I just want to say thank you to this thread.

I was riding a bike taking my kids home from school in my well-to-do, little to do with nature subdivision of Cypress and saw a yellow bellied water snake in the storm bayou. Everyone said it was a Moccasin. I calmly said, " See the black edge vertical lines on the edge of its mouth, On top of that, look at the round eye without a line through it. Also, he is swimming below the water. That is definitely not a Moccasin" Everyone stopped the kill it with fire mentality and just watched. I sounded like I was on dual survivor for 2 seasons.

I knew nothing about snakes before this thread other than kill Mr. No-shoulders .

It's a dog bowl covered with a piece of clear plastic to keep him in.

I'm glad to report that mr rat snake is still keeping the rodent population of Kaufman County under control

If you haven't already, can you please describe differences of these two snakes? I seem to miss this ID a lot.
Perhaps post some pics of color variations in TX?? I'm with Lex, if I couldn't see its belly, I'd have assumed cottonmouth too.

You can't really see the head well in this picture, but water moccasins have a face stripe that I'm sure someone can go into more detail on than I can remember. Another thing is body shape - moccasins seem to be really fat and then dramatically taper down to their tail. This snake doesn't have that body shape - it very slowly tapers to a point.

Is that right, guys? Have I learned stuff?!
