Born in 80. Saw Jedi in the theater with my dad. Saw the prequels with my teenage/college friends, they were just okay. Read all the Star Wars books out there in junior high and high school.

Let my kids watch the OT endlessly between 4-6 years old. Let them watch TFA at home when they were 6 and 4. Took them both to the theater to see TLJ and ROS.

I didn't set any expectations and loved watching the new movies with my kids. The experience mattered. The together time mattered.

I was upset after TLJ with what happened with Luke...I am not as upset after multiple watches of it and what JJ did to undo the wrongs in ROS

Star Wars is a big part of my entertainment life and I love the movies, regardless of how good or average or bad they may be. Some of you are just critical a-holes who set expectations that no movie can live up to. Enjoy the ride.

How come Palpatine's son (Rey's father) wasn't some badass force user that stirred sheet up in the SW universe?
palpy probably killed him after he had a child to eliminate a potential threat.

I'm new to this (my 15 year old son is the Star Wars fan) but after seeing the movie with him yesterday, I had the same question about Rey's family.

According to my son, Anakin didn't have a father (and reading online, his mother became pregnant "by the force"). Why wouldn't/couldn't Rey have been born the same?

There were things that Palpatine said at the end of the movie that made me think he could have been the one who "created" Anakin, too.

Edited: I guess in TROS, they did say Palpatine had a son who denounced him. Palpatine eventually found the son and his wife and killed them but not before they hid Rey away. I understood the latter but not that Rey's father was Rey's actual father/Palpatine's son.

I liked the movie, but this was a very confusing plot point.

Saw it again tonight, liked it better the second time. I noticed when Leia handed Rey Luke's lightsaber, it had weld/repair marks in it.

Surely the Palpatine scenes were a little frightening for young kids.

Finn spazzed out/yelled a little less.

Got completely silent theater when Han showed up. I tried, somehow successfully, to make sure no one could hear me choking up. People think it's goofy to take movies so seriously but he and the OGs represent memories I still have of my friends and I playing SW, watching/talking it, riding the Star Tours ride 6 consecutive times at Disney World in 1991, picking up my brother from school and driving like Ricky Bobby's dad to see the SE A New Hope, etc, etc, etc. THAT'S why Rian Johnson gets hate from me.

My son watched the movie yesterday and he thought it was better than The Phantom Menace, but that's not exactly high praise. He's obviously not a Star Wars nostalgia-naut, though, and was hoping for something new and instead it was just a rehash of characters and storylines already covered. He did really like The Last Jedi since it took a left turn when everyone was expecting a right turn and that's also why The Last Jedi is my favorite of the recent three main movies in this franchise. I saw the very first one in the theater when it was released so I should be in the nostalgia-naut camp, but the original trilogy isn't really among my favorites by any stretch. If I go back the the '70s for science fiction my favorite is Alien and that was a theater experience that really made an impression. My personal opinion is this set of three would have been better served without any of the old characters, but I'm pretty sure I'm in a very small minority there., Thank god we didn't get any Thrawn, though.

Yeah that's the thing about SW. Some franchises are meant to grow with you. I thought the Harry Potter series did that for a lot of us late millennial kids (early 90s). Star Wars - at least, when it comes to the Skywalker saga - isn't. It's supposed to take you back and give you that same rush of joy you had as a kid when you watched your first SW movie. Hell me and a friend skipped school and hopped on the bus to go to the movies and catch Revenge of the Sith when it came out. I still remember the thrill and excitement I had from beginning to end with that movie.

Rian Johnson didn't get that. He had no idea how to evoke it and I'm pretty sure he had no idea what that felt like, or what it feels like to be a Wars fan. I'm completely open to them trying something new with a post Skywalker series or a Old Republic saga. That's relatively uncharted territory. But the Skywalker saga was never supposed to be about subverting expectations.

Alien is by far the best movie of its type ever made. My dad took me to see it at a no-longer-in-existence theater in Sugar Land, TX, in the summer of '79. The building was not in particularly good shape at that time. After the critter swooped down on the Brett character and took him away, I went to the restroom - I have never peed so fast as I did then, what with the big gaping hole in the ceiling of that restroom. Alien scared the living crap out of me. Had nightmares about that f-ing creature for the next couple years. Even now, I still wake up after having some dream with the creature, think WTF? and go back to sleep. So, thanks Dad ...

