Just want to say I enjoyed the movie. For me, the most emotionally charged scene was Chewie reacting to Leia's death

Thoughts;

Going in with low expectations, I enjoyed it for what it was.

I thought it was hilarious that the whole movie took a giant **** on The Last Jedi and Rian Johnson.

-Snoke being a weird clone (wtf)
-Reys lineage mattering a great deal
-Luke no longer being a grump
-Rose essentially not in the movie (and no weird romance with Finn)

The Leia scenes were just odd. I get they had to do it but man it looked and felt off.

You will never ever convince me that Palpatine was meant to return. His whole plot was truly bizarre. No explanation for his return. Weird Sith occult groups introduced along with hundreds of magic Star Destroyers with no explanation. He wants Ren and Rey to kill him and take his place? Goes against the whole character of Palpatine. He sought absolute power for himself. Not for others. He didn't give a **** about Vader. Wanted to replace him with Luke. He just wanted a servant.

I hate the Force powers in these new ones. They make Rey god mode. She can now pull a Plagieus and control life and can teleport objects through the Force. 900 year old Yoda was a freaking newb compared to that.

It is what it is. Liked it better than TLJ. I still don't understand what on earth they were doing not have a cohesive plan. They bought Star Wars for $4 billion and it was fresh off a panned prequel trilogy. These 3 films were so important to Disney and its future and they didn't put together a 3 film narrative that worked? How is that possible? The same company that put together a cohesive 20 freaking film Marvel universe? Feige isn't God. It isn't that difficult to craft an overarching story. Even the prequels, bad actions and dialogue aside, had a pretty great narrative. Whatever. Soapbox over.

This was an average movie at best and extremely flawed. It will not hold up well at all on repeated viewings.

The pacing was god awful and the story made no sense, especially anything to do with Palpatine. Better than Phantom Menace and AOTC and that's it.

Enjoyable. Two main problems:

1. Had to invent its own payoff because of the absolute doo doo that was TLJ

2. Not every Jedi needs to be better or stronger every time. The whole "next instalment needs to be bigger and better" one-upsmanship hurts the movie because there's no need for Rey to be that strong. Hell at least Baby Yoda gets pooped trying to heal someone

Oh and the original trilogy? Meant nothing. Emperor lived. Anakin died for nothing. No balance to the Force. The 3 main heroes are meant to die in the following ways:

Han- Return to smuggling life and killed by son
Luke-Die alone away from friends and family. Failed to recreate the Jedi
Leia-Fight the same war 30 years later; estranged from husband and abandoned by her brother; kills herself to distract her son for one second

The trilogy erased any accomplishments of the original

Every time the movie made us think someone was dead, but they make a return in the movie, all I could think of was the clown in Billy Madison.

At the end I wanted the old lady to sarcastically say "Oh great, just what the galaxy needs, another ****ing Skywalker"

What if "the prophecy" was conjured up by the Sith to eventually be used against the Jedi? Palpatine figured out a way to take advantage of their belief in this "prophecy" by making the Jedi believe his creation (Anakin) was the chosen one and bring the Order down from the inside. What he did not forsee was the Force countering his moves and having his creations kill him (twice).

So was I. It was pretty quiet, there was some clapping when Kylo/Rey kissed. A little too close to a Romeo and Juliet ending.

Parts of the movie I enjoyed:
  • Kylo Ren and Han Solo completing a circle from the TFA scene.
  • The light saber becoming an elegant weapon again. Some really cool saber moments during the Kylo/Rey fights and the final fight sequences in the sith temple.
  • The space/time interactions between Kylo and Rey, and how they showed different items crossing over between their locations during the fight.
  • Luke finally gets his X-Wing out of the water without struggling
  • Rey sliding down the sand hill on scrap metal at Tatooine. Nice callback to how we initially saw her in TFA, and it occurs at a place where we first see Luke in Ep IV.
  • The moment when Rey shoots force lightning at the transport, didn't expect that
  • Rey sailing across the treacherous water, makes the Perfect Storm look like a wave pool at Wet N Wild.
  • The rotating mechanism to activate Rey's light saber
  • Keri Russell

I agree with others that stated this movie is an absolute mess. Literally the entire first half of the movie is JJ trying to clean up the mess of TLJ, essentially making an even bigger mess of the plot. The pacing of the first half is also frantic and a bit overwhelming. We get absolutely no explanation as to how Palpatine is suddenly back. The force users are all exponentially more powerful now compared to the previous trilogies, including Palpatine. But despite this, Kylo somehow can't defeat 6 non-force users in fisticuffs without a lightsaber? Force ghosts can now suddenly interact with the environment? Kylo and Rey can transfer items between each from essentially anywhere in the universe? They can now fight each other through their force bond? Everyone with force powers can now just bring people back from death. We have basically gone in the complete opposite direction of midichlorians and just said "f*** it, just don't think AT ALL about it." The prequels sucked, but I think this trilogy has done significantly more damage to the franchise.

