I know at one point early on there was talk of going Harry Potter style and breaking this last chapter up into two movies. I really think they should have done that. They sent us lightspeed straight into words about Palpatine sending out a mysterious broadcast letting them know he is back. I mean really, WTF does that even mean. This would have been better served split up into two 2 hour movies. My guess is they didn't want to do that because it would mess with the whole episode numbering thing they have going on and confuse people.
But still, all that being said, I enjoyed it and it seems about as good a conclusion to all this as could be. Now that I think about it, how else can you end the Skywalker Saga. It had to bring Palpatine back. He has been the main force of evil through all the previous episodes. This was a good way to finish things off. I just wish they would have built it out a bit better.

A few weeks ago I had mentioned a possible reason for why this wasn't broken up into two movies being that they wanted to keep with the stated 9 episodes and not break from that. Based on the quote below, it looks like that may have been the case. As a Star Wars purist, I get that. But that seems a poor reason for something when it affects the quality of the product. I just hope we get to see the reported 3 hours someday.

"I wish we could have done that," Terrio told Awards Daily. "There is a lot of plot in the movie, and as a writer, you always want scenes to let the plot breathe more. If there were a way of doing it, splitting it would have been my dream. We could have written these characters forever. There was so much backstory that had to be left by the wayside...But George always said it was nine movies. That was the natural size of the saga, and so, other than a few initial discussions, we never really advanced that conversation. Of course, as a writer, it breaks your heart to leave stuff on the table that you think would have given the story more depth and nuance and to give the characters more to do. Speaking for myself and not on the part of the studio, I do wish there could have been a 'Part 1' and a 'Part 2.'"

Nah, that's a BS cop out. Lucas is right. Star Wars are trilogies. They knew that going in and could have easily done it correctly had they actually implemented and executed a plan instead of freewheeling it and The Last Jedi trainwreck.

The blame isn't totally with RJ, it's with everyone involved at the top who allowed it.

Episode IV wasn't Episode IV until it was renamed a year after release. They could have just retroactively renamed TLJ to "The Last Jedi: A Star Wars Story" and we could have another Episode VIII.

I agree. This is all the result of poor / no planning (which baffles me). But knowing how screwed up things were after TLJ, someone needed to call a big audible and split the last movie into two. I think Lucasfilm needs a clearing of house just as much as the Dallas Cowboys do.

to further it... they should have kept part1 and 2 a secret. Then at the end you're wondering wtf when the movie ends. Black screen with just Episode X scrolling up followed by credits. Maximum buzz about the twist ending. Release it next Christmas. Double your profits.

(Hey Lucasfilm, i'm available for hire and can think a couple movies down the line)

Hadn't thought of that. That would have been the greatest cliff hanger / biggest surprise ever.

Re-watched Last Jedi Friday night for the first time since seeing it in the theater. Like many on here suggested; it sucked less on the 2nd viewing and was 'okay'.

Saw Rise on Saturday. I am 48. Star Wars dominated my youth. If someone, after Return of the Jedi, told me that 30+ years later when I watched the final episode of the story and characters that I imitated, read about and obsessed over for so long I would walk out of the theater with no emotion and more a feeling of 'meh' than anything else BUT that at the end of an "Avengers" movie, when every superhero movie to that point sucked complete ass, I would be bawling my eyes out, I would not believe them. I wish I was a simpleton like the positive posters on the other thread but I have seen too many good movies not to expect better.

I didn't need a grand slam for the win, an empty base walk off homer would have been fine; instead I got a base-loaded hit by pitch for the final run.

You had me until the simpleton comment. If that's how you really meant it then you don't deserve to get the ending you wanted.

This is wrong.

What you had was TFA bunted to first base.
TLJ hit into a double play that emptied the bases.
RoSW hit a blooper that ended up being an inside the park home run because of errors.

Watched it for a second time yesterday. Was actually bored rewatching it. Do not think this is going to hold up well at all.

Star Wars really has imploded in a 5 year time frame.

I've stayed off this thread (partially because I was on vacation), but I just can't imagine it being any good on a second watch. At least the first time had some mystery.

I'm kind of afraid this will be the case for me as well, so I've avoided a rewatch.

