Which RunTex in Austin would be best to go get tested for running shoes? Are they all the same or is one bigger or better for this than the others?

Go to the Riverside store. It's the main store and will have the best selection. The next one I would go to is the one on Lake Austin Blvd. Stay away from the one up north at the Gateway Center. They don't have a very good selection and aren't as helpful.

AggieOO - can you recommend a trail shoe for me that is similar to the NB767? I am bored at work so I have plenty of time to surf around

how technical of a trail shoe are you looking for?

the 767 AW isn't really that technical, but its as close as you can get since its the same shoe.

I just want something that will drain water and hold up on the trail. I am not going to be setting any speed records out there but I will be doing a couple off road dus and running on the trail 1-2 times a week.

how much do you overpronate? I'm assuming not too much since the 767 is a pretty moderate stability shoe.

i can't say enough good things about the Brooks Cascadia but its a neutral shoe. It seems to have a little mild correction in it. I couldn't believe how well it drains. Unfortunately, many trail shoes try to keep water out (which is more difficult) rather than draining water.

If you can go somewhere that can do a gait analysis, I'd say to check out the cascadias and see if you are overpronating in it.

I'll see what else I can dig up. We don't carry too many trail shoes since there aren't many trails in manhattan.

I've got a couple pair of Solomon, but I've never run in them b/c they are stability shoes and they'd kill my feet.

Thanks. I don't think I overpronate too much. I can run in Nike Frees for shorter distances (even did a couple 10k's in them without issue). I think I will hit up the local running shop and see what they have for me. Thanks for the direction.

Aggie00-

Years ago I started getting a lot of pain in my shins and IT band when I ran and saw a podiatrist and then a chiropractor. The diagnosis ended with me in orthodics (collapsed arch). Since then my running has been pain free. Do you know of a way I can excercise or stengthen the foot to get our of the orthodics?

I am running in Nike Volmero +2 (sp?) right now and they feel great. I was in asics 2120s, but they didn't feel as good as the Nike. Do you have any suggestions on other shoes I should try? If it makes a difference, I am 6'5 and weigh 220, but not out of shape.

assuming your orthotics are doing the job of correcting the overpronation, you just need to make sure you are in neutral shoe. the stability/motion control shoes have a similar purpose as your orthotics, so you need to stay away from them because the problem is already fixed. if you put a correctly working orthotic into a stability shoe, it can push you to the outside of your foot which can cause problems.

the vomero is a pretty cushioned shoe, so if you are looking for something similar (as far as cushioning goes) you can look at the Asics Nimbus or the Saucony Triumph.

the different brands are all shaped slightly different, so it'll also depend a bit on the shape of your foot as to what works better.

refer to the original post to see shapes and the cushion or firmness of the neutral shoes i'm familiar with.

if you have further questions, let me know.

Thank you, guitarsoup.

So here is my question (don't know if it is my shoe or my foot that is the problem):

I have been running in Kayanos for about 1.5 years. I am on my 4th pair (model 13 or whatever). When my 3rd pair was getting old (model 12, I suppose) my left foot started hurting on the left side just under my toes. It felt like it was rolling into the rest of my foot (?).

I thought this might be because my shoes were getting old but I am still having this problem with my new pair.

Should I try another pair of shoes or do you think my foot is the culprit?

i was going to say it could be the change between the 12 and the 13, but if it started with the previous pair that's unlikely. its possible that whatever injury this is started with the old pair b/c the shoe was old and hasn't healed yet, which is causing the pain in the new shoe.

people come in complaining of shin splints all the time:

"I bought new shoes and my shin splints still hurt."

"did you take time off for them to heal"

"no. i bought new shoes. why do i need to take time off?"

just b/c the shoe is new doesn't mean the injury is gone. If you get a new car b/c you wrecked your old one, that doesn't mean the leg you broke during the accident is now healed.

here's a list of shoes that have updated or are updating soon. There's some info on what changed in the shoe. Take the "them" (the company) info with a grain of salt b/c the shoe company will always say that the shoe is the best ever. The "us" is what people who work for the store think of the change. The date is the ship date, which may be before you will be able to find it for you locally b/c we get a lot of stuff earlier than many stores.

color update could mean there are actually new colors or that our store is just carrying new colors for us.

ADS Supernova Cushion 12/1 Them: widened last to make it fit broader range of people. Us: could feel difference in fit. Feels soft and nice.

ASC 2130 1/1 Them: solyte tweaked so more durable, less mushy, flex grooves tweaked, extended vamp to improve heel fit Us: not much different.

ASC 3000 1/1 $115 price point stability shoe. Them: between 2130 and Kayano. Has technology in forefoot to control lage stage pronation. Us: skeptical if it will work, but Amy really liked the way it felt “better than a kayano.”

ASC Attack 1/1 New colors, midsole.

ASC Cumulus 1/1 Color updates

ASC DS Trainer 13 1/1 Them: Same midsole tooling as 12. Changed fit of upper. Asymmetrical lacing to follow down first metatarsal, the way foot is shaped. Us: “felt exactly the same.”

