Until earlier tonight I hadn't been on this thread since the trailer was released. I went back to page 8 to find the trailer to watch it. It was pretty much the same with some minor edits and differences. I don't remember the song at the end being Tom Sawyer (RUSH).

Still... pretty cool seeing it on the big screen - especially since it was new to me not seeing it here on this thread first.

I know for a fact that there were a couple versions of the trailer, if not more, that were edited. The friend I mentioned earlier saw at least two, so it's possible a slightly different version is being shown in theaters this weekend since the one last weekend was a Comic-Con premiere.

Just finished the book last night.

Now I grew up in the 90s, so maybe this book wasn't necessarily aimed at me but it was meh. It's not bad, but has its problems, buts it's also not great.

The plot is super generic(which maybe is an 80s reference itself) and the pacing is thrown off on the narrators need to explain every 80s reference in full 2 page detail.

I hope Spielberg can fix the pacing because it should make a good movie.

I honestly think that's why some don't enjoy it as much.

There are little things like Planet Skolnick that only someone who was tween and teen in the 80s would get.

As someone born the same year as Halliday and Morrow, these references are the same movies I loved as a kid, minus the uber nerdy stuff.

I'm reading the book and I love the eighties, but the book is not good. That isn't to say it can't be a good movie, but I can't read it any longer. When he slapped Ghostbuster stickers on a Delorean ... come on, can't it be a little more subtle?

It bothered me RPO called out Krystal of Skulls but kept the prequel trilogy in the holy trilogies.

Very hard to place that picture - no scene from the book comes to mind.

The way she's dressed implies it's in the OASIS.

The way he's dressed implies it's outside.

Her taking off the goggles implies its outside.

If it is outside there's definitely no analogue in the book.

If it's inside, the only possible thing in the book possible would be Aech's chat room maybe?

But at this point, I think we have to assume the movie is going to be really different than the book. They might meet 5 minutes into the movie.

I was thinking Aech's basement too, but it doesn't really look like it was described.

Definitely looks like outside OASIS. It looks like Artemis is standing on one of the immersive 360 platforms that lets you run around. There is a cage overhead and what looks like a harness behind her.

I'm now assuming that this movie uses the same universe and general principle of winning Halliday's prize but the rest of the plot will be 98% new.

ETA, if that is Aech's basement there should be arcade games, juke boxes, TVs, etc all over the place. Setting looks like abandoned warehouse in the real world.

Almost looks like 2 separate images with the coloring. Maybe there's some kind of bit where Wade is in the real world looking at a hologram of Art3mis or something. Who knows?

I was also thinking about this possibility. And like someone said earlier, won't be shocked if they meet in the real world way earlier in the movie.

So, just trying to think of wheee they maybe diverged from the book - could this be the shop Wade goes to when he's on the run? Wonder if they end up meeting there and he tells her of his plan.

Also, I don't think it was accidental that they only show the one side of her face. It will be interesting to see if she has a port wine stain on the other side.

I like the tone of the pictures we have seen so far. It's as I imagined the book to be, personally.

There are two things I want drom this movie:

1) Art3mis to be a legit badass in the OASIS. Would validate Wade's feeling for her in my mind.

2) When they walk into the party, it better feel like they're royalty.

This looks like some sort of command center.

I think it's either Spielbergs rendition of Aech's basement

or its possible they omitted Ogg from all or some of the third act of the movie and this is where they base their operations for the final battle instead of Ogg's house in Oregon

Yeah they were definitely private in the books. But I can see them changing it up in the movie. Who knows lol
