That is amazing that not as many hits are actually happening. BUT, you have have been exposed in the industry itself which I know you were hoping for. It will take time but people will start to notice the industry insiders referencing you.

In the past 24 hours I've had a Hunger Games fansite account with 31K followers tweet a mention/link to the trailer page, a Rachel McAdams fansite account with 28K followers tweet a mention/link to the TV page (in reference to True Detective), and now Duncan Jones with 184K followers retweet a link/mention to the theatrical page. The exposure is AMAZING, but it's still crazy how relatively few hits those kind of tweets actually bring in.
That's a start.
Keep up the good work and I'll make sure to add to your daily click amounts.

I wouldn't feel too bad about not getting too many clicks from those fan accounts, TC. Aren't most of those followers spam anyway?

Yeah, two weeks in, the site has already solidified itself as a go-to resource. It's definitely caught on with all the most popular writers and blog sites, and I know for a fact quite a few industry types have been using it. It's absolutely making the rounds, so I'm not worried about exposure at all. It's just crazy how little traffic actually comes from social media. I never would have guessed as much. And yeah, Taj, most of those followers are probably spam anyway.

Btw, I think I've already started another trailer craze, this time with the next Hunger Games trailer. I kept getting emails asking when the first trailer for Mockingjay Part 2 might drop, so I finally took a guess yesterday, and my Twitter mentions have been absolutely blowing up since. Same exact cycle as with the the BvS trailer guess. Crazy.

Yes, and why weren't we consulted? I don't want to pull my seed money, but will!

Ha!

I was actually already PLANNING on posting here, since this "deal" is far from done, and I desperately need some guidance. I was just waiting to see what this guy had to say first, and I literally JUST got home from the meeting...

- Basically, the number one feature people keep asking me to implement is a way to show exactly which platforms each VOD and Retail movie is available on. Not every movie is on iTunes, others are only on Amazon, etc. That said, to track that info myself, for that many movies, would be next to impossible.

- Last week I randomly get an email from the CEO of GoWatchIt.com, praising TPL, saying he'd potentially like to work together. I'd never heard of the site, but check it out, and lo and behold, their bread and butter is the EXACT feature people want to see on TPL. Not to mention, the site is as clean and straightforward as can be, which I love. So we schedule a meeting for 11 AM today.

- SIDE NOTE: We met for an hour at a breakfast spot a few blocks from my place. I walk in, and the first person I see is CHRISTIAN BALE just chilling on the take-out bench, waiting for his order. Maybe three other people in the entire place. Long hair, giant beard, workout shorts and tennis shoes. Looks like a bum, but a super cool way to start the meeting when the CEO guy walks in and introduces himself to me. Bale's out the door two minutes later, though.

- ANYWAY, the basic gist is that GoWatchIt wants to have a link/icon next to each listing at TPL. Right by the Play Trailer icon (I was already planning on combining the IMDB and RT links into one mouseover/drop down tab for each listing, so this is no problem). For VOD and Retail movies, the user could then click the GoWatchIt link, and be taken to that movie's GoWatchIt page, where all available VOD platforms would be listed. For theatrical movies, the user could click the GoWatchIt icon for each listing at TPL, and would thenbe automatically subscribed to GoWatchIt's "queue," which alerts the user via email when that movie hits theaters, the trailer is released, etc.

- GoWatchIt also wants to use my listings data. They wouldn't have any kind of a release schedule on their site, and wouldn't be stepping on my toes in that way. Instead, they would just want to pull each movie's info for use on each movie's individual page (the release date, studio, runtime, etc. just so everything is in sync between the two sites).

- In return, The Projection List would be implemented into their site as well, with links to TPL on each movie's page, and when the user pushes play on a trailer, it would bring up that specific movie's TPL trailer page (instead of playing in-window at GoWatchIt). GoWatchIt currently has deals with all the major indie studios and film festivals, along with the MPAA (the people who decide the ratings for movies). They're currently working on the major studios now. Regardless, I would have access to all GoWatchIt's "connections" basically, and would potentially even get placement at the MPAA's site.

- No compensation was discussed. It was never said that I wouldn't be compensated, but the idea of basically paying for real estate on my site never came up. It was more of a technical, pre-liminary, would-you-even-be-interested kind of discussion. Though, if a user clicked from TPL to movie's GoWatchIt page, and then purchased a movie through either Fandango, iTunes, Amazon, etc., the CEO guy said I would get a 50/50 split of whatever percentage GoWatchIt gets from that sale. Which, frankly, would be next to nothing, unless I had millions of users.

