A lot of the history of college station businesses is at the link below. Very interesting, should check it out. In particular, go to the "index" which lists a lot of blog posts about specific places or areas of town.

That link reminded me of my time as a cocktail waitress at Mansard House in the Doux Chene apartments. Was paid ten cents a drink + tips (deducting the bartender's share.) It was am upscale restaurant that then had disco dancing after the dinner hour. The waitresses wore Danskin spaghetti strapped leotards with wrap skirts, hose, high-heeled metallic shoes.

When I hear "Doux Chene Apartments" these days I think of low-rent drug dealer housing.

It was "Country Club Apartment Living" in the 70's. Although, I do have to say my boss was a lech. Wanted to take me to Las Vegas with him. He had kids older than I was. I declined, obviously.

Taco Bell on business 6 had the famous reverse drive through where they served you on the passenger side of the car.

The Springco McDonald's franchise across from Zilker was recognized at one point as either having the highest sales nationally or internationally of a single store I think in the early 80s. They rebuilt the original store at that location at some point.

By the 80s it was most famous for its paneling which of course dated to the 70s. I joked with residents that it stood for "two horses." Made the same joke about "Dos Equis."

I was a bartender at Mansard House (became Studio 2818)...learned how to do the Tom Cruise twirl and juggle during 4-for-1 happy hour. Gary Sebek was the owner and pretty leechy!

It was the "Dallas" club my one semester of living in the DC apartments. Place was a crap hole but I didn't care since I lived within easy stumbling distance. Very convenient after all those Friday happy hour long island iced teas.

I used to drive delivery for Fatburger in 97-98. Before I worked there I used to order from them all the time. afterwards? yeah never.

Mo (Mohammad) the owner cut corners on food safety like you wouldn't believe. all the meat was bought from local grocery stores when it was on sale. like the day before it went bad. the salad bar was gross. every morning we had to pick the roaches out of the hot peppers. lettuce garnish was washed and reused. the grease in the fryers was never changed when i was there. solidified grease was piled up in the corners of the kitchen so much that they looked smooth. I asked on of the old hands how they ever passed a food inspection and was told "Mo bribes them"

plus some guys once tried to rob me on a delivery (not that that was Mo's fault)

such a wonderful time working there

I was a waitress the summer of 1978. But I thought his name was Harry and last name was "See----something or other" but I have conveniently forgotten most of the details of my time there. There were several old lechs that patronized the place. I would be "tipped" $20 to go to the machine and buy a 50 cent pack of cigarettes for a guy, for instance.

Since I worked the late shift, I was usually escorted to my car by one of the bartenders because there were times that men were waiting outside for me and the other girls to leave. At 2:30 in the morning in a dark parking lot and coming down those stairs essentially blind to who was waiting behind the stairs, it didn't take me long to understand how vulnerable I was. Always held my car keys in my fist with the keys spread out between my fingers. I was gonna leave a mark and maybe take out someone's eye, at least.

I remember sitting through a TABC certification class one day and this super hot blonde chick kept freaking out and getting defensive about Gary anytime Hurricane Harry's was brought up as an example. After she left and I asked someone else what that was about, a couple other guys just laughed and said, "Ol Gary's got himself another one. Must be the start of the new semester." And this was in 98.

Where exactly was JD Wells? I remember people talking about it, but not sure I ever made it or if it was even still open when I was in school.

JD Wells was in the Tap shopping center off Harvey.. I was in school until '94. Not sure how long it stuck around. The last I remember it was a coffee hangout.

My wife started working out at a new place a little over a year ago, she was explaining where it was and I finally realized it is in the former JDWells. I had to at least stop in and see what remained...

"Mom's" in Bryan.

I'm going leave it at that and see who else might know where I'm talking about. On a tight budget, the Cow Hop and Mom's were at the top of the rotation.

I believe Wed nights were All u can eat beef enchilada nights.... Mom's was a classic.... My dad, '62, ate there during his run in Aggieland. It was great food that laid you out until the next day.

Reading back thru this thread if it was not mentioned, i was going to mention it.

What about Los Nortenos??... Only good, true tex-mex from mid to late 80's.

Was Roxys close to the Kinkos by the Albertsons down from Northgate? They had nickle Red Stripe night in 86-87... That did not help.

And, has anyone mentioned Wild n Wooley Wednesdays at Double Daves..... $5 all rolls you could eat (or haul out of there in a backpack) and all the Shiner Bock you could drink.... Damn that hurt as well!

86-89. Nothing beat the Tomato pizza-wise. The best deep dish Chicago-style. La Taq and the Cow Hop were great lunch spots also. Fajita Ritas. The Deluxe. Damn you guys are killing me! One of my favorite places was this run down tiny little place on Wellborn between Holleman and Jersey (will NEVER get around to calling it GBush on a regular basis!).....a little Chinese takeout place where you'd walk in, never spend any more than $3 and walk out with a plate of the best damn Chinese food in town. That place has been gone forever I know.....anyone else remember that one?

And it's pretty damn hard to beat a Freddy Burger at the Chicken......
Amen brother... That was great chinese food.....cant rember the name.
