Yeah the duffer bros were very excited about the "bad arnold" they made this season. I really enjoyed the character. He died in a badass way too..... unlike Hopper... who is still very much alive... i hope.

For those questioning the mall in small town Hawkins, you forget that small town Jasper, MO had a mall and getting a JCPenny in 1989. All Jasper had was a hospital, general store (blown up), car dealership (driven through), and a bar called the Double Deuce. Population couldn't have been more than 200 tops.

I also cant cope with the way the season ended and im a bit of a emotional mess right now.
Edit: El also cant use her powers so she cant really see if Hopper is alive or dead. Makes for another interesting twist. Season 4 is going to be epic!

Are there more demigorgans in the upside down, still? The one in Russia was not the same from season 1, correct?

Theres no reason we shouldnt believe that there were more portals to the upside down open in hawkins. They have a demogorgan. That creature alone could open portals whenever it wanted. My point is, its almost easier and more interesting to write Hopper to still be alive than not. A lot of very good avenues the story can go with.
We didn't see any limit on the number of demogorgans. I thought the ones in Hawkins were killed off or disappeared when the gate was closed. But there still could be any number of them in The Upside Down, right? Which would mean the Russians could conceivably be bringing more in.redline248 said:

That said, I think the American is Russia is probably Brenner. That's why we don't have to go to Russia, but Russia brings him to Hawkins to "unlock" El. Hopper is in the upside down and El rescues him.

My guess is that because it took place in the summer, they wanted a summer release, and 2018 was too soon.
It's been weeks since I finished watching season 3, but I woke up this morning with a couple totally random and practical theories to set up season 4.
1. The portal to the upside down can somehow also be used as a teleporter and there's a second machine in Russia. This explains where Hopper went (straight to Siberia), how so many Russians managed to get into Hawkins (they teleported there), and why the Russians were interested in the machine (a teleportation invasion of the West). Teleportation also allows you to quickly reunite the characters from across the world next season without having to come up with a reason for everyone to fly to Siberia.
2. The Russians learned about the portals from El. Remember how the scientists in season 1 were having her use her powers to spy on the Russians? Also remember how touching the Demigorgon made it aware of her? Perhaps she touched a Russian scientists and that made him aware of her in her lab in Hawkins and then they started researching and building their own device to access the upside down and maybe even that black space she goes when blindfolded. I also think it's a safe bet the evil "Papa" scientist helped them.

Oh no.... i had a important theory just hit me too.... what if the American that is alive in Russia is El's papa. Remember in S3 when possessed Billy said he was still alive? It would make sense. I wonder if anyone has thought about this or made that connection.
Did Billy really say Papa was alive? I totally missed that

The show doesn't really have emotional stakes, as it's ultimately an homage to the shows in the 80s that... really didn't have any true emotional stakes.
Bob from S2 was probably the most significant character to die in all three seasons of this show.
