i've not heard much good about them. never tried them myself, but a guy i know (and use to work with) bought a pair. he ran in them a couple times and hated them. said it was a waste of $180.

if you decide to try them out, let me know what you think.

they do "work" though. they force you to forefoot strike.

From what I have heard/read you have to get 50-100 miles in on them before they start to feel right. Will let everyone know if I try em out.

>>i actually need to find a place b/c i gotta pick up some glycerin 5s. we're already sold out and the 6 infuriates me.<<

Zappos has the 5 still (don't know about sizes), but what do you not like about the 6? Just the color scheme? That's what I'll probably get since they discontinued the Epiphany. I have and like the 4 pretty well. In fact, its held up better than any shoe I've ever had. I'm a big Brooks fan, though they'd have someone that would pray daily toward their HQ location if they made the Glycerin in black.

>>They are wide, and short (9.5ish), but my heel is super narrow.<<

soup: your foot sounds pretty much like mine except my heel may not be as narrow. What shoes are you struggling with?

The shoes are the Asics Gel Nimbus 9. I love the shoes. They fit great everywhere BUT my heel, which falls out every time I walk. I tried everything. New insoles. Lacing it 00's way. You name it. No dice. Heel still slips out.

I am going to try the Sauconys. I need a new pair of Frees as well.

I think I may get the Garmin 305, too. I really want to track my distance/speed so I can watch it improve.

I can't wait to be able to start running again. This broken foot is killing me.

if money isn't an option, go for the Garmin 405 ($299). its the size of a regular watch.

they narrowed the toe box and my big toe rubs on the side of the shoe. i'll get blisters if i tried to do any sort of distance in them. i even tried to size up an extra .5 size.

I really don't care about size. I don't wear a watch and wouldn't wear the 405 as a watch. It would be a running only deal.

The 305 has bicycle mode as well as running mode. The 405 does now.

I bought the Sauconys. I will give a report later.

i only wear a watch when running too, but its nice to not have a VCR on your wrist.

Come to think of it, I did find my Asics (long since retired to old "wear around" shoes a little loose in the heel. It didn't bother me, though. Have you tried the Brooks?

recommendations for a good/helpful shoe store in Houston? I'm going to need one with a knowledgeable staff.

Luke's Locker on West Grey in River Oaks.

I love my Sauconys, BTW. Didn't run in them, but wore them around. Huge difference.

found a fleet feet up here in north idaho, headed up there tomorrow! i have pretty wide and fairly flat feet, which usually results in me walking out of the mall with whatever shoe my foot will fit inside. the last pair i bought was a pair of Nike Reax, which fit the bill of my last sentence. these pretty much killed my feet to run in, basically i thought my foot was bending backwards after a mile or two. im really looking forward to getting fitted, since even after fully reading this thread i have no clue what shoes i need to be looking at.

Found a Fleet Feet here in Huntsville, AL and ended up switching from Asics 2120s to Saucony Progrid Guide. I have a narrow heal but my toes were cramped in the 2120s. I have not run in the Guides yet, but walking around in them feels so much better. I just wish the white/blue color was not so girly!

Any advice for replacing the sock liner in running shoes? Do you recommend it? At what point in the shoes life should one consider replacing the sock liner, if at all? Any particular brands you'd recommend? Thanks.
AggieOO

sock liner? are you referring to the insole?
kmets79
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes the insole. Any advice in that regard?
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i never replace mine. the shock absorption is built into the sole, not the insole. the one that comes with the shoe is there for comfort. if you want more comfort, i guess you can replace it. but don't mistake that feeling of comfort as thinking your shoes will last longer b/c the shoe will still break down at the same rate.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good running store in DFW? Preferably closer to Arlington or Grapevine, but I'd be willing to drive a little ways as well...

Run On is pretty good. They have a North Irving store that might work for you http://www.runontexas.com/stores/Irving.htm

I go to their Mockingbird store for all my shoes.

Thanks Scriffer...I'll check them out...

On the other hand, how much should I expect to dish out for some running shoes? I doubt I'll need anything top of the line, since I'll only be running a few miles 3x a week.

Thanks!

you are looking at between 85-120 (MSRP) for most running shoes.

tamuaggie07- Luke's Locker is in Carrolton I believe. I've heard lots of good things about them.

Aggie00, do you know anything about the New Balance 817s?

I got fitted for a pair this weekend, and I'm going to give them their first real trial tomorrow. Just wondering if you knew anything else about them, etc.

Is it normal/okay for new running shoes to rub and blister a little bit? Does the whole "breaking in" excuse still apply?

I had my first run in my Motion Control NB 817's this morning and the arch area is a little tender. Is it possible that my foot isn't used to having a more "rigid" support there?

Hi all,

I am going to start walking and working my way into running and I wanted a recommendation on some shoes. I did the water test on the link at the beginning and I have the first footprint (normal arches with about half showing). I am very overweight and I have rather wide feet. Let me know if you need any more info for recommendations. Also, I live in Lubbock so I don't know what the selection is like around here. TIA.

jwnichols, congrats on making a commitment to getting in better shape and welcome to the board. My guess is that most people on here are going to tell you to go to an actual running store and get fitted by a professional. It would be better to get what feels good rather than just go off a blind recommendation by someone off TexAgs.

That being said, hopefully someone on here can point you to a good running store in Lubbock.

Good luck!

Thanks 2007. I agree that the best bet I think would be to go to a running store. I hope you are right about someone pointing one out in Lubbock, but I have not been able to find one.

no. you might eventually get use to it, but if you are blistering, those are not the shoes for you.

Still no luck finding a running store in Lubbock, and thus I still don't know what shoes to buy.
