I don't even really mean to defend my position, because honestly I see the other side too.
But I feel like context is relevant background. When all the floods flushed everything into the big lake (Fayette), we got overrun for weeks. Like crazy over run. They shut the big lake down to visitors for several days due to the volume of them. Some of our ponds you'd go out there and there'd be 5 on the surface every time.
So we sort of made a game out of "thinning the population", and the excitement of it did get the kiddos more into shooting than they had been. Probably do have something to "unteach", but I feel it was more positive than negative.
