Grass snake pic....zoom in and look lower right. Looks like a head. Turtle, maybe snake. Then go up at about 11 o'clock and there appears to be a reptilian color pattern in the grass. Might have been more there than you thought.

12fmane,

You hear of timbers all the way down around Hallettsville? Guy was showing me pictures of one today and I thought that was pretty far south and west for their range. I have no reason to doubt him I was just curious.

12f, same question about timbers. We have a place in dime box and have friends in Caldwell that see them every now and then but we have never seen one. Just curious.

We've seen a few this year near Sheridan on a job site.

The old timers around our place just north of Victoria say there are Timber Rattlers in small numbers out in that area. Dewitt County. I trust them.

That's nearly where it was. Just south of Sheridan on a gas processing facility.

We might know some of the same folks.

All of the live oak/post oak dominated areas will have them (Dime Box, Hallettsville, Edna, Victoria. They aren't particularly common in any of those place but are present, especially around water. I've seen a few from those areas including two on Coleto Creek in Victoria. I think the San Antonio River is as far SW as they go and Ottine/Lost Pines is getting to the edge of their western range that far north.

I'll play. Took this picture on Fayette County Lake back in the spring of 2014.

They were all up in the tree hanging out above the water as well. I flipped around the bush a few times then got out of there. The whole bush gave me the hee-bee-jee-bees.

What kind of snake is this? Thinking chicken snake but not 100% sure. Caught in my parents house.

Looks like a (very) juvenile rat snake.

And this is now a Sunchaser "How Many" thread, thanks to RO519.

My coworker found this snake under his dishwasher this morning. He had to capture it and take it outside, where it met its untimely demise. I can't see the head but I'm guessing a hognose. Thoughts?

Yep. Sure looks like hognose.

Why capture and then take it outside to kill it? If he had the composure to capture it, why not just let it go?

Just curious.

I'm not sure. Probably a combination of (1) a terrified wife because it had gotten in the house, and (2) a general lack of knowledge of types of snakes. A lot of people don't know how to tell whether a snake is venomous and are unaware of the potential benefits of having certain snakes around.

Completely understand and not trying to attack you're friend. I'm just a little surprised the snake made it out of the house alive and the kitchen wasn't burned down. Most people can't make it that far.

In my opinion this isn't a great thing to pass on to the next generation. Doesn't really instill any respect for wildlife and serves no management purpose.

I would almost always agree with this statement. But it's like killing roaches, mice, and rats - These broad-banded water snakes are just that, along with yellow bellies they don't really occupy unique niches and they typically have a crap attitude.

But they aren't household pests or nuisance animals. There is no arguable reason to kill them for target practice.

Very arguable that they are a nuisance, as most things are.

Definitely not a pest though.
