I don't even really mean to defend my position, because honestly I see the other side too.

But I feel like context is relevant background. When all the floods flushed everything into the big lake (Fayette), we got overrun for weeks. Like crazy over run. They shut the big lake down to visitors for several days due to the volume of them. Some of our ponds you'd go out there and there'd be 5 on the surface every time.

So we sort of made a game out of "thinning the population", and the excitement of it did get the kiddos more into shooting than they had been. Probably do have something to "unteach", but I feel it was more positive than negative.

I'm pretty much in the "let them live category". Unless they are hanging around where I or my family live or work. This snake in the grass was under a water tower that I use for my garden. I was disconnecting a hose about 2 feet from it when I heard the rattle. It still took me a minute to find him. Darn good camouflage. Measured about 33 inches.

And the photos are rotated 90 degrees left, I can't seem to fix that.

See him?

Very few feral hogs on top of the caprock yet, thank goodness. I won't comment on the urban legend.

And for ruddyduck, it didn't bother me as much as it probably should have. It was a cool day, so maybe he was sluggish. But I unhooked the (2 inch) hose on one side of him. then went to the other side to pull the hose up and put it on the rack on the trailer. As I drug the hose by him, he rattled. "Hmmmm. Dragging that hose through the grass saounded like a rattle.....maybe it was a rattle.."

So I shook some stuff around to get him to rattle again. Finally spotted him. Made me mad that I didn't see the little jerk. I'd been hooking up the trailer, running the gas-powered water pump, etc....

My dad use to tell me about an indigo in Harlingen that he described as his arch nemesis. He would chase that quick ******* around the yard then the son of a ***** would chase him for a while. I believe the snake outlasted my parents ownership of the property

Hadn't heard of indigos until a couple months ago ok this thread. Now I'm fascinated with them. They are badasses of the snake world.

Dad was out with my 5 year old nephew filling feeders. Nephew tells dad "this limb hit me". Dad jumps down and sees a rattlesnake, shoots him and throws my nephew onto the hood of the car. Snakes fangs had penetrated the tips of the tennis shoe, through the rubber, and there are 2 perfect circles of venom on the socks. Socks have been framed.

Texas Indigo? That sounds like they are a native snake. I was told that they were imported to Texas because they were a natural predator of rattle snakes. I think they went as far as to say it was the King Ranch that imported them.

Is that just a legend?

I've heard stories about pretty substantial importing of Florida indigos to south Texas in the first half of the 20th century but I don't know how true that is. Some people even claim genetic influence in certain areas.

When I was about 14 years old, I was hunting on some family land between Kingsville and Falfurrias. The property was basically farm land but it bordered the King Ranch so I was sitting under a mesquite tree close to the fence line hoping something would jump the fence. I sat there all morning and never saw anything. When I got up to walk home, I looked behind me and there was a 6 foot blue indigo sitting about 3 feet behind me. It scared the **** out of me even though by the time I saw it, the threat was over. I couldn't help myself though. I felt like I had to do something so I shouldered my 25-06 and fired a shot at it from about 10 feet away. I missed it but he never moved. At some point I figured that I should cut my losses and just left him there alive to scare the **** out of me again.