ASC Kayano 14 1/1 Them: PU plate on top of gel, Articulated heel “bringing kinsei technology down to other shoes” Us: our overpronater looked better in 14 than she did in the 13. “Felt nice to run in”

ASC Nimbus 1/1 Color updates

BKS Adrenaline 8 1/1 Them: same midsole design, new upper, tweaked fitNow available in 4E. Us: Controlled Pav just as well as Adren 7, felt softer in forefoot.
BKS Cascadia 1/1 Them: New upper, only tweaked midsole.Us: Didn’t feel much different.

BKS Glycerin 1/1 Price goes to $120.Them: Not much different. Snugged up fit.Us: Didn’t feel very different, nicer transition maybe, liked fit better.

MIZ Creation,MIZ InspireMIZ Nirvana 1/5 Them: same midsole, new upper. “Dynamotion” to prevent heel buckle, designed to flex with foot. Us: didn’t notice big changes on any of them. “Dynamotion” seems like big gimmick.

MIZ Elixir 1/5 Them: new midsole and upper. Lower profile (like Precision) and made shoe on curvier last for a higher arched, quicker paced runner. Returning the shoe to its racing past. Aggressive graphics. Us: feels totally different. Faster.

MIZ Rider 12/5 Them: same midsole, just a new upper. Upper supposedly designed to prevent buckling around ankle during transition. “Dynamotion.” Arch a bit more aggressive.

NBS 1062 1/8 Them: didn’t change much Us: didn’t feel very different, a bit roomier in forefoot. Toe-off a bit less drastic than old version. Not impressed by cosmetics.

NBS 768 12/8 Them: tweaked it Us: upper feels stiff, blocky like the old 766, cushioning is softer, Amy found that the heel slipped and the transition wasn’t nice. The colors were very boring.

NBS 908 12/1 Them: updates 907. Trail shoe with a post. Us: looks good, broaden the selection a bit on trail shoes to include a posted option.

NIK Cesium 1/1 Them: changed lacing so now centered, now available for women Us: didn’t get a chance to try it on treadmill.

NIK Triax 1/1 Them: medial post is segmented to be more flexible, prevent foot “slap. Forefoot more sleek. Us: didn’t get a chance to try it on.

SCY Hurricane 1/25 Them: changed midsole, fit. Us: Still very similar, soft, felt nice running, but didn’t “feel stable”.

Other updates/new things on the horizon:
February:
- Brooks Infiniti: also a $115 stability shoe.
March:
- New Balance 903 (lightweight shoe, update to 901, 902 series)
- New Balance 874 (cool looking trail shoe)
- Zoot tri shoe
April
- new Vomero
- Asics Bandito racing flat
- Brooks Defyance (neutral shoe on Adrenaline last)

Aggie00, I have a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS 5 (yes, I know they're old). They're a men's size 9 and I'm loooking at the women's Adrenaline GTS 7 on ebay and I'm not sure if I would need a 10 or 10.5. I'm not sure if you'd know the answer, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I was fitted for these at Fleet Feet a while back in men's...do you think I'll have any problem switching to the women's shoes?

Many thanks!!
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
its usually a size and a half difference between men's and women's, but that's no guarantee.

the women's shoe will be narrower than the men's. other that that, they should be pretty much the same as far as construction.

FYI...The Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7's are on sale at Finish Line. i picked up a pair (men's) at Memorial City Mall for about $64 (with tax).

I've actually ordered shoes on eBay before with success. Most are shoes that just never got sold and are sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

OO,

Got an opinion on these? They're cheap and on sale and I have an extra 20% off coupon for REI outlet burning a hole in my pocket. I don't buy running shoes, but I do enjoy day hiking. I've got some full rise Merrell hiking boots already, so I thought these might be something good for shuffling around in the desert and such. Thoughts? Thangyew.

i'll be the first to admit that once you leave the running shoe world my opinion isn't that great. i've gotta get some hiking boots soon, so i'll start researching.

i'd say for kicking around, they'd probably be fine. especially for the price. solomon is a good brand...i've got a couple of pairs of solomon trail shoes.

I liked my Gel Nimbus 9s. I just have too much heel slippage (I have fairly wide feet and very narrow heels.) I even went a half size smaller than the Lukes Locker people said.

Any suggestions on other shoes that may fit me?

OK, shoe experts. What is a good shoe for plyometric training with lots of hops and leaps? Would any running shoe that I like work (my Asics) or is there a different shoe that might work better? There would also be some short sprints involved but I dont plan on buying new spikes so I want something that can do both jobs.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
soup - have you tried the lacing trick with the nimbus 9s where you feed the laces back through the last hole to create a loop and then feed the laces through the loop. it essentially cinches the top of the shoe and helps minimize slippage. if you have tried it, that description will make sense. if not, that probably made absolutely no sense. lmk if you haven't and i can try and find a picture or something.

Yeah, I did that (that was your initial advice a long time ago.) It slips less, but still slips.

My feet are strange. I think cause I broke my growth plates in MS. They are wide, and short (9.5ish), but my heel is super narrow.

I have this problem with most shoes. It really sucks in dress shoes.
AggieOO
How long do you want to ignore this user?
have you ever tried on saucony?

they are V shaped...the heel is more narrow and the shoe widens as it progresses to the toe box.

Has anyone heard anything good/bad about Newtons?
http://www.newtonrunning.com/

They are pretty pricy but I have heard a lot of positive buzz about them on a few different podcasts and blogs.

I was kind of thinking about trying them out after my marathon in April.