But dad also took me to see Star Wars in that same theater. I never considered Star Wars to be a purely science fiction movie - it was a fantasy with elements of science fiction, much like Alien was a science fiction movie with elements of horror in it. Star Wars made a huge impression on me. Junior high for me was pretty much a living hell, as I was caustically referred to as "Mr. Star Wars" due to my ever-present fascination with everything Star Wars; believe it or not, Star Wars was not always an "in" thing, although I very likely was way too obvious in my love for that movie. The years between Jedi and TPM were long but not without thoughts about what a prequel trilogy might look like. I then had the pleasure of taking my own kids to see the prequels, and with my youngest, the sequel trilogy films.

Saw this again yesterday. Still liked it for the most part. Focused less on the plot holes and more on the characters themselves.

Reinforced my thoughts the first time around that Kylo Ren was by far the most interesting character in this trilogy. Luke might have been up there had they done something with him in the second film that didn't make him look like a dumbass. It took until near the very end of TRoS to make me care a little bit about Rey. By the end of it I liked her a lot.

Pretty much everyone else was boring and failed to develop a connection with the audience. Poe I guess was supposed to be the hotshot sarcastic guy but everything fell completely flat.

I'm still trying to figure out the point of Finn in the series. Was his job really to follow Rey around and yell out "REYYYY!!!" every time she got in a fight or went sailboating by herself or went on a walk through the woods or went to take a dump without his supervision? That's pretty much all he did. He provided some first order intel but didn't really end up having much of a character arc during the trilogy. He was just...there to do some fighting stuff. He had an inordinate amount of lines.

They completely blew off Rose several times. Made me laugh. "Hey Rose, we're about to leave and spend the next hour of the movie doing stuff, why don't you stay here and get some intel on these new ships. We will get back to you later for a couple lines and leave you again. Okay thanks bye."

The handling of Leia's character was the best they could do under the circumstances. Unfortunately they had to go with the film they already had and clearly were building lines around old takes for different scenes.

Carrie Russell's character was completely pointless. I guess she was there to give Poe her captain's medallion so they could somehow fly up into a star destroyer on the same ship they had been using all along that had been followed and designated as a rebel ship so that no one on the star destroyer would know was the ship they had been chasing the entire time or something like that.

I wish Luke was in the film more.

Lando was pointless. Still nice to see him though.

Lando magically conjured up a million rebel ships. Would have been nice to expand on why those others felt compelled to fight now as opposed to before when they were ok with the first order killing Leia and the others. But there simply wasn't enough time as that should have been addressed in TLJ as to why no one showed up. The Mandalorian does a much better job at showing why the empire should be feared without relegating to yet another planet destroying weapon.

That was one of the most irksome almost "Deus ex Machina" moments --- when you watch you realize that he shows up with GREATER force -- the Sith massed fleet is as nothing -- they had the power to wipe out the First Order after they decimated the Alliance capital in TFA all along. And speaking of the First Order, as far as can tell its just Kylo's own ship that is there--all the others are Sith Final Order ships. What of the rest of the new guys? Though what we saw answers that question: they will be so easy to wipe out with such Resistance numbers you wonder why there was a menace in the first place.

I thought the resistance armada was still inferior to the Sith fleet - it looked like a bunch of personal barges and small freighters rather than a full fledged navy

I don't want to shut down discussion on a discussion board, but I think this is one of those movies that gets worse the more you think about it.

Unfortunately there won't be another Star Wars movie to think about for quite a while.

Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed JJ's approach to Rose after being force-fed her sour demeanor in TLJ. Quite satisfying. "Here Rose, you go stand over here for the duration of the film"

So I scanned through most of the thread. I think it comes down to the fact that, as entertaining as these movies can be, they aren't magic.

Luke, Leia, Obi-wan, Han, Vader. That was magic. We saw those characters in TFA and people cheered! When they died, people cried. That won't happen in 40 years with Rey, Po and Finn.