Okay I thought this the entire time it kept happening. Did they show the force healing in "The Madelorian" by baby Yoda just to say, "you've seen it before, now you can't call bs"

Also as soon as Rey said that it worked by "transferring some of her life force" I knew that's how Kylo was going out. The only way his arc made sense in this movie was him sacrificing himself for her somehow.

Any insight on the meaning of Rey's orange lightsaber at the end?.
She had been using everybody else's light saber. I figured that was her own light saber. I may be making a simple and dumb assumption. But it just seemed like a new start to me.
I assumed the same thing also, technically dont know how much time had passed when she was there on Tatooine, but we know from lore making your own lightsaber at some point is trial/part of becoming a full Jedi etc

I assume that was a human female and a male from an alien species where the males look like females. I can handle innerspecies kissing, but two females kissing is unnatural
I thought it was that minor pasty big nose female character kissing another female in the background of the celebration is what it looked like to me, was actually waiting as that scene began to see some awesome SJW stuff, lol

It's not really SJW if it's .02 seconds long, barely noticeable, and completely unheralded right?

On the other hand the amount of whining I've seen about Rose being erased from this movie is insane. One of the leads is a black man and the main character is a woman. There was no racist agenda in hiding Rose. Jar Jar was more likeable than her. I do feel bad for the actress, it's less on her and more on how poorly written and thought up that character was

Can't remember the exact quote, but RJ admitted that he created Rose only because he had initially written the Canto Bight quest with Poe and Finn, and couldn't make it work.

One thing I thought of last night is that generationally it seems like Rey should be his great granddaughter. Palpatine is a generation older than Anakin in the prequels. So if one of Rey's parents was his child (btw did they ever say which of them was his kid?) then that means someone banged him after he became a wrinkled mess. I want backstory on who that freak is.

Also after sitting with it a night I really enjoyed TROS. Even though it's the longest SW movie it would have benefited from an extra 15 minutes at the beginning. After the crawl they cut to Kylo and within a minute he's found the emperor. I thought to myself "Damn! They're really jumping right into it!"

Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter is just ridiculous. There's so much to discuss in this movie that this might just get blown by, but it's absurd. Like just that alone almost ruined the whole movie for me.

Basically spent two movies setting up a "a hero can come from anywhere" and then went completely the other way into something that make no sense.

And that was part of the main reason TLJ didn't work. The 3 new leads share almost zero screen time and it's so frustrating

To be fair, even George wasn't consistent with this. Luke and Leia's parentage was a critical plot point in the OT, but Anakin literally sprang up from nothing because the Force actually works through midichlorians. The prequels opened that door.

IMO no more or less ridiculous than Force Jesus Anakin.

Don't the official (canon?) comics suggest Palpatine influenced the midichlorian creation of Anakin? If so, there's no reason he couldn't have done the same with other children, even to the point of creating a truly biological child of his own. Perhaps they didn't all turn out strong in the Force like Anakin.

That actually really does open the door for Rey to be a Skywalker, in a sense, if Anakin's bloodline was essentially created by Palpatine.

Regarding Palpatine wanting them to kill him, he was a shell of his physical self. He was physically being kept alive through aid and his body wasn't fully functional. His only hope was to transport into another body. In this case, he would take over Reys body, but it would be him mentally, etc. However, when he zapped Rey and Kylo at the same time, that diode convergence or whatever Kylo called it was so powerful, it helped restore Palpatines body. So at that point, he just needed to suck the force energy out of them and didn't need them to kill him any longer. So that zapped the force life out of them just about. They were both near death before they overcame him. Then Kylo used his last remaining bit of life to bring Rey back to life.

I watched it last night at EVO in Cibolo. I had to sleep on it to wrap my brain on the movie.

