Well it's set in like 2045 or something like that so it isn't supposed to look like it came from the 80s.

That is exactly what the book was, a future world with 80's references. Yes, the nostalgia made the book a cult classic, but below all that was also a fairly entertaining story and quest.

At this point, it might be prudent to post the publisher's summary from the book jacket.
Quote:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confinespuzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to winand confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

In other words, Willy Wonka traded his love of candy for 80s geek culture. If that concept appeals to you, then you'll like the book. If it doesn't, you might like it anyway. But then again, you might not. Either way, it's not the end of the world.

However, any move with a "virtual utopia" and "puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with pop culture of decades past" is going to necessarily be kind of heavy on both the virtual utopia and pop culture of decades past.

Personally, I'm stoked to watch a delorean rip around the screen. If that makes me a simpleton, then pass the memeber berries cause I'm okay with that.

I realize this post was probably made in the general sense rather than being directed at me personally, but just for the record, I'm not that guy. I don't hate things simply because they get popular. I just genuinely didn't enjoy this book. If I found a random copy of it in a library and didn't know a thing about it's cult following, I'd feel the same way.

I have no problems with the trailer - I think it actually looks pretty cool.

I got stuck about halfway through Armada. Kept waiting for it to pick up but hasn't yet.

I read that as "Amanda" at first and wondered if I was in the right forum for a split second.

I like this post.

I loved the concept, just not the writing. "Either way, it's not the end of the world" is the best way to wrap this up.

This is a teaser and not a trailer and the cross section of people who have read the book and will see this trailer is pretty high. The formal trailers won't come out until next year, closer to release. At that point it'll be easier to tell whether this movie is going to be crappy (like this teaser suggests) or if there is a narrative thread that ties the references together well enough to make the movie good (the way the book does).

With the teaser you're getting a summary of the film that was made to appeal to the comic-con crowd. The kind of people that woo when the Guardians or Spiderman pop up on screen during an Infinity War trailer. It's to generate excitement among the people that are already excited about the film, not bring in the larger audience, that comes later.

Ha, just in general and definitely not meant to be, "if you don't like this you're dumb!"

It just appeared that we have a massively popular book that's now getting the blockbuster treatment and suddenly there are articles saying, "is it really that good though actually?"... Just seems like it's the same thing that always happens with hugely popular items... Just like with La La Land and bands, i.e. Coldplay, Mumford and Sons, etc...

I don't care if someone doesn't like it. Nothing is going to be completely infallible... I personally loved it and can't wait for the movie, especially with Spielberg helming it. Just seems like a match made in Heaven.

Also for what it's worth, like most on here, I thought Cline's follow up Armada sucked.

The story is interesting. The writing is sometimes like reading a VCR installation manual.

Nice ****post.

The vast majority of the movie going audience does not know about this book.
I guarantee you they will see this in theaters and most will shake their head and laugh at this like it is hot garbage.

It looks... dumb to someone that is not familiar with the book.

It comes off as a try-hard movie throwing out all the pop culture references and a **** ton of CGI making it look generic like every other all CGI crapfest from the last 5 years.

Yes, the book is lauded among geeks. I am not criticizing the book; I have not read it so I can only speak of what others have said about it,

But I have seen the trailer, and I can guarantee my assessment will be similar to that of the larger audience.

Yes, it has Spielberg's name on it which gives it more clout, but it does not change the fact that it looks like a better told "Pixels".

How would someone not familiar with the books know its "try harding with pop culture references"

I have a friend who hasn't read the book, and thought the trailer looked cool and like the next great Spielberg movie, visually.

You just come off like a baiting jerkoff

I actually agreed with this. But obviously don't want to sound snobby to people that actually liked the trailer and couldn't be bothered reading the book.

I couldn't put down this book. It was amazing and finished it in three days. Probably would've finished it in a day if I didn't have other things going on.

It was a fun read. I'm not usually a sci-fi or geeky type stuff fan but for some reason I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Looking forward to the movie although I know it's going to be different than the book.

Listening to the audio book this week, and I just got to the part where he talks about the pointlessness of the US elections: "now that everyone can vote from home via the OASIS, the only people who can get elected are movie stars, reality TV personalities, or radical televangelists."

Maybe the OASIS actually was rolled out in December 2012 and we haven't realized it yet.

Wasn't Iron Giant a late 90's movie? Why start the trailer with a big, prominent shot of the Iron Giant if it's supposed to be 80's pop culture?

hasn't been discussed i don't think but it looks like it will be a 80s 90s pop culture instead of just 80s

I am guessing they replaced many or all of the robots they win after completing the second gate, along with the Ultraman robot Wade, Daito, and Shoto earn after completing the Ultraman Quest. Probably another problem of securing rights to all the different options that were available. It could also be that they gave the AI Wade uses throughout the latter part of the book a form in the shape of the iron giant robot. The final battle looks to be in tact so it'd be difficult to get rid of Ultraman since that robot is critical to the conclusion of the story.

The story involves pop culture from several decades, just the 80s are the most prevalent because that's when a lot of this sort of stuff became mainstream

NOTE: The link is pretty damn spoilery for people that haven't read the book, so watch your ass out there.

Still interested?

You sure?

OKAY THEN

Ready Player One is not exactly Moby Dick, prosewise. But it's a nerd-culture sensation, the apex of the Knowing Everything About Uncool Things Is The Coolest Thing Of All era of pop culture immersion, and also a triumph of plot over style, telling over showing, '80s ephemera over literally anything else. This movie is going to either thrill or disgust everyone, with no middle ground, with the "disgust" tier split between those offended that Spielberg's not faithful enough to the book and those offended that he's entirely too faithful.

Prose wise it's not moby dick? Did this guy ever read moby dick? There were about 100 pages on scientifically incorrect bs about whales. Don't get me wrong, it's a literary treasure, but it's not an enjoyable read.

Just relistened to RP1. Such a fun book. I love all the 80s stuff even if it is a little before my time. And after rewatching the trailer and having the book so fresh in my mind, I am very worried about it not even being good at this point.

Just finished listening to the audiobook as well (I've previously read a hard copy twice). With it fresh in my mind, there's no doubt the movie is gonna be VERY different.

Kind of wish this got a mini-series treatment instead.

I just saw an extended preview for READY PLAYER ONE before ATOMIC BLONDE. I am pumped to see this movie.... my anticipation for RP1 is up there with BLADE RUNNER.

The trailer started with music behind it that sounded like a slow version of the theme from the original WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. The preview ended with a popular rock song that I can't remember at the moment.

The visuals are stunning starting with an aerial of the stacks and some narration to set up why the protagonist spends most of his time in Oasis.

Anyone else see the extended trailer?
