Final episode was all over the place tonally - just like an 80s movie.

The Schwarzenegger Russian dude was cool.

Green radioactive sludge was a little strange.

I got tired of Lucas' sister's shtick.

so season 2, ele closes the hole, and mind fury lives, but season 3, they close it back, and the mind fury dies?

As someone else said, the part of the mind flayer purged from Will was still around. When Ele closed the gate, the mind flayer couldn't control it anymore, and it became inert. When the Russians started reopening the gate, the mind flayer was able to reestablish its connection to that part of itself.

Anyone else curious about how the Russians seem to know so much about the upsidedown and if that one Russian general from the first chapter was being controlled by the mindflayer?
I guess they were spying on Hawthorne Labs, like they were spying on everything else./

I must have missed if the general was possessed. I did not get that vibe.

I kind of got it. He was dead set on opening a gate, and the Russians just seemed to know so much about it. It seemed like no one at Hawthorne understood it at all, yet here are the Russians breaking down the door with this giant machine.

ETA I'm also not sure Hopper is The American. I think there's a good chance, but it could also be Brenner. The fact that he was still alive was mentioned for a purpose in season 2, but he was totally absent this season. That could explain some of what the Russians know.

I don't think the american is Hopper either -that's too obvious- they'll probably make us wait until the end of Season 4 Episode 1 to find out it's someone else, but Hopper is still alive just somewhere else

No, Casper Van Diem was not in this season.

They should bring Gary Busey in as the new Sheriff for Season 4.... Full circle.

i did find it funny how the demogorgan ran roughshod on the midwest for weeks (or months?) yet in soviet russia theyve already got it caged up like a pet.

I loved this season. I finished ep 7 at around 2am and couldn't stop. Work was rough this am.

The heavy-booted thug was such a good Terminator tribute.

I liked the Steve/Robin relationship. A little bit of expectations subverted there... if she was on the dl don't lead the guy on talking about how obsessed you were with him (/s). Strikeout Steve.

The last ep got me kinda emotional. Didn't anticipate that. Billy is one dimensional but his scenes have a certain tension to them, sucks he's gone. Hopper and the "take a painfully long time to nod so we know it's okay for her to do the thing" trope is so blah.

A lot of perfect timing, travel discontinuity, horror movie logic in this season. I get the show isn't meant to be taken seriously in that way, but the volume was noticeable.

I found Joyce to be omega annoying basically all season.

I'm glad 11 lost her powers. Deus Ex Eleven was getting pretty old.

I'm really, really, really glad they ditched the elementary school relationships early on.

Really enjoyed season 3, it's just behind season - imo.
Random thoughts:

Small towns like Hawkins don't have malls like Starcourt. (Nitpicky for sure)

Harrington's love interest is a lesbian? Didn't see that coming.

The Russians will no doubt have some security cameras in their next installation. Commie idiots.

Can't believe they killed Alexi/Smirnoff..... didn't see that one coming at all. That big Russian was a bad dude.

If they knew the mindflayer hated heat, why not make some Molotov cocktails or something more than fireworks?

Can we get rid of Eleven's incessant nose bleeds? Just say she's gotten better at her powers or something and it doesn't happen anymore.

Similarly, Will's goosebumps were a little played out. They see the flayer coming 100 yards down the road, go in the house and prepare. Then Will announces, he's here. Ya think?!

Russians were a great secondary antagonist. Very true to mid 80s... God I hated those commie ba*tards especially after watching Red Dawn. AVENGE ME BOYS!!!

I really liked Hooper with the Magnum PI shirt. The little scene with him kicking back with the beer on his lazy boy recliner was on point for every working man at the end of a long day.

I hope season 4 finds the gang sneaking into the upside down to get Hooper back (Ell will sense him)
An American military team will also be in the upside down fighting Russians and demigorgons and whatever. We find out more what the upside down really is. In the end, the Americans & Russians teal up to defeat the external evil and have a Rocky 4 moment of perestroika.

Yeah, I thought it funny that they just kinda forgot about the whole fire weakness until the end. A few of the early battle scenes were unnecessarily difficult for them because of it.