Here are a few thoughts. .. mostly rambling and overall I liked this movie a lot but not at the New Hope and Empire Strike Back level.. and believe that their was a great movie in that script but they wasted it by compressing the story into a single movie.

1. They should have split this movie into two movies and this was the 2nd and 3rd act of the trilogy.

- The 2nd movie should have been about both Ren and Rey trying to discover the real master of the first order.. one working from the inside and one from the out.. and still opposing each other.
- Snoke should have been killed by the Emperor at the end of the 2nd movie .. which would introduce the Emperor as as a true villain and Kylo Ren accepting his role as the figurehead leader of the First Order.
- Third movie would have been about ending the Sith threat and more importantly the return of Ben Solo. More focus on the redemption arc.

2. Finn is force sensitive.. l felt they hinted that in TFA .. but this movie hits you over the head with it. He is force sensitive at the level more in common with a normal Jedi .. show the contrast of Rey *** Super God mode *** Jedi.

3. If they make another trilogy.. they should frame it around the heir of empire storyline...
- Thrawn vs Rey
- Snoke is a clone of Ezra Bridger
- Rey starting a new Jedi Academy w/ Finn as a student.. introduce characters like Corran Horn
- instead of Jorus .. use Mace Windu.. I would love to see Samuel L. Jackson playing an unhinge clone of Mace .. who believes that he is last real Jedi Master .. make a great foil to Rey
- Poe is not Leia .. he can't build a New/New Republic political side.. would love to see him and Wedge work to restore the Republic.

4. Wasted Wedge Antilles in a 2 second shot of him in a turret. Wedge should have been Rogue 1 .. and he should have arrived leading an X-wing Squadron. Into the battle...

5. They cut the part that the girl on Endor was actually Lando's daughter that was kidnapped by the first order.. which is why Lando remained on the planet. The end line was not suppose to be creepy.. it was suppose to be a father and daughter reuniting .. another bad edit.

6. Love Rey final lightsaber.. very Niomi Sunrider (who story should be told as she and Rey are both Mary sue Jedi)

7. Sad to hear Asoka voice when Rey is lying on the ground.. ... implied that she is dead .. then occurred to me that she would have been around 70 years old.. still seem to young for her to die. Would have like to see the images of the Jedi as well.

8. The new comic made Palpatine .. Anakin father via force manipulation. .. ie he got Shimi pregnant through sith wizardry.. ..

So in conclusion .. Palpatine had two trees.. Anakin and Rey Father .. Anakin had Luke and Leia .. and Rey Father had Rey .. So Rey and Ben are cousins ..

Again lots of rambling and I will probably watch this movie one more time in the theater.

I think at the end of the day, this was a sloppy film with so much to cover that it was always going to be overwhelming, but they did a good job of containing everything. Like someone else said, there are parts of TFA & TLJ where the film seems to stall for a bit. ROS is full blast and non-stop. It felt like an hour in the theater instead of 2.5 hours and it even had my wife on the edge of her seat to see where it goes.

In the end it felt very much like Star Wars and I enjoyed the adventure. Not a huge fan of the Palpatine reveal, but I still found him more threatening than Snoke ever was. I enjoyed Ben's redemption and sacrifice. Force healing (while not in the films) has been around for a long while in books and games so I have no problem making it canon. I like that they made it a sacrifice of basically giving some of your life force to do it, which is what killed Ben in the end.

I think it did an decent job of fixing TLJ in terms of Luke. I remember walking out of TLJ and sitting in my car in disbelief that they more or less trashed one of my childhood heroes. This was much better treatment for the character. I also liked returning Luke & Leia's lightsabers to Tatooine.

I always thought Rey should have yellow lightsaber blade reminiscent of the old Jedi Sentinels who where had talents/teaching outside of combat/The Force such as mechanics/medics.

I'll have no problem watching this film over and over again and will smile the whole time. I cannot wait to see where we go next in the franchise.

I assume because he kept saying it was part of a sacrifice/ritual. She had to voluntarily accept him maybe knowing the consequences and she was going to so that she could save her friends. Ben showing up maybe gave her the strength to resist and not go down that path.

As a longtime lurker, I'm pretty sure Rey was being discussed as a Palpatine ever since she got all pokey with her lightsaber in TFA.

The pace was crazy because he needed two movies. The Palp questions are explained decently enough with a couple of one liners. I'm excited to watch it again.
