Jason Statham is fighting alongside Dino-Rock, but when he realizes he's on the wrong side, they throw down.

While the fight is going on, Dom rides a Transformer into orbit. Then it turns into a Charger, and Dom uses it as a missile and crash lands right into The Rock.

Have any of you read Crichton's JP sequel The Lost World?

It is, by far, the worst POS I've ever read. It's awful. It's terrible. When the movie came out, thankfully Spielberg ditched 90% of the story. It is still by no means a good movie. In fact, it's pretty bad. However, having just read that godawful novel, the movie was such a relief because it could have been much worse.

The third movie is a glorified B-movie with a huge budget and good cast. Again, it's not a great movie. However, as a throwback B-movie, it's pretty damn entertaining.

Probably the first time I've ever seen anyone prefer Lost World the movie to Lost World the book

Yeah, I actually loved The Lost World book. Way more than the movie. Granted, I was 17 when I read it, but still.

Crichton's lame backtrack on the T. Rex (the whole "oh wait, they CAN see you if you're not moving, they just weren't hungry" bit) annoyed the hell out of me. If you're wrong in fiction just roll with it. Or at least come up with a better excuse.

I read it when I was a teenager, so I may misremember, but didn't it also have to do with it being nighttime and raining?

That franchise was perfect at three movies, but Disney knew they could buy it, crank out some junk and plenty of nostalgic moms and dads would take their kids to see it because that is what their parents did for them and gosh wasn't isn't it all warm and fuzzy

I guess you could say they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they didn't stop to think if they should.

There were 6 SW movies when Disney bought it.

Uhhhh are you being serious? The book was pretty damn good. Wish the movie would have followed more. A lot darker of a story, slap an R rating on The Lost World and there toys go

Yes, I'm serious. Hated the book. It read like someone else trying to write a sequel to Jurassic Park and trying hard to sound like Crichton. While reading it, I had trouble believing that it actually was written by him.

And here's another thing that pi$$ed me off about the book and how it was obviously written purely to be turned into a Spielberg sequel: in the book (spoilers), Malcom dies. No ambiguity about it. He dies...succumbs to the injuries he suffered with the T Rex. Now, Spielberg decided to change that in the movie. Not a surprise, really. When you have Jeff Goldblum doing his Jeff Goldblum thing, you don't want to just kill him off.

Now, Crichton backs himself in a corner because, instead of basing the sequel around the dinosaur expert (you know, the only character that it makes sense to return to an island of dinosaurs), he instead wants (or was pressured) to have the main character be Goldblum's Malcom character. Who he had killed off. So, when his novel starts, we learn that Malcom wasn't dead after all.....

And that's seriously about the extent of the explanation of how he survived. It was insulting.

Nope. I hated this book.

Its been 20 years since I've read it, but I seem to remember thinking it was ok. Not nearly as great as the first, but I don't remember hating it either.

I loved JP book. Stopped reading LW right after I started it because Malcolm was alive. Stupid.

Malcolm being alive in The Lost World book = Preposterous!

Jurassic Park scientists somehow finding intact DNA for dozens of different dinosaurs species, resurrecting them 65 million years later, and immediately turning them into theme park attractions = Sure!

There's a passage in the novel of Jurassic Park stating how the Costa Rican government wouldn't even allow them to give Malcolm and Hammond (who also died in the book) a proper burial.

I guess the technology to determine if a body is alive or dead hadn't reached Costa Rica by then......
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I get the frustration, but Malcolm clearly ended up being the most popular character from the movie and it made sense to retcon it and have him be the main character of both the second book and movie. I can forgive Crichton for not having the foresight to know Spielberg/Koepp/Goldblum would one day make the character so iconic. It was a unique situation that I feel deserves a pass. Heck, one of the earliest drafts of the original JP script actually combined Grant and Malcolm into one character. It could have been much worse...

Its been a really long time since I read either JP or LW, or watched the movies. Malcolm is Goldbloom's character, right?

I never had the sense that he was more popular than Grant in the first movie. I always wondered why he was the main character for the 2nd.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, Malcolm is Goldblum's character. I'd say he's easily the most quoted/memorable of the cast.

So memorable that I personally never knew the character's name.

Granted, I don't think I ever knew any of the names except Grant, Hammond and Tim.

Been a couple of decades since I read JP, but just stumbled on Lost World a couple of years ago. Found it interesting that most recent movie used the Dino written about in Lost World, that was just an afterthought in the book.

I didn't really like TLW book when it was first published. I dusted it off a few years back, around the time they re-released Jurassic Park the movie in 3D. The book was not as bad on my second read some 20 years later.

As for the movie version, I think I am one of maybe three people on planet earth that actually liked it.
