"just felt that I wasn't a main priority at Oregon"... while Oregon was (checks notes) preparing for the Rose Bowl. Sorry kid, but if that's true, its really funny

If I'm a star player on the team that wins the championship this year and I'm not eligible for the NFL, I'm hitting the portal for max payday. I don't care which school offers the most, that's where I land.

If your new team faulters, then do you opt out early for NFL?

Just make sure you set some records before you opt out of the season.

I hate what college football and really what most of sports have become.

All about $ now. Years ago I feel like there was more love of the game.

Now days...these fearsome warriors suddenly become too scared to play 1 game as they might get hurt. And could care less which teams they play for.

Me neither, this is just crazy. Even the NFL is more stable than college football.

I recommend getting acquainted with you local high school athletics program.

Seriously, it brings the joy back to sports.

It's a dangerous game and most will pay (health) later on with age. I dont blame any of them

@dixichkn I don't get what you don't get. Over my 30 year career in technology, employers and employees kept making quarterly decisions based on: demand, supply, innovation, competition, profit, relationships, growth, location, travel, advancement opportunities, and compensation.

Are you aware of any for profit industry in the last 20 years that retained all labor for 4 years, regardless of performance or market dynamics?

If I signed a contract to work at IBM and Amazon gave me a bigger paycheck/better job, then I would leave too.

This happens all the time in most industries. I am not quite sure why this has become some moral issue. Just plain weird.

People need to do what is best for them because your boss really doesn't care about you when its time to lay you off.

Being a fireman is a dangerous job too. But whenever there is a fire, they always show up.

If you think the game is too dangerous then you don't have to play.

Honestly, there's a lot of this same sort of crap going on in HS. Not so much the money but kids transferring illegally for supposedly better "situations." Schools aren't doing much about it because they're doing it as well -- maybe not in all sports but in some. In other cases, the admins take a head in the sand approach and sign off on the participation forms without even checking with the relevant coach.

If only 5% of the stories I've heard are in any way true, "joy" and "high school sports" wouldn't have much more meaning than NIL and college athletics. I don't think HS sports will be around much longer, in fact.

Completely agree. Over the past couple of years I've grown almost completely detached from college and pro sports, at least to the point where I don't really care that much about the results. Meanwhile I've thoroughly enjoyed watching my son play high school and travel sports. So much less frustration, so mucg more fun and fulfilling.

What?

These guys are in the sports and entertainment industry.

If a first responder was offered 2MM for eight or nine months work, you can bet your ass they'd go get paid.

When someone is wanting to pay you more, legally, you go get paid. Great opportunities in life are finite.
Onionman

We were talking about missing the old days of football.

My point was these guys get paid now but then still opt out of games.

If a fireman goes off to get his $ as you say, I bet he still shows up to put out fires.

(Edit: reading back posts above I admit my point above may not have been clear)

The money just isn't there to sustain "college" football at this level of insanity.

The current mercenary behavior really negates college tradition.

You're not rooting for an Aggie or a Duck or a Husker.

You're cheering for a freelancer with no ties to the institution or culture of the university they play for, yet we (all of college football) absurdly pretend through tradition that we share a commonality through the name on the front of the jersey (might as well rip that off too)

when, really, we've been reduced to supporting the hired hands wearing our colors for the day. Yay.

As of December 30th it was reported we lost 22 players from our 30-player 2022 class for a reason that is not declaring for the NFL Draft.

Fair enough.

Any comparison would make more sense within a similar industry.

We are witnessing a huge change in this league. Hopefully smarter rules are put in place overtime, but the past two season indicate parity in CFB is at an all-time high.

If they're 18+, they can serve and die in combat for our US military. Id say they're all men
