Actually I think I did just see a Light Cycle as well though...

Book was amazing. Trailer was fun as hell. Can't wait.

A Delorean and The Iron Giant

Is it just me or did that music sound like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? I'm assuming so, and therefore it's brilliant.

Why is it in Ohio and not Oklahoma?

I would have teased the trailer with the Halliday monologue of the keys and eggs with it ending with a fullout war scene at the end with flash shots.

My guess is due to cramming the scale of the book into a 2-2.5 hour movie, they had to lose some stuff like him moving from Oklahoma to Ohio while traveling under a fake identity. So just have him start in Ohio to save some time

Screen Junkies did a pretty good breakdown where two guys who have read the book explain it to two guys who haven't. I think it's important to realize this is a teaser trailer-all about showing how crazy the world can get. The later marketing will give some of the actual plot.

Understandable but then are they going to get rid of them blowing up his aunts trailer and him having to run and go into hiding? I mean he still looks the same if he isn't fat so they should recognize him when he infiltrates

If I recall correctly, wasn't he skinny when he went into the IOI detention center? He changed his identity, used chemical hair remover and was drinking/eating nutrient slop, then gave his fake identity debts to IOI to have the debt collectors come and take him in.

Trailer was a mixed bag to me but they're trying to pull in the people that never read the book. I'm hoping this film is 80% drama, 20% action for the first 75% and then reverse for the final 25%.

I'm a slow reader but I did it in one sitting. Like Bunk said, it's not award winning literature, but it's really fun.

Depends on how old you are. I loved the pop culture references that many wouldn't get that weren't cognizant in the 80s.

In this case, I think it would be nearly impossible to not make changes because of licensing. The licensing costs would astronomical even before you factor in studios price gouging once they find out its for Ready Player One. I'm ok with them changing up some of the puzzles as long as it stays true to the spirit of the book.

So I can only guess the skinny motorcycle rider is Artemis (and that's also her next to Wade and the Iron Giant). So is Aech's avatar the big troll looking thing? The car scene alone definitely seems to depict the three main characters against the IOI army and we know who's driving the Delorean. The troll would be a nice fit for the reveal later in the movie.

I like the idea of the car scene... Probably a mid movie action scene where the top players (filled mostly with those cheating a-holes) race for the next key in the hunt. It's probably the pivotal scene that forces Wade to invade IOI headquarters. I just hope there are also more subtle sequences playing Joust or Pac Man... Or even better, Ferris Bueller! Please make Ferris Bueller happen!


Edit: Just read that people analysing the trailer did see "Aech" written on the chest of the troll thing.

I have a general question... How do they get the rights to show all of the old pop culture references? Do they have to pay/or agree to terms, or are some references vague enough that they don't have to worry about it?

Spielberg has the rights to the Delorean. It's a matter of paying.

The 101 enforcers getting into their cars didn't land for me. I just make me think there would be too big if a disconnect between to real world and Oasis. It is a big reason why I can't stand driving games.

The one thing I did like about assassin's Creed was the "VR" rig he was in. It would at least let you experience the g forces and crap that would lend to the experience

Meh. Its been a while since I read the book. And changing the name of the company to a binary name doesn't seem like too much of a stretch.

My GF hasn't read the book and had a similar reaction seeing the trailer.

I've read the book five or six times and loved this teaser. I'm pretty confident the full trailer will be a much different tone and show more of what the story is about for those not familiar with the source material.

I think Spielberg will be able to thread the needle when it comes to making it nostalgia porn and telling a good story.

I'm wondering if all the Avatars are made to look somewhat fake/CG in the Oasis. The visuals from the car race seem to indicate a more realistic look, but all the brief clips of the avatars (Aech's troll, the shot of Wade at Oz's Dance Party, shot of Wade & Artemis next to Iron Giant) appear to have a sorta cartoony look. Could be on purpose instead of going for the realistic look of people that never quite looks right.

It is a simulated world after all and nobody would fault the movie if they went for style instead of super realism for the Oasis scenes.
