best chicken fried steak i had was at longhorn tavern.

crooked path was awesome..the staff hated the boss (probably why they closed) and we would drink on our tips alone...me and the future wife would get blasted on about 20 bucks a night watching live music....and we drank alot.

Carneys was a place that never got mentioned cuz it was a frat hangout, but for a while it was the only place that had good beer on tap....ive got good memories there...even dunked my ring there....the only place in town that had lone star on tap when i was in school(chicken only had lone star light..now they dont have ****)....i needed to dunk the ring in lonestar or pearl, and it got done.
Carneys is still there and I still go there every trip to Aggieland... even started taking the kids - '17. & '20 - when they were young and they made and make it a place to go as students.

Even worked there for about a month until Joe Carney told me to go back to being a customer..

Back then lots of smoke and it was always packed.... At one point Joe sold the most Shiner Bock - when it was THE ONLY decent beer you could drink and way before craft brews - of any single establishment second only to Stubbs in Austin in the late 80's.

Kids these days dont know a good bar or they would be at Carneys.

In my day, we were lucky to walk over to Northgate for a burger or a tamale, and we liked it!

I used to drive delivery for Fatburger in 97-98. Before I worked there I used to order from them all the time. afterwards? yeah never.

Mo (Mohammad) the owner cut corners on food safety like you wouldn't believe. all the meat was bought from local grocery stores when it was on sale. like the day before it went bad. the salad bar was gross. every morning we had to pick the roaches out of the hot peppers. lettuce garnish was washed and reused. the grease in the fryers was never changed when i was there. solidified grease was piled up in the corners of the kitchen so much that they looked smooth. I asked on of the old hands how they ever passed a food inspection and was told "Mo bribes them"

plus some guys once tried to rob me on a delivery (not that that was Mo's fault)

such a wonderful time working there
Do you mean this Fat Burger?
It was next to A+ Tutoring, and on the other side was Albertson's and behind McDonalds.
1997-98 was around the last time I ate there. Liked the Philly Cheese Steaks.

Not sure why, restaurants certainly come and go. Their pricing was low and food was huge. Not very big and there are very few tables but you went through the serving line to get your food. As for when, I left there in December 1988 and I'm pretty sure they'd already been closed down before I left, I could be wrong, though, but if it was open after then it wasn't for long. We came to football games ever since the mid-80s from Houston until I moved here in 2006 and don't remember it even in the early 90s, but then again we were kind a coming in and out to the games are not going to Northgate that often.

I went there mostly my freshman year which would been 1984-1985 when I lived on north side dorms.

Moved off-campus my sophomore year so I wasn't as much in walking distance of it but still at the Northgate a lot but was usually going to go out to the chicken. That's a good question though. To this day I'm not sure I've ever had a better burger though.

I went to A&M mid to late 90s, and it was a legend even back then though no one around had actually eaten there. Then folks on this board talked about it, so I was wondering.

There was this place called Kettle on Univ Dr with endless coffee at night. Wonder if it is still there.

I always think these threads are funny. Once you graduate, just one year after, nobody cares about the places you once loved. Your experience in College Station is your own, and the dynamic is always changing. Hardly anybody knows what the P-tar is anymore, and it's actually still there.

That said, I don't dig all of the chains moving in. There is one place I truly miss, and that is the Texas Hall of Fame. I'm extremely surprised nobody has tried to run a decent dance hall since they shut down unexpectedly. Harry's is OK during the week and on weekends with no live music, but standing only during the bigger shows. I'm wondering how long they will be there before a developer decides another skyrise would look good where it's at.

Anything else has a dance floor too small to do any actual dancing, and the drugstore cowboys with lace on their back pockets think it's cool to stand 10+ feet out onto the dance floor, effectively reducing the size of the already small floor to microscopic. Then they proceed to get mad when you bump into them....

It was nice having a place with enough floor space to dance during a live music show.

University has changed wildly over the years. Kettle is located on Texas and Southwest Parkway and has been since before 2006. I ate there exactly once in the last 10 years.

Denny's was more my speed. Free wifi (before everyone had free wifi), NOT McDonalds, quiet setting, and food when you wanted it. Sometimes all I ordered was coffee or a soda and they let me sit and study for hours on end, every time.

It's called "nostalgia". Most people enjoy the reminiscing, it's unfortunate that you do not.

They key was to stand near the restroom. You didn't want to be the FIRST one in, but definitely in the next 5-10.

They really weren't bad were they. Especially for $.39.

That subway that's right behind we're Archies used to be, that is still there. I used to walk to a lot from the University Oaks Apartments that are still right behind them. Although I think their condos now.

I also used to love to order from potato shack because they would deliver. Not sure if it was located where the one is now on Welborn but they used to deliver and I'm remember writing checks for like $5.69.

I loved Mama's Pizza. It had the best crust, almost like garlic bread. I, like many of you, miss The Cowhop. I also remember the Dillard's. It was pretty much the only large store at the mall. This was '80 to '84.

They moved from Northgate to in front of Albertson's in the early 90's. I worked there my senior year in 94. They closed down in 95 of 96 I think.