The kicker is that I just don't see how it was ever possible to replicate that. Star Wars (not A New Hope, but just Star Wars) was something 10 year old me had never seen before. And then Empire was just awesome. We didn't even notice that they recycled the Death Star and introduced a "bigger bad" we'd never met before. Then had teddy bears be bad ass fighters.

Kids today though have seen this - Star Wars itself, Marvel, Harry Potter. There is no way this was going to be that breath-taking regardless of over arching story, director, writer, Rose, whatever.

If you don't expect magic, this was an entertaining movie that gave one of my favorite bad guys a swan song, allowed me to say goodbye to my childhood infatuation; and wrapped the story and nine-plus movies and shows pretty neatly all things considered.

Oh yes, it has large gaps of logic and substance that the more you dwell on them, the more they can disturb. Just trying to see it as some kind of plausible send-off of the old storyline (especially and while absolutely transposing in my mind Darth Plagueis for Palpatine where can enjoy the irony that Palp's progreny helped bring down the Sith without a family tie to the villain and where the nature of the villain's setup makes more thematic sense)

So much lost due to haste--- not just having to ret-conn TLJ's shipwreck. But haste in setting up the script, linking the events, and above all -- on screen. The great moments of ANH-ROTS are easily recalled sequences long enough you can picture them in your mind.

So I watched endgame on my flight today.

I have seen it about 3 times before this and still liked it.

Am I wrong in comparing the conclusion of the MCU Thanos-arc to Star Wars? If so, then I'll shut up after this post, but in the comparison, endgame is SUCH a better ending to a saga than tROS. Maybe I shouldn't compare them because after all Marvel had more source content than SW, at least in this vein, but while I liked tROS I just felt like it fell short.

I think the MCU never suffered from a lack of vision in the story it was attempting to tell. With Star Wars, I do remember that George Lucas had an vision of 9 movies from way back when (in before someone says that's BS, I did in fact read this somewhere along the way), but once the PT was received with such contempt among many critics and so-called fans, he opted to stop at 6 films. When he sold to Disney, I've read that he had an outline for those other 3 films, but Disney seems to have not used a whole lot of his ideas. The sequel trilogy, to me, seems to have a rather loose connection to the original 6 movies, and so it's ending (and I loved TROS) just was never going to hit home as well as Endgame did.

Just my 2 cents.

The only thing that made me think of Endgame was Lando showing up with the cavalry just when all hope seemed lost.

I know Kevin Feige is God or whatever, but I'm worn out on comparing everything to the MCU as if Endgame were some gold standard in the history of human storytelling.

There is nothing worse than paying the price for your lack of vision.

Nobody said aanything about money. Not sure if your mom or the babysitter paid for your second showing, but the fact remains that you paid to see a movie, hated it, then some person exchanged some form of currency for another ticket that gained you access to the movie you didn't like, which you proceeded to watch again, followed up by your attempt to play captain cool guy and let us all know how terrible it is cuz bad-ass you saw it TWICE. And the rest has just been comedy gold.

Endgame hit better because they told their story in super connected fashion over 23 movies in 11 years. They have comics to adapt and get ideas from.

Star Wars has 11 movies in 40 years with different production companies and vastly different decades. They are all a product from the mind grapes of one person who had a vision adapting from nothing. If they had just released all 11 movies (in order) in the last 10 years it would have had a totally different effect.

Another thing hurting Star Wars was the fan reception of the second to last movie. Would Endgame have been a huge success without Infinity War being a success?

Anyways, I think comparing MCU to Star Wars is apples to oranges.

Yeah, this was one of the (many) things I didn't like. I was ok with force healing because it just seemed like something the force could allow you to do. Teleporting objects, though, broke the rules in a way that didn't make sense to me.

Marvel has 40 years of interconnected plots and backstories for all its characters. The MCU took the absolute coolest one of those interconnected stories and over the course of 20+ movies put it on screen.

Star Wars had the EU which was scattershot and mostly terrible. Disney officially ignored it, and didn't bother to hire good or creative writers for these movies. So JJ made two reboots, which ultimately were kind of boring and did nothing to build the universe, and RJ made one very different film which missed the mark with a lot of fans.

My kids like the ST and that will probably keep Star Wars going, but Disney needs to hand creative leadership to a whole new team and leave them alone for a decade. Or just focus on TV shows and theme park rides for a while.