I think they did an okay job with the nosebleeds. I don't remember the exact joke, but El does something subtle for one of the kids and sneakily wipes her nose after. She also had a double nostril bleed at one point that made it clear she was stretching herself. Maybe there's a better way to do those two moments, but I feel any attempt to write out the nosebleeds would be kinda forced.

Well, that demogorgon was also dimension hopping. I'm curious if that was a special ability because it was touched by Ele in that kind of in between space with the water, because the barrier between dimensions in Hawkins was weakened by Ele opening the gate at the lab, or both. No matter what, no other demogorgon has shown that ability, and the mind flayer seemingly can't either.

Well, starcourt was probably purpose built by the Russians as a cover. It's not a real mall. What got me was how the Russians built such a huge facility without being noticed. There had to be hundreds of workers, and they couldn't have imported them all. They also did it in an incredibly short amount of time for the size and scope of the facility.

Eleven's nose bleeds seem important or at least symbolic. I think they're a result of the toll that using her powers takes on her, no matter how good she is at controlling them.

It does seem that the nosebleeds are no longer an issue. It's just something that happens, and they *think* there's no problem with using her power whenever they want, even if to just "spy" on their friends, close a door, or make a joke...

No one has really mentioned the American military general(?) who stared rather power-hungry-like at the gate in the Russian facility when the cavalry arrived at the end.

I have no other insight into that, just pointing that out.

That's the scientist from season 2. That's not a power hungry stare, that's a, "**** my life I thought this was over," stare. He's just realized that the Russians know about the upside down and probably have no idea what they're dealing with, and there's a distinct possibility that a) the mind flayer could return through an opening they create or b) it already has control of them. Considering what he saw in season 2, he's probably peeing his pants a little too.

Wrapped it up last night. Someone's comment made it chuckle.

"I hope for season 4 they modernize it and make it less cheesy"

That's why we watch STRANGER THINGS. THAT'S THE POINT. It's 80s nostalgic corny.

-Starcourt was beautiful. That blue/pink neon and that sick synth solo hit me hard

-Mr Wheeler out kicked his coverage. Mrs Wheeler is a whole damn MEAL

-Hair Harrington. Absolutely love this actor. Glad they put him and Dustin together. Then he goes and kills it with Uma's daughter. His delivery is great. Keeps getting his ass kicked

-season 4 no clue what they're gonna do. These kids sure smack dab at the beginning of puberty.

-totally forgotten about Paul Reiser.

Loved the pacing, the comedy, the emotional stuff, the MUSIC. Gg duffers

Loved this season and can't imagine Hopper is dead...especially convenient with Eleven losing her powers so she couldn't try to search for him as you know she would to see if he was alive anywhere.

SIAP but I was just reading this article about the mall they located in Atlanta to do the filming. It's a pretty good read. Here is a snippet that sort of relates to your comment:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/la-et-st-stranger-things-3-starcourt-mall-how-they-made-it-20190711-story.html

Quote:

One of the most difficult tasks was figuring out which stores would have been in an Indiana mall in 1985.

Trujillo said the Duffers specifically wanted to included the fictional Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor, as well as a Gap and some approximation of a Glamour Shots photo studio. Beyond that, it was largely up to him to decide which stores would be featured at the Starcourt and serve as "hero locations" for the characters.

This required research a whole lot of it. With help from set decorator Jess Royal and art director Sean Brennan, Trujillo went on a deep dive into the history of the malls in America. The goal was to determine which "quintessential mall stores" shoppers might have found in 1985 in the Midwest. It was a complicated task, since "the nature of malls is they're constantly changing," but also an enjoyable one. "You inevitably end up down these rabbit holes reading about mall theory and the nature of consumerism in the late '70s."

Even though he tries to avoid internet scrutiny, Trujillo was "painfully aware of the fact that each frame is being picked apart by someone who is obsessing over the details" and looking for anachronisms, he said. "We definitely feel under the microscope, especially when it comes to getting these really specific period details in a space like a mall where everybody has a memory of it."
