beer on Fridays, no purchase necessary.

Around 1991 or 1992, the Tap would have summer specials of $1 dozen boiled shrimp for HH. And if you tipped well, your second "dozen" was about 20 scrumps.

You mean the Hastings in that old dump of a mall in Bryan that was "the mall" until the mid 80's?

Also:

Big Dogz in Bryan. Circa 1996. Girls boxing on Tuesday nights. Don't think I ever saw another student... Yeah.

Quarter pitcher night. Someone told us that Bucky R had a share in the place, so about 20 of us wandered out there and found they didn't seem to be interested in ID's. I think my arrival back on campus hours later was a minor miracle.

I'd bet he was talking about Hasting's in Culpepper Plaza. They still serve beer in that location. It's now P.O.E.T.S.

The Bryan Hasting's is in the Tejas Center, the much nicer redo of what was once Manor East Mall.

I remember, bro. That nice little Chinese lady was always there. Roommate and I would eat there once per week and just gorge.

I drive past that building every weekend going to home games and get a lump in my throat. It's like a Goodwill store now.

I remember attending many a mixer at the Q-Huts. Only place associated with the University that you could have a mixer and serve liquor.

Swensons, Great burgers AND ice cream.

The Creamery when it was on campus near the Pavilion and the library.

The constant turnover of clubs where The Tap is. One week it would be Lipstick, the next it was The Polo Club. I came back from Spring Break to find it was a gay bar. Went on down the row to The Zephyr Club followed up by Archie's 39 cent Burgers.

Something that just popped in my mind that New Army is missing out on ... Bonfire Buddies.

Memory may not be serving me, but .....

Cowpie and fries were $1.35 in 1979 including all the "extra" toppings used to build a giant salad. Remember the radio commercial: "Moooooo, dong."

Peanut Gallery - $3 cover, 25 cent drinks on Thursdays

Hardly any chain restaurants besides fast food (Monterrey House is all I can remember)

Sonny's in Bryan - $1.25 pitchers on Tu/Th - mostly a locals place near Chicken Oil

Mom's - $2 boardinghouse meal

Free crackers (dinner) at the Dixie Chicken

The Texan - old diner turned into nicest place in town

35 cent Texas Pride at the Chicken

House of Tires / House of Boots - "I'd give 'em away, but my wife won't let me."

The Baron - WTAW

Some retail store gave a 1% discount for every point the Ags won by. After the 58 - 0 Memphis State game, they were cleaned out.

Randy's Liquor Store - all my check were made out to Randy's or TAMU. My Mom asked "Who's this Randy guy?"

Archie's 39 cent hamburgers...was over by the Tap at the other end of the shopping center.

Great for when the Tap closed and you just had change in your pocket!