Is it? I think the Last Jedi was like hitting into a double play with the bases loaded and no outs. Like, a run scored and there's still a guy at third, but it could have been better, and so you left with a kind of empty feeling of what could have been.

I don't know what the baseball equivalent of The Rise Of Skywalker would be. Maybe like a line drive that gets stuck in the outfield fence for a double and then a balk call moves the runner to third and he scores on a fan interference call in the outfield?

Both TLJ and RoS feel like strikeouts with runners in scoring position

TLJ was a Rougie Odor strikeout with the bases loaded by swinging at three 55 foot pitches. ROS was the following AB and salvaged a bit of the mess with an infield hit and a run scored, but you were down 2.

TFA was like punting with a 4th and 1 at the 50 and downing the ball at the 1 yard line. Conservative, but well executed. TLJ was like going for a 67 yard field goal that got blocked and returned for a touchdown. Ballsy but a really stupid decision that ended up in disaster. TROS was like going for it on 4th and 1, fumbling the ball, picked up by the other team who then fumbled themselves. The play was a disaster, but somehow ended up working out. Execution sucked, but possession was retained with a first down.

This movie is continuing to comparatively struggle at the box office. RoS down $10.5 million for the third weekend only (days 16 & 17) to TLJ. Down $67 million for all 17 days compared to TLJ domestically.

China looks like it will deliver less than half of the revenue for TLJ. They will get their $1 billion but it will be work to get there (and Mickey may be buying a few tickets).
Texaggie7nine
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's pretty accurate.

Though I might say a better football analogy would better

TFA was a run up the middle for 3 yards. Very conservative and nothing original but true to the old style of the game.

TLJ was a long wheel route pass attempt at a TD but the QB got sacked with a 20 yard loss.

RoS was a 21 yard sweep with just enough to get the first down. It had to spend so much to make up for all the yardage lost on 2nd down that it ended up just being enough for a 1st down.

No scoring was made by any of them.

My analogy:

TFA was a sack for 5 yard loss.
TLJ was an attempt to make up for the 5 yard loss by doing a trick flea flicker but the RB tosses it over the QBs head for an additional 10 yard loss.
RoS was a more standard (yet complicated) screen pass that makes up that 10 yards but still finishes the drive 5 yards behind the original line of scrimmage.

The 10 year wait Disney is about to impose on itself is the punt.
bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
So TLJ was like a baseline out-of-bounds lob play towards the basket but your big couldn't catch the ball but gets bailed out by a foul and then only made one of the free throws. Good idea, halfway good execution on one end of the play but not the other, still an overall positive result, could have been better.

The Rise of Skywalker was like heaving a buzzer beater from halfcourt down two but there's still like four seconds on the clock and it falling woefully short but hitting a defender near the basket in the head and going in and tying the game. Not at all thought out, not particularly well executed, but somehow at the end it feels okay.

Is that better?

bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Where all of these analogies falter is that some of us think the Rise of Skywalker had to 'make up' for something that happened in The Last Jedi when it really didn't have to. It could have gone a new direction without backtracking.

For a sports analogy there it's like JJ Abrams felt like he had to go for two early to make up for a missed extra point by the Last Jedi but he really didn't have to and his point chasing ended up costing him a bit.

To me, the franchise is worse off now than if the new trilogy had never happened.

So in no way can it be a tie or even.

Personally I disagree, and I've been meaning to post this for a while. I was a Star Was fanatic in the 90s, but after the prequels I was so checked out I stopped consuming new Star Wars books, video games, etc

While the new trilogy has its problems, they roped me back in. Three trips to Celebration, buying the books and video games again, I have a ridiculous Star Wars LEGO hobby now too.

Although I have major issues with some of what Disney has done, I am still very thankful they bought Lucasfilm
bobinator

Also the high points of the sequel trilogy are light years better than anything in the prequels.

There's some stuff that kinda makes no sense or that was left hanging for no apparent reason, but each movie had some high points and the Kylo Ren arc itself was done exceptionally well. Truly one of the best villain arcs I think I've seen in movies.

I definitely disagree that the franchise is worse off now than it was before the sequel trilogy.
