And properly compensated for doing so. Carrot and stick approach.

I agree, if the public want a reliable grid, they're going to have to pay for it. This includes protecting against a once in 20 year occurrence.

From Bluebonnect Electric:

At 7 p.m., for the third time in 90 minutes, ERCOT increased the amount of energy utilities are required to shed via statewide rotating outages. Each utility is assigned prorated share of the overall statewide requirement. Expect mandatory rotating outages tonight and tomorrow.

Looks like they've actually got load shedding in the plan, as the forecast demand is down over the next hour.

I would give anything for 15 on and 15 off. Hell, I'd gladly take 5 minutes every hour. We've been out since 5:30 AM. Getting damn cold in here, even with a fire going.

ERCOT is going to say plants should do more weatherization. Well they said the same thing in 2011. Didn't seem to do much good.

It's going to take more than a simple best practices request after a voluntary audit. We've seen this time and time again, the industry will not do this on their own. The must be forced through regulation.

They don't have the money because of the draconian regulations from an EPA that designated CO2 a pollutant. Having to spend a bunch of money mitigating CO2 took money from needed maintenance, as did the diversion of money to fantasy wind.

um when was the last time that the entire state was in a winter warning? When was the last time that the entire state. The coldest on record temp ever recorded in Austin was -2 in 1949. They will get close with this storm.

20 year storm my ass. This is a 100 year storm. I think you learn from it and set up catches so failures don't happen again. However, if you are wanting infrastructure Ike they have in Montana or Michigan or Canada, where this weather is normal, that is just wasteful government spending.

But then again, I guess I should acknowledge who I am speaking to currently.

I got a bunch of firewood and filled my truck up with gas. Can always go sit in the truck with the heater going.

Oh I am not saying heads shouldn't roll for this. However, if people are wanting government to spend money to protect against something that they have shown they can't prepare for when they know in advance, why would people want them to build/do anything to prevent it from happening in the future?

It's government. They can't do anything correctly.

Edit for spelling with fat fingers

1989, 2011 and now 2021. That is three times in a little over 30 years by my math, not once in a century. But considering the ERCOT system was actually designed in deregulation to have shortages once every ten years, you can say it is working perfectly. I wouldn't say it, but you can.

Good for you, my question relates to the industry that generates and transmits power. Lives and significant property will be lost because of this predictable event that they were not ready for.

Don't rely on these fools in emergencies. Have your own stuff. Generator, propane heater etc etc