ALL THAT SAID, my question is basically this... does this deal sound fair? The reality of the situation is that I'm a two-week-old startup with roughly only 1000 unique visitors a day, who desperately needs A) this service, and B) the hits/exposure it would provide. So on one hand, I'm not really in a position to demand compensation. But on the other hand, I'd be putting GoWatchIt links (albeit clean and unobtrusive ones) with every single listing at TPL, and part of me feels like they might be getting the better end of the deal, especially considering they'd be using all my data as well. I'm likely going forward with this either way, because no matter how you slice it, it's solid, legit step forward for the site, I'm just wondering if I'd be out of line seeking compensation in return. Especially considering the access/legitimacy I'll already be getting by partnering with them.

Anyway, sorry for the insanely long post, but these are completely uncharted waters for me, and I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give. Thanks!

That is really hard to say without a better idea of what they have in mind. I don't think it would hurt at all to discuss that in later discussions, but maybe don't make it a make it or break deal. Because you are right in that it is a pretty good way to get some bigger distribution.

Granted I have never heard of this site either, so I can't say to how big they actually are and how much notoriety you will get from it.

Yeah, it's a tough call. I'd never be a d*ck about money and say the deal's off if I don't get anything. I guess I just want to know if I'd be stupid for doing this for free basically, in return for getting plugged into their network.

As for exposure/legitimacy, the guy showed me where all these notable movies are tweeting the link to their movie's GoWatchIt page. Basically, studios haven't yet figured out how to market their VOD stuff because there are so many damn platforms to choose from. If they say "Available on iTunes Today" they're missing out on the viewer who only watches via Amazon. So, instead, what studios like about GoWatchIt is that they can essentially just say "Check GoWatchIt for all available platforms." And the guy was pretty convincing with all the examples he used. Studios are starting to put GoWatchIt links on their movies; Facebook pages, their official sites, etc. It's just now kind of starting to catch on. So who knows, it might be a no-brainer to get in with these guys this early.

Whatever you decide to do, I think talking with a lawyer would not hurt.

^ Agreed. When/if it comes to signing something, I'll no doubt have that looked over, and will discuss at length.

If that is the case with studios starting to link GoWatchit on all of their ads, that is a good sign you are at least tying yourself to a good horse. Still not sure on the money stuff, and definitely agree on the lawyer. Do you happen to have any connections at a studio that has tweeted out their links? Might be a good idea to find out what their business has been like with them and what the financial deals have looked like (if they are even remotely privy to that information)

Couldn't not share this. Text I got tonight from my friend who works at Bruckheimer. In reference to a meeting they had today at Paramount to figure out when to release their next couple of movies. "Jerry" is obviously Bruckheimer, "Chad" is Chad Oman, head producer at Bruckheimer, "Melissa" is their VP, Adam Goodman is the president of Paramount Film Group, and Marc Evans is Paramount's head of production...

Agreed.

I don't have any connections to the studios who have tweeted out the links. Wish I did, but so far it's like IFC Films, Weinstein, etc. More independent. I can try to look into it, though. That's a good idea. I can definitely find someone who knows someone.

My first reaction is that it sounds like he is getting a lot more out of it than you. Now this might be bc I know your site and have never heard of GoWatchIt, but you are giving up a lot of real estate.

The main question I would ask is if this helps get you closer to what you want to achieve with the site? If it does, dig into it deep. If not, see if there is a different way to work out the arrangement or moveon.org.

Yeah, it definitely feels like he's getting more out of this than me, but that said, it absolutely helps me achieve what I want to with the site. Showing all the various platforms is something that's absolutely essential for the growth of the site. I feel like I have to do this, but I'm going to be as cautious as possible in doing so.

Hmmm tough call. It does sound a little bit like your site would end up being the "front porch" to get in the go-watch it portion of his site. If you do it I'd probably insist on tracking who is linking to who in what amounts.

Would his contacts in the studios/MPAA be helpful for the site moving forward in some practical way?

I'll try and drop in on his site this week and see how it handles.

The front porch idea would actually be huge. If people are using my site to get to GoWatchIt, I'm all in. That was one of the main reasons I built the site - to be a filter to IMDb, RT, trailer-watching, etc. If TPL is the first place everyone goes, I don't care where they go from there. I'm still getting hits.

And yes, his studio contacts would be super-helpful in that I need them sending me press releases, news, etc. Right now I have to react to everyone else getting release announcements before me. I have a few of the smaller studio publicists emailing me, but I really need the big ones.
