12f Mane, seeing the beheaded great plains rat snake from a couple of days ago reminded me of some game camera video clips I have of several gprs catching bats exiting a cave in Williamson county. Interesting behavior to watch. I too lazy to figure out how to post them to Texags but I do have them on my Facebook page if you (or anyone else) want to see them. There are several clips taken over a couple of months last summer so you'll have to scroll back to Sept. 2015 & beyond to watch them.
I have not placed any cameras in the cave this summer but the snakes are probably there doing there thing as usual.
I generally keep a low profile & don't do social media so you can find me under my alias, Bassariscus Astutus. I never post anything other than game camera clips on my page. Just not into Facebooking in the "normal" sense. Just have it to share clips with friends or whoever wants to see unique game cam video clips. In fact, currently the first clip that pops up is of a great blue heron killing a ribbon snake at a spring on my place.
I initially thought Bassariscus Astutus would be a very unusual name that no one else would use but I was mistaken. Some guy in Mexico also uses that name but my user picture is a coachwhip with a bunch of bats exiting a cave as my background.

Close. Both are yellow-bellied water snakes.

Very cool. I use FB in a similar way. I'll definitely look for your videos. Seeing the bats and snakes and Bracken Cave was one of the better natural experience of my life so far.

The top pic eating the frog isn't a rat???

Negative, it's a blotched/yellow bellied water snake.

Like this, but with a darker background color:

Damn! And I thought I was getting a handle on this. The large dark brown patches on the back made me think rat.

I was looking at your Facebook page and came across a video from April 10th of a "black panther". Surely this a joke or was it really a panther? Great videos by the way!

Hillcoag, of course it was "tongue-in-cheek". The black panther reference was just playing off the infamous never-been-documented black panther stories we all hear regularly on the OB as well as in the real world. I hear them regularly anytime the conversation gets to "big" cats. I just have feral cats that are black (& other color as well) show up in my cams. If you noticed, there's one of a mix breed of the "white panther" that Ursus mentioned from Cass county some months ago. I claimed it to be the "love child" of a black & white panthers of Texas It's all in fun.
If you noticed, I also have a video clip of a chupacabra in the mix.
Trust me, if I get clips of ANY native cat other than a bobcat, it's not going to show up on any form of social media. I'll share it privately with some that I trust & know cats for documentation but nothing remotely related to a public forum. I don't want all the villagers to storm my place with torches and pitchforks.

The bat-snake video is one of the coolest game camera videos I have seen.

Thanks for the clarification. I've heard a handful of stories over the years from people claiming to see a black panther. Each individual was very adamant that they saw one. Any idea what it could've been? They've all claimed it was MUCH bigger than a feral cat and it moved just like a cat so it couldn't have a been a black lab.

And they are proven wrong every single time... just like on this thread with snakes.

If you're not sure of what something is, most people assume it's the worst (water moccasin/copperhead/rattler) to rationalize their fear.

That is exactly what I keyed on. All the water snakes I've seen have been basically black, never seen them with such dramatic markings

That particular species is mostly black in the eastern half of the state (the yellow-bellied subspecies) and has a pretty well defined pattern in the western half of the state (the blotched subspecies).

I started following The Reptile Report on Facebook. It's pretty awesome. This hognose video cracked me up.

It used to be called "The Mexican", but that was insensitive. Just because something is brown, doesn't make it a Mexican. So they changed its name to "Texas Brown".

That actually sounds like a great racehorse name. Well both do, actually. And The Mexican takes a lead over Texas Brown by a length as they round the last turn.............

Well let's not bring the PC crap to OB. I'm only referring to that snake as The Mexican

What do we got? This is what I would've just lumped in as a garter snake but I don't think that's right. Pretty snake though.

I will have to see if my brother still has the video somewhere but about 6 or 7 years ago he and a buddy were wading flooded areas of Lake Ray Bob, catching crappie in the flooded shrubs. He feels a tug on his stringer and turns to see a water moccasin trying to rip a fish off of it. He was in neoprene waders and the snake didn't seem to give a crap about him being there so he took out his phone and recorded it. The video is in a strange format that gave us fits trying to play it on anything.other than the phone.
