I guess when I mean support, my feet just don't feel good when I am traversing across the different types of terrain. They get sore while I am walking/jogging. Also, my hamstrings get tight too even though I do stretch them out a bit before I head out.
And no, I've never been fitted for shoes as I just started this back in January and am now committed. I used to lift for exercise but my serious shoulder impingement prevents me from lifting anymore.
Suggestions on what I should do? Thanks.

a lot of your problem could be due to the sole fact that your shoes aren't really made for running and are super old. a trail shoe will provide more "support" in that it'll help keep your foot from rolling around or hopefully from rolling an ankle.

outside of that, without knowing your gait, its really tough to make a recommendation.

ccard - i'm also a big fan of the shoes i'm in now. The Montrail Rockridge. It feels similar to what the cascadia use to feel like until this most recent version.

they also have some stability shoes if you feel like you need a medial post.

thanks i'll take a look at those as well. I had a pair of montrail trail runners about 5 years ago but only used them for backpacking. have you run in the most recent cascadia? I stumbled across a review this morning that said they felt more like the old ones.

i've not tried them, but I'm eager to. I talked to my contacts at brooks guys at The Running Event in december about the new shoe and they told me it should feel much more like the old ones, which i LOVE.

I tried to search on here for a thread regarding insoles, but came up dry.

What are the thoughts on insoles? Are particular brands better? Lynco & RunPro are the two brands I've seen around. I know ShoeDaze in College Station sales Lynco.

I've had hip issues recently when running. I got new stability shoes (brooks adrenaline), and the pain has lessened, but not gone away completely. The shoe guy thought an insole might help me, but I didn't have the money for one at the time. Would an insole really help me for the money they cost? about $40-$60 a pop.

tough to say. you'd need to put those inserts into a shoe and then have your gait checked to see if they are doing anything for you.

Found it.

After going to a few running stores the past few years, 2 of them recommended neutral shoes (mizuno wave rider 13s) and the other recommended a stability shoe ( nike zoom structure triax 13).

I liked them both, and didn't have any noticeable foot pain in either one. Although I liked the mizunos because they felt lighter And much cooler on my feet (more important now that I am in Houston). Now my shoes are all worn out and I'm finally going to get back into it again.

Any suggestions for someone who has had good luck with two different types of shoes?

honestly, one of the people making a recommendation was wrong. My guess would be it was the odd man out (triax guy), but it is possible that the other two got it wrong. i'd get fit again.

there are people who can run in anything and have no issues...maybe you are one or maybe you just weren't running enough to notice a difference.

Figured this could use a bump...also have a question:

Are there any stores y'all recommend for sizing in Houston over Luke's Locker? I haven't had very much luck there, felt rushed and am still getting some pretty bad blisters on my feet.

can't help with stores in houston, but for blisters...i'd take a look at your socks. shoes can cause them, but its usually socks.

Any specific info on socks? I do have running socks, asics, balega, brooks....

I am typically a heavy sweater. Though I don't know if that's the issue, as I haven't been sweating that much the last 3 months with the cooler weather, well until the last couple weeks.

Swiftwick socks have been good for me on long runs.
